James Morris achieved grades in nine GCSE subjects at the local school including Maths and Science. In year 10, James was lucky enough to be selected for a four-week work experience programme with Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, working on the Metrobus scheme in Bristol. During this work placement the excitement for construction and civil engineering was ignited. Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd offered James an Apprenticeship, working in collaboration with Weston College, James is studying Level 3 Civil Engineering and the placement combines one day a week at College whilst otherwise working on the Apprenticeship scheme with his employer at Bristol Airport.

Currently the Apprenticeship involves working on the Car Rental Consolidators Centre, a £6 million development, creating a dedicated car rental area on site at Bristol Airport. Whilst gaining practical experience in a variety of roles within the construction industry, it also includes attending one day a week at Weston College completing assignments on health and safety, construction framework and building construction principles and methods.

James Morris, Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, Apprentice, aged 17 said:

“I really enjoy the work that I am involved with at Bristol Airport. There are so many advantages to an Apprenticeship, I gain practical experience of the construction industry on a daily basis whilst developing my learning skills at the College. My favourite part of the job is setting out kerbs, using a total station, mapping out kerb locations using GPS and CAD design, inputting data into a handset and plotting the exact location and specific requirement of the kerb in relation to the road. I also enjoy the visits to other key construction projects around the region which really enhances my own personal experience and share best practice of the industry. “

Dr Simon Dunn, Operations Director – South West, Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd said:

“Having met James during his Summer Placement with Griffiths it was clear he had a passion for Civil Engineering. He thoroughly deserved a place on our Apprenticeship Programme and since joining he has impressed all his colleagues with his hard work and how quickly he picks things up. It is projects such as the development at Bristol Airport that are vital to offering young people like James the opportunity to develop a career. With the ongoing work at Bristol Airport we shall be looking to appoint another Apprentice Engineer this coming academic year and I would encourage anyone interested to contact [email protected] their CV.”

Dave Crew, Head of Employer Partnership at Weston College said:

“Weston College is committed to working with our network of employers, providing employment and training opportunities for our talented students as they begin their career through Apprenticeship Schemes. We are proud to be providing apprenticeship opportunities with employers including Alun Griffiths and it’s fantastic to see our learners having the opportunity to work on key local infrastructure projects, including the development of Bristol Airport.”

In 2019 Bristol Airport is investing over £60 million in customer enhancements and development projects to include car parks, terminal, catering, car rental and airline facilities. Plans are already well progressed for further growth in 2019 and beyond, building on a successful 2018 which saw 8.6 million passengers use the Airport. The success of the airport is clearly linked to the strong economy in the South West region supporting business, inbound tourism and leisure markets.

Work continues to reduce carbon emissions across the airport site in order to achieve its objective to be carbon neutral by 2030 by measuring its energy use across the site and seeking to limit emissions. A range of actions are taking place to reduce the carbon intensity of the airport infrastructure by measuring its success by reducing per passenger carbon emissions.

Forecast to serve more than nine million passengers 2019, Bristol is the ninth busiest airport in the UK, and England’s third largest regional airport operating to 126 direct routes globally.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
