Why a New Airport for Doncaster Won't Succeed

The idea of establishing a new airport in Doncaster, UK, has been a topic of debate for years. While the prospect of a new airport might seem promising, several factors suggest that such a venture is unlikely to succeed. Here are some key reasons why a new airport for Doncaster may face significant challenges:

Financial Viability

One of the primary concerns is the financial viability of a new airport. The closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) in 2022 was largely due to its inability to achieve the critical mass required to become profitable. The airport struggled with low passenger numbers and high operational costs, which ultimately led to its closure. Reopening or establishing a new airport in the same region would likely face similar financial challenges, especially in a post-pandemic world where the aviation industry is still recovering.

Competition from Nearby Airports

Doncaster is located in close proximity to several major airports, including Manchester, Leeds Bradford, and East Midlands airports. These established airports already offer a wide range of domestic and international flights, making it difficult for a new airport in Doncaster to attract airlines and passengers. The competition from these well-established airports would pose a significant hurdle for a new airport to gain a foothold in the market.

Infrastructure and Investment

While the existing airfield in Doncaster already has a terminal, establishing a new airport would still require substantial investment in other infrastructure components, such as adding necessary facilities to support airport operations. This includes the installation of Instrument Landing System (ILS) facilities for the runway. Remote ATC facilities could be considered. Onsite full ATC cover would be substantially more. Previously, ATC was covered by the facility in Liverpool, but bringing it in-house would incur additional costs. The runway itself may need some maintenance to bring it back to operational standards. Additionally, there are ongoing operational costs associated with remote ATC, including staffing, maintenance of equipment, and software updates. The financial burden of such an investment is considerable, and securing funding for a new airport project in Doncaster may prove challenging. Additionally, the existing infrastructure in the region may not be sufficient to support a new airport, leading to further costs and logistical issues.

Lack of Demand

The demand for air travel in the Doncaster region may not be sufficient to justify the establishment of a new airport. The closure of DSA highlighted the challenges of attracting enough passengers to sustain operations. With the ongoing recovery of the aviation industry and changing travel patterns, it is uncertain whether there would be enough demand to support a new airport in Doncaster.

Summary

In summary, while the idea of a new airport for Doncaster may seem appealing, the financial, competitive, infrastructural, demand, and political challenges make it unlikely to succeed. The focus should perhaps be on improving and optimising existing transport infrastructure to better serve the region's needs.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
