[textarea]Aberdeen Airport runway extension to be built

The long-awaited extension to Aberdeen Airport's main runway has been given the go-ahead, the Scotsman reports. BAA announced that work will begin in spring, in a major boost for travellers and businesses in the region.

The green light comes almost four years after the planning application to extend the runway by 124 metres, increasing the range of direct international destinations, was approved by Aberdeen City Council. It is a major part of an ambitious £60m development scheme to transform Aberdeen Airport into a global gateway for the north-east of Scotland.

The extension will allow airlines to fly non-stop to destinations across the Mediterranean, North Africa and North America, and allow the airport to accommodate a new generation of cleaner, quieter aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 and the Boeing 747 jumbo jet.

Derek Provan, the airport's managing director, said: ‘I am delighted to be in a position to confirm this great news. It is impossible to understate the impact that this could have on the whole of the north-east. It opens up new destinations at the same time as allowing our existing carriers to work more efficiently. At a time when aviation has struggled under the weight of a difficult year, this is an incredibly welcome announcement that will provide a much-needed boost.’

[textarea]Aberdeen Airport to get £45m upgrades

Aberdeen Airport is to get £4.25m of improvements this year, as part of a planned £45m series of upgrades scheduled through to 2021. A £10m extension of the main runway was completed in October as part of £50m of investment in the previous decade.

The new plans include a £5m expansion of the airport's international arrivals area. and a further £3m boosting capacity within the terminal and expanding the security search area. Airport managing director Derek Provan said: ‘Our aim is to continue to provide high standards of service.’

[textarea]£100m plans to redevelop Aberdeen Airport

Plans for a £100m redevelopment of Aberdeen Airport over the next 30 years have been unveiled. The airport's draft master plan includes a major refurbishment of the terminal and space for further runway expansion.

The blueprint, which will now go out for consultation, also sets a target of raising passenger numbers by 40% to four million a year by 2040. Aberdeen was the UK's fastest growing major airport last year, with forecasts produced by BAA predicting a growing demand in the long-term for air services to and from the city. It estimates the development could create about 1100 jobs.

The draft master plan sets out how Aberdeen Airport will develop to meet that future demand, and compete more effectively against UK and European rivals. Local residents, businesses and politicians will have a chance to share their views on the future development of the airport during a 12-week public consultation.

That's good news for the airport although £100m isn't a great deal of money considering it is to be spent over a 30 year period which is a long time. The forecast passenger numbers of 4 million seems realistic for the airports catchment area so it should be achievable in that time scale.
