Indirectly to do with passenger stats - 66 arrivals and the same number of departures today, possibly the busiest day of the year so far in terms of commercial airline movements.

Some mid-week days in January were very quiet - down to 40-odd arrivals and reciprocal departures.

The minutes of last month's airport consultative committee meeting have now been published on the BRS website and the CEO, Robert Sinclair, told members he was expecting a 2-3% growth in passenger numbers in 2012.

He also drew attention to the fact to something that's been discussed in this forum in recent months which is that seasonality is playing an increasing role in the airport's passenger throughput. He pointed out that 2011 saw the best September ever whilst November was back to November 2004 levels.

A member asked why there was a discrepancy between the airport's passenger figures and those issued by the CAA - something I mention regularly. No-one was able to give an answer but an officer undertook to find out.

January 2012 - CAA stats

January CAA figures now published and, as usual, they vary slightly from the airport's own figures.

For continuity CAA say that 318,416 passengers were handled in January, down 3.5% on January 2011. Atms were down 9.6% which suggest that loads were actually up slightly on average.

Rolling 12-month figure was 5,756,077, up just one half of a per cent on a year ago.

It maybe slightly disappointing not to see a bigger year on year percentage growth but it's still a healthy figure all considered. Slightly worrying that January figures were down 3.5% but I expect this is a seasonal thing as you have mentioned in the past with fewer people travelling during the winter months.

Given the larger percentage drop in flights in January compared with January 2011 the smaller percentage drop in passenger numbers is encouraging in a perverse sort of way.

February 2011

CAA stats show BRS handled 357,956 passengers in February, up 3.9% on February 2011.

Atms were down 0.3%

Rolling 12-month total is 5,769,447, up 1.1% on a year ago.

Even taking into account the extra day this year (worth about 3.5%) the figures are very satisfactory.

March 2011

CAA stats not yet published but the airport's own stats, which as always will vary slightly from the CAA version, show that 406,647 passengers used the airport in March 2012, up 3.77% on March 2011. Atms were down 4.73%.

BRS stats don't show a 12-month rolling total, only the figures to date for the current calendar year.

In the first three months of 2012 1,079,064 passengers used the airport, up 1.64% on the first three months of 2011. Atms were down 4.73% in Jan-March 2012 compared with Jan-March 2011.

Steady progress and so far in line with the BRS CEO's forecast for the year made at the January consultative committee meeting.

So a slight increase in passenger numbers. Seems like the industry standard across the board with similar passenger numbers at other regional airports with a few exceptions.

Yes, partly due to March 2012 having two additional days of the summer timetables of most scheduled airlines than March 2011.

I suppose although you don't really want a reduction in movements it good to see passenger numbers still rising despite the reduction.

I suppose although you don't really want a reduction in movements it good to see passenger numbers still rising despite the reduction.

There has been a trend at BRS in recent years of increased passenger numbers from fewer flights.

2006 5.71 mppa from 65,827 flights

2007 5.88 mppa from 58,755 flights

2008 6.23 mppa from 60,070 flights

2009 5.62 mppa from 53,824 flights

2010 5.72 mppa from 53,799 flights

2011 5.77 mppa from 52,674 flights

The trend continues in 2012 with, in the first three months of this year, 1.64% more passengers from 4.73% fewer flights compared with the same period in 2011.

Going back to the list above, if 2006 and 2011 are compared almost the same number of passengers were handled in these years but 2011 needed nearly 20% fewer flights.

I suppose it's a pretty efficient way of going about things - the airlines ought to be happy and so should the airport as it probably gets more from ancillary passenger revenue than from airline charges. The airport can also play the environment card.

Probably the disappointed people are the spotters and perhaps flight/cabin crews as well as ramp staff because fewer are likely to be needed.

Addendum

I thought I'd check other airports and it seems this pattern is not solely affecting BRS.

I looked at two airports at random (BHX and LBA)

In 2006 BHX handled 9.06 mppa from 108,659 flights compared with 2011 when 8.61 mppa were handled from 83,832 flights.

In 2006 LBA handled 2.79 mppa from 37,251 flights compared with 2011 when 2.91 mppa were handled from 32,893 flights.

All figures courtesy of CAA.

CAA stats April 2012

490,998 passengers handled which is up just 0.3% on April 2011 though atms were down 4.8% on the previous April - continuing the trend - which suggests loads were higher again generally.

Rolling 12-month figure was 5,783,767, down 0.1% on a year ago.

CAA Passenger Stats for May 2012

A total of 545,061 passengers used Bristol airport during May up +1.9% on May last year.

Rolling year passenger totals stand at 5,794,168 passengers -0.2% on the previous twelve months.

Above detail is Airport Code, Airport, Pax, (%) +or- NEW = Route not operating in May 2011

A snapshot at May stats, interesting to look at the routes that either easyjet or ryanair have the route to themselves and how the majority of easyjet routes seem to be growing, whereas Ryanair routes are the opposite, I don't know if this is due to a reduction in Ryanair frequencies, I am sure there is someone out there who can help on this!

May is always something of an uncertain month in which to compare charter flight numbers from a previous May because they sometimes start at different times of the month, meaning an extra rotation (even on a 1 x weekly) might appear one year but not in another.

For example, this May there were 5 Tues, 5 Weds and 5 Thurs whereas in May 2011 there were 5 Sun, 5 Mon and 5 Tues. This would affect loads comparisons from a previous year depending on which days flights operate and typically Ryanair do a lot of 2 x weekly routes from BRS so May 2012 would have seen an additional rotation on some and one fewer on others against May 2011.

Additionally Ryanair did axe the afternoon DUB on some days in May (and EI now only do 2 x daily against 3 x daily last summer)and also one of the daily Malagas. Some of the Ryanair figures (eg Bergerac) lead me to think that one or two rotations on other routes might have been reduced in May.

So far as I can tell Ryanair is operating three fewer rotations per week this summer compared with last - 108 in 2012, 111 in 2011.

I have had a feeling for a while that Ryanair may have reached its level at BRS - at least for the forseeable future. I wonder what the coming winter will bring - the last two have seen serious FR reductions compared with what went previously.

Returning to May's CAA stats, the 1.9% increase in passenger numbers was achieved with 2.4% fewer flights. This pattern has been established for a long time and is a positive in that average loads generally have to be up year on year.

Thanks, TheLocalYokel I knew you would have an idea on this!

Just another note, its good to see Egypt and Tunisia figures doing well again after last years Arab Spring!

Hello again alphagolf

I've had a quick look though the monthly load figures for some of the Ryanair flights (those where they are the only scheduled carrier which makes it easy to work out) and it seems the load factors on their Polish routes are down across the board compared with May 2011.

Whereas last May they were all enjoying load factors in the low 90s per cent this month they are in the 80s, and the lowish to mid 80s to boot.

It may be that there is now overkill to Poland.

Last summer Ryanair had Rzeszow, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan. This summer they have Katowice and Lodz as well. Only Gdansk in the north of Poland has come anywhere near last May's lfs at over 88%. It would seem perhaps that passengers have spread themselves across the other five FR Polish routes thus diluting all five. Will be interesting to see what June brings and, of course, FR is to start Warsaw Modlin later this year.

easyJet to Krakow is up 17% at over 7,200 passengers in the month though. It's supposed to be 5 x weekly (no Tues or Sat) but in June there are some Tues flights which suggests it's still doing very well. Load factors must have been around 90% or higher because I think a 319 is used on this route. There must have been at least a couple of Tuesday rotations in May too, otherwise the average loads would have been around 165 meaning every flight was full with some additional passengers being towed behind in a balloon.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
