When booking a hotel through Agoda, Booking.com or directly with a hotel, you may sometimes notice that your card is verified even when the room hasn't actually been charged yet.

This confused me the first few times I booked hotels overseas. I assumed that if a hotel checked my card, it meant they were trying to take the payment. But that's not always the case.

For some reservations, especially pay-at-property bookings, the card is mainly used to guarantee the reservation.

The hotel needs to know that the card details are valid and that they have a valid payment method on file in case of a late cancellation or no-show.

Sometimes you may also see a small temporary charge or authorization on the card. This doesn't necessarily mean you've been charged for the room. It can simply be a pre-authorization used to check whether the card is valid.

From my experience, card verification problems are more common when:

  • The guest name and cardholder name are different
  • The billing information doesn't match
  • International transactions are disabled
  • The card doesn't support hotel or travel transactions
  • The bank blocks the authorization
  • Additional 3D Secure verification is required
One thing I've learned is not to keep trying the same payment over and over again when it fails.

If the card has enough balance but the booking still fails, check the card settings, billing address, international payment support and any verification messages from your bank first.

Also keep in mind that Agoda, Booking.com and hotels don't always handle payments in exactly the same way. Sometimes the booking platform processes the payment, while in other cases the hotel handles the card directly.

So seeing a card verification or temporary authorization during a hotel booking isn't necessarily a problem. In many cases, it's simply part of how hotels confirm and guarantee reservations.

Hopefully this helps anyone who sees an unexpected card verification while booking a hotel overseas.

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
