Who is old enough to remember the ITV programme "wish you were here" hosted by Judith Chalmers?

Here's my "wish you were here?" Cropped from the Jet2 thread but it's to give you an idea on what the thread about.

I've done a fair amount of reading about Cape Verde recently and its one of the most open thinking African countries with a big European influence. A largely Christian population means it will be easy for European tourists to adapt to the local culture.

It's probably the closest we can get to a Caribbean holiday without actually going to the Caribbean. All in all it looks an amazing place to go with pure white beaches, palms and golden sunsets. The temperature is at or around 28'c for much of the year.

It's a place most definitely on my #BucketList

Ever since I was a kid watching James Bond "Moonraker" I've wanted to visit Rio De Jeneiero. Perhaps maybe I'd be disappointed seeing it for real but there's always been some sort of pull for me to visit Rio. It's supposed to be quite a dangerous city but the carnivals look amazing. I've always wanted to take the cable car up the mountain where supposedly you can watch aircraft landing at the cities airport.

My late mother always wanted to visit the Seychelles but never actually got there.

It's not top of my list but I feel that one day I should make the effort to fulfill her dreams.

Looking at this image I think I could just about get through it :)

Your mother had good choice. I too could see myself sat on that empty beach. It looks amazing. 👌

Never had a huge desire to visit #NewYork but so many people do with huge numbers of visitors each year especially over Christmas. Is this somewhere where you #WishYouWereHere

If I'm honest, I don't really have anywhere in the US on my bucket list. The continuous coverage of guns in the country really puts me off. What are your thoughts?

Yes I`m with you Aviador..The USA has never been on my bucket list either..Many years ago, a now sadly deceased friend, born in Omaha,Nebraska said the only parts of America worth visiting was Southern California and the NE states of Vermont etc...The rest, he said, were best avoided....especially Florida

Naturally I feel I am being harsh because as the saying goes don't judge a book by it's cover but the guns problem they have there really turns me off. Where is your #WishYouWereHere ?

Hi aviador I always wanted to visit atlanta Airport after conversation with my other mates who had been there. Telling me how busy the place was and last November was able to go there what a place and locals were very welcoming

These days, at my time of life, I can`t be arsed to sit in a tin tube for 14 hours to see the sun/sand/beaches, even new sites, sounds and people..I`m determined though to visit Budapest and Malta, before shuffling off this mortal coil..and for everything else I require in life, there`s Fuerteventura and France...

You're a young 70 year old lad. You should be making the most of it and visiting as many places as you can :)

It's good to know Atlanta Airport is worth visiting. I believe @Bigman has done just that but it's such a long way to go just to go to the airport.

I've visited the US on 3 occasions (I've also transited LAX twice, but that doesn't count).
The first, as a 10 year old. We landed at JFK and had to get a taxi (or should I say cab), to Grand Central Station, as we were staying with relatives near Philadelphia. It was dark for the cab ride, but the buildings were so well lit that I did get to see a lot, including the Empire State Building (the twin Towers didn't exist then).
The second was a trip to Arizona, with my then French girlfriend. A colleague was working a sabbatical at Arizona state university, so we went to stay with her and her boyfriend and we all took a trip, visiting the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley the Painted Desert, the Hoover Dam, Sedona etc. It was incredible. Some of the most amazing scenery I've ever seen. The strange thing was that on the flight out, we ended up sitting next to an American woman. She got chatting to us and it turned out she was a travel Agent. When she learned the places we were planning to visit her reply was 'what on Earth do you want to go there for?'.
The third time was a business trip to San Diego. The company that I worked for was bought by a US company, who wanted to outsource the work my department did to another US company. So, I was asked to go out there to train one of their Chemist (I was basically training someone to take my job). I was there for 2 weeks and so busy that I was working 12 hour days and then I had to file a daily report to the bosses when I got back to the hotel. I did manage to get the Sunday off and went to Balboa Park and visited the San Diego Air and Space Museum.
In those visits, I never worried about guns, but I think I'd have a different opinion now.

I first started travelling as a 10yr old out to live in Cape Town, went on a new SAA Boeing 707, calling at places like Brazzaville in the Congo..Been round a lot and seen a lot in the subsequent 60 years..Travel isnt all its cracked up to be..and in any case I`ve got 5 gorgeous grandkids that more travel would take me away from. But thanks for the compliment though

We’re going next month!

I hope you have a lovely time and your experience is one you expect and cherish.

I've been and I absolutely loved it! Do bear in mind, that it's a long flight (24 hours each way), so you'll need at least two weeks, better three. Just don't go via Los Angeles. I did that the first time I went, with Air New Zealand and it was a nightmare (L.A. airpoet, not Air New Zealand). I've been to AUS and NZ several times since, going 'the other way', with Emirates from BHX and Singapore and Malaysian from LHR and found it much better. My Sister used to live in Victor Harbor, a small town about an hour or so's drive east of Adelaide. It's wonderful! There is a horse drawn 2 deck carriage, which takes you about 3/4 mile along a pathway'pier out to Granite Island (you can also walk there). The first time I walked across, I looked into the crystal clear sea and was horrified to see what I thought was a black bin liner in the water. It turned out to be a Stingray! You can also go on a night tour of the Island (with a guide), to see the Little (also known as 'fairy') penguins that roost on the island. Just up the road from my Sisters house, was a field full of Kangaroos lazing about. There must have been a hundred of them. We also visited Kangaroo Island (I think its Australia's third largest Island) and about an hours ferry ride from Adelaide), where we saw Wedge Tailed Eagles.

The long flight is perhaps something that is somewhat off-putting. The longest flight I have ever been on is 4 and a half hours so it's difficult to comprehend a flight longer than that.

I can certainly remember the ITV program also the BBC version ' Holiday ' . Never been to Cape Verde, but have thought about it a number of times. I think it can be quite windy and popular with windsurfing.

I've not been to the US for a long time now, my favourite destination was San Francisco and California in general . The trip was memorable because I flew in my first 747, owned by TWA, the airline upgraded me coming home., so.i remember that trip fondly.

Much over 2 1/2 hours in economy is enough for me. 24 hours (even with a stop), is horrendous. But then, I'm 6'3" and suffer lower back problems, so spending that amount of time with each knee to the side of the seatback in front of me is not pleasant. Business class is different story. Lie flat beds and a good lounge both at departure and intermediate stop makes a huge difference (you can't beat two or three cold beers in the lounge if you've got a 2 to 3 hour stopover. And a shower is wonderful). I'm not keen on the idea of these 16+hour non-stop flights. I'd much rather have a stop, where I can get up and stretch my legs. The other problem, is jet-lag. As long as you're moving, you're generally OK, but stop and it will hit you like a freight train. The first time I went to New Zealand, we landed mid morning. My Sister and Brother-in Law met us and took us to a restaurant run by a Scottish gentleman. We enquired about lunch and he said that they only did snacks at midday, but he would get his Chef to make something. We had the most wonderful Lamb Sunday roast. While we were eating and chatting, I was fine. On getting back to my Sister's house and sitting down, I was gone. I just couldn't fight the tiredness.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
