Aberdeen Airport reports first growth in almost 3 years

Aberdeen Airport saw an end to nearly three years of falling passenger numbers in January. Almost 200,000 people passed through the terminal in January, a 9.1% increase on the same period last year. It is the first time the airport’s passenger figures have increased since April 2008, although heavy snowfall in January 2010 did make the figures from a year ago lower than expected.

The airport’s managing director, Derek Provan, said: ‘These figures must be analysed in the context of the severe weather experienced in January of last year, which was more badly affected by winter weather than January 2011. However, we are seeing a gradual growth in confidence from some airlines and continue to work with our airline partners to deliver growth at Aberdeen Airport this year.’

Edinburgh and Glasgow also saw increased passengers, with rises of 13.6% and 8% respectively.

CAA Passenger Stats for May 2011

A total of 256,447 passengers passed through Aberdeen Airport during May up 11.9% compared with May last year. Rolling year passenger numbers stand at 2,898,205 up 1.8% on the previous 12 months.

Record week for Aberdeen Airport

A record number of people passed through the terminals at Aberdeen Airport during Offshore Europe week. More than 67,000 passengers from across the globe used the airport, over 2000 more than the 2009 total. The airport also recorded its biggest ever day of departures on Thursday, September 8, with 6623 passengers.

The airport’s operations director, Carol Benzie, said: ‘The week went incredibly well, with months of planning going into the operation. The team pulled out all the stops to deliver a first class result and it showed.'

‘It was a great team effort from people across the airport to ensure we had no operational issues, no delays due to the number of passengers, great feedback and an increase in retail spend at the airport.’

November 2011

After nearly three years of continually falling passenger numbers Aberdeen has had a remarkable 2011 to date.

CAA stats show that In November it handled 260,683 passengers, up 15.8% on November 2010, though it was helped considerably by a 19.4% increase in atms.

Rolling 12-month total was 3,045,520, up 9.5% on a year ago.

Every month in 2011 has seen large percentage increases, either in double digits or nearly so for most months.

December 2011

CAA stats show that 233,069 passengers used the airport in December, up a startling 19% on December 2010.

The reason was twofold: a snow affected December 2010 and 14.3% more atms in December 2011.

Rolling 12-month figure (ie the calendar year) was 3,082,626, up 11.5% on a year ago.

Aberdeen Airport reports surge in passenger traffic

Aberdeen Airport has reported its busiest October for five years, following a surge in international traffic during the school holidays.

The airport, which is owned by Heathrow Airport Holdings (HAH), said passenger numbers increased year-on-year by 11.3% to more than 316,000.

It was the second highest passenger total ever recorded by the airport for the month of October.

International traffic rose by 16.2%, while domestic numbers were up 10.2%.

The number of helicopter passengers rose by 6.6%.

Aberdeen airport said a busier than expected October school break helped drive numbers.

Haven't looked at ABZ for a number of years. My last post showed the December 2011 figures (see above) when the airport was beginning to boom.

It reached over 3,725,000 by the end of 2014 but this year has been downhill all the way. The savage cutbacks in the oil industry have affected Aberdeen and its airport to a worrying degree.

CAA stats for September show that annual throughput had dropped to 3,566,363. This is only 2.6% down on a year ago but recent months have seen exaggerated drops. September was 18% down at 279,077 with atms for the month down a massive 44%. There are suggestions that October will be down around 15%.

Until the oil industry stabilises it's difficult to see how ABZ can stem the passenger number decreases.

March 2016

Passengers this month = 236,318 (-16.1)
Rolling year = 3,341,188 (-10.2)
Aircraft movements this month = 6,821 (-18.8)
Rolling year = 90,735 (-14.3)

Pretty grim statistics overall, provoking a lot of displeasure on other forums. Only a few routes out of ABZ haven't experienced drops in passenger numbers.

It just goes to show how local economic conditions can impact flights from regional airports. Aberdeen is effectively in a micro #recession.

So far as the figures go and purely from a selfish perspective it does at least allow my local airport to climb the airport league table a little bit more.

CAA stats September 2017
280,601 passengers used the airport up 3.9% on 2016. The rolling year was 3,047,258 up 0.8% on 2016.
Atms were 7284 up 3.9%.

It looks as if they have got to the "bottom of the trough" and will start increasing again, but at a slow rate.

CAA Stats 2022
Aberdeen saw 1,960,307 passengers use the airport in 2022 up 82% on 2021 (1,075,639)
Aircraft movements were 74,098.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
