Latvian airline airBaltic will launch scheduled flights between Manchester and Riga, Latvia on March 29, 2020. The new route will offer convenient connections to passengers travelling from Manchester to the Latvian capital and over 70 destinations served from Riga to Scandinavia, Russia, the Middle East and Europe.

Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer of airBaltic: “Riga is a dynamic city and a key business centre of the Baltic states and has a lot to offer to both business and leisure travellers. It is also a very convenient transfer point with excellent connections within our wide route network. Our passengers will be able to travel to both cities for very attractive prices in the economy or our full-service business class on the new and comfortable Airbus A220-300 aircraft.”

Stephen Turner, Commercial Director at Manchester Airport, said: “It’s great to see airBaltic come to Manchester Airport with flights to Riga. It is already a very popular destination, so it is great to see the Latvian flag carrier come onto the route too, giving additional choice and flexibility for the 22 million people in our vast catchment area.

“The airBaltic route will not only enable to enjoy the delights Riga has to offer but also massively open up Eastern Europe and Russia to our passengers, which will benefit business and leisure travellers alike. We look forward to the route starting next year and seeing the airline grow from the UK’s global gateway in the North.”

Direct flights between Manchester and Riga will take place four times weekly and will be operated on the brand new Airbus A220-300 aircraft, one of the greenest and quietest commercial aircraft in its class offering an excellent flying experience with such benefits for passengers as wider seats, larger windows, more hand luggage space in the cabin, improved lavatories and much more.

airBaltic serves flights also to two other cities in the United Kingdom – the year-round flights from London to Riga and Tallinn (Estonia) and summer season flights from Aberdeen to Riga. The traffic on airBaltic UK routes grows each year. Thus, in 2019, airBaltic plans to have carried by 17% more passengers on these routes than last year. Almost one-fifth of all passengers travelling to and from the UK with airBaltic has chosen Riga as a transfer airport. Most popular connections are among others two other Baltic capitals Tallinn and Vilnius, Nordic cities Helsinki and Turku, also Moscow and St.Petersburg, Tbilisi, and Odessa.

In summer 2020, airBaltic plans to introduce four more new destinations: from Riga to Trondheim, Bergen and Yerevan, and from Tallinn to Nice. A complete schedule of airBaltic flights and tickets for the new destination are available on the company's website at www.airbaltic.com.

I believe that Latvia had a one month long full covid lockdown quite recently. Not sure what the present situation is over there - each country seems to change rules by the day. But Latvia is unlikely to become a reliable choice for leisure travel bookings again until covid is well behind us. Having had previous Air Baltic flights cancelled, I was very surprised when the airline decided to go ahead with the delayed MAN-RIX route launch whilst international travel opportunities remained so suppressed. I hope they don't judge MAN's long-term potential based on numbers from the 'Summer of Covid'. Riga looks a great city to visit in "normal" times. I'll rebook once coronapanic recedes and cowardly politicians stop squealing and doing even more stupid things than usual (not country specific).

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
