Bristol - 1860 Down 33% (what price this gets pulled so they can do NQY-LCY?)

This was one of the reasons why I had reservations about a LBA-CWL route in a recent thread.

Unless there is a bigger business association between the Leeds area and South Wales than I'm aware of, then LBA-BRS falling in numbers would indicate to me that CWL-LBA would not work any better given Bristol is a larger business area in general than Cardiff.

The NQY-LCY route can reportedly be operated without detriment to existing routes in terms of WOW's current number of airframes.

Having said that, we don't know the LBA-PLY or LBA-NQY figures yet. They seem to be taking a bigger share of the passengers numbers in recent months.

Leeds has a very good hourly rail service to Bristol these days. It was twice hourly a few years ago. Maybe this is impacting.

Your remark led me to try to research the LBA to BRS/NQY/PLH route pax numbers on the CAA website.

The full 2008 figures have now been published showing:

LBA-BRS 31,511, down 15% on 2007

LBA-NQY 4,838, down 84% on 2007

LBA-PLH 1,609, down 44% on 2007

The NQY and PLH figures make little sense.

I then looked at BRS-NQY which showed 18,813, up 27% on 2007, and BRS-PLH which showed 9,566, up 44% on 2007.

I next looked at the provisional figures for January 2009 which are shown as:

LBA-BRS 2,273, down 19% on Jan 2008

LBA-NQY, 1,908, up 62% on Jan 2008

LBA-PLH no figure shown

However BRS-NQY showed 1,278, down 9% on Jan 2008 and BRS-PLH showed 852, up 43% on Jan 2008.

It seems that because many passengers change aircraft at Bristol when travelling from MAN and LBA to NQY and PLH (and in reverse) the CAA counts those that change aircraft as passengers between BRS and NQY or PLH for the onward part of their journeys.

My head hurts. :shok:

Mine too.

LS16 - yes, I apologise for being a bit too 'knee jerk' as you put it. I would be interested in any other useful stats that would put a more positive slant on things. The fact that the EDI has dropped from 4 to 2 would seem to be cause for concern in it's own right. The HBOS situation looks as if it is having an impact on this particular service.

CAA stats out now for Febuary. Passenger figures down 25.2%. Movements down 7.2%. New running total 2,793,308.

A very poor March with a -24.5 reduction in passengers compared with March last year with the rolling year down -4.6%

Hi

Aviador with the figures for March please dont forget you have to take in account that Easter 2008 was early last year been in late March, Where as this year 2009 saw a late Easter been in early April.

Jet2 had dropped winter routes to Palma, Krakow for the 2008/09 season and we have also lost services to Cork with Aer Arann, Inverness with Eastern and bmi's Copenhagen route. And now we have also lost the Heathrow route as well.

Hence the major drop. Hopefully April 2009's dropped wont be as bad. Guess we will just have to wait and see!

The net effect of Heathrow will be felt in April, circa 10k drop.

LBA Annual Passenger Figures From 1986 to 2008

I've been having a look at CAA stats to establish the growth of UK airports in terms of passenger numbers over the past quarter of a century - 1986 is as far back as I can find the stats with relative ease.

I've posted a comparison of all UK airports for the years 1986 and 2008 on the Worldwide Airports and Airlines section.

As LBA is the most popular airport on this website I thought a look at the airport's annual passenger figures for each year between 1986 and 2008 might be of interest.

The figures are in millions or part thereof.

The effects of the recession of the early 1990s are clear with 1990's passenger numbers not surpassed until 1995.

The picture for the most part since then has been one of steady progress with 2003 showing a startling rise of over 30% on 2002, presumably due to the arrival of Jet2.

What is clear is that each time there has been something to effect the aviation industry, it has always shown its resilience and bounced back quickly. This is very apparent after the previous recession and 9/11.

I think that the main reason for the slump inpassengers during 1990 was the collapse of Capital A/L.

Yes of course not to forget Capital Airlines, such a shame, but the last recession hit us between 1989 and 1992 according to the Times Online. I had to double check because I couldn't quite remember although I am old enough to.

Well the figures for April are out, and overall its not too bad at all!

We were down 6.9% on last April, comapred to:

DSA -14.6%
MME -51.9%
EMA -16.9%
MAN -5.2%
NCL -7%

Usual routes suffering from falls but a fair few routes with increases,

Milan +4%
Rome +11%
Venice +14%
Faro +17%
Malaga +18%
Palma +6%
Arrecife +51%
Las Palmas +817 :wacko:
Tenerife +19%
Geneva +75%
Dalaman +1378 (TCX starting earlier)
Prage +16% (First increase in months!)
Krakow +23%
Sharm El Sheikh +1710% (Jet2 new flights)

I dare say once we get LGW operating and Jet2/Thomas Cook get into the swing of things I wouldn't mind betting that the way things are looking we will be suffering from only small drops compared to some airports, as Jet2 flights really are full (MJV on the 73 went out with 148 on last week :shok: and with 146 on most days) KRK also doing very well with around 140 on each one. Looks like a bumper summer ahead considering the credit crunch!!

I think Jet2 handled around 3750 passengers today which is excellent. On the downside the airport was buckling under the strain. Today clearly showed how much the terminal development is needed as a matter of urgency. I think the staff from all departments at the airport worked extremely well under the circumstances. Unfortunately they tend not to get the recognition they deserve from the managers!

Some airports seem to be regularly missed from the first batch of monthly CAA stats. LBA, BFS and sometimes BRS are regular 'offenders'. This month Liverpool and East Midlands are also missing from the larger regional airports.

Because the same airports often feature in the dilatory league one must assume they are late getting their figures to the CAA. I hasten to add this is an assumption, not a certainty.

They should all be there by the end of the month, if not sooner.

Most of the airports are now shown, including those that missed the first batch on Monday last.

As you point out LBA is still missing. Can only think they are slow getting the info to the CAA as they seem to be amongst the last to be published most months.

At last, the May figures are on the CAA website. Disappointingly only 241348 used the airport a drop of 13% on last year. Rolling year total is now 6% down.

Disappointing yes but the loss of the Heathrow service must have accounted for a sizable proportion of that reduction.
