Re: Eastern

Keep it coming!

I spoke to an Eastern Airways Pilot the other day and he said that many of the Eastern routes were picking up now.

Eastern add Sunday Cardiff – Newcastle flight

Eastern Airways is launching a new Sunday service on its route between Newcastle and Cardiff airports, offering business and leisure travellers a new weekend option. The introduction of a Sunday service also follows flybe’s decision to withdraw from the route.

The new Sunday service will start on October 31 and will assist business travellers heading to South Wales or to Newcastle for an early Monday start and also leisure travellers taking a weekend trip. Eastern Airways already offers two flights each weekday between Newcastle and Cardiff, and has been operating on the route since April 2006.

Sunday flights will depart from Newcastle at 17:35, arriving in Cardiff at 18:40. The return service leaves Cardiff at 19:05, landing in Newcastle at 20:10.

Eastern announce new Cardiff – Aberdeen flights

Flights linking Cardiff with Aberdeen will be launched by UK regional airline Eastern Airways in the New Year. From 4 January 2011, Eastern will offer daily weekday and Sunday services from Cardiff to Aberdeen via Newcastle. The flights will significantly reduce journey times compared to other air, road or rail options.

The weekday scheduled services will depart Cardiff at 07:30 and arrive in Aberdeen at 10:25, while flights leave Aberdeen at 16:05, arriving in Cardiff at 18:40. Sunday services take off from Cardiff at 19:05, arriving in Aberdeen at 21:20. From Aberdeen, flights leave at 16:20 and arrive in Cardiff at 18:40.

Roger Hage, Eastern Airways’ ground operations manager, said: ‘Aberdeen is Europe’s energy capital and our link from South Wales to North East Scotland will be of significant benefit to offshore workers. From New Year we’ll be offering the fastest transport link to Aberdeen from Cardiff, which will save business and leisure travellers valuable time and strengthen business connections.’

All passengers departing from Aberdeen Airport with Eastern Airways have access to its dedicated business lounge.

Eastern Airways stats November 2016
Newcastle 1301

So some good news for Eastern is that one of their routes, sadly not from LBA though, has seen significant growth in 2017. So much so that they are looking at a frequency increase. The route in question is a diagonal one across the UK and supports part of my post in the LBA General thread because the equivalent overland journey must be a nightmare.

A poster in the LBA Eastern Airways thread posted the above today.

It seems the route may be CWL-NCL. The passenger numbers for the route in 2016 were 13,664 against 12,412 in 2015 which is a 10.1% increase. If anyone wants to develop this particular point it would be better done in the CWL Eastern Airways thread.

I think the route already has a morning and evening rotation on weekdays together with an evening Sunday rotation.
Would there be a market for a middle of the day rotation as well?

They do seem to be doing well! I'm surprised because there prices are really high! Though there is an element of government travel maybe? What it may show is that if an airline like Eastern can grow the route at prices between 200-300 pounds for a roundtrip that there could be demand for an airline like Flybe to do a daily route at much lower prices.

It may support the S2000 or even one of the jets. The more seats on it the cheaper prices will hopefully become. I would expect there's a market there that isn't using the route because prices are so high.

The Eastern CWL-NCL service enables day trips between the two cities to be achieved. The easyJet BRS-NCL doesn't, except on Mondays.

The easyJet service has been wound down in recent years (it once went 4 x daily on weekdays) to what appears to be a bizarre timetable - it's been like it for a couple of years: Monday 2 x daily (morning and evening); Tuesday and Wednesday both single daily (evening); Thursday 2 x daily (late afternoon and evening); Friday 3 x daily (all after midday); Saturday no service; Sunday 3 x daily (all after midday). All flights are 'there and backers' - all by NCL-based aircraft except Tuesday and Wednesday.

Although loads are high - the last full month in the public domain is November 2016 when the load factor was 93.6% on the 156-seat A 319 that operates all the services - the conclusion appears to be that it's mainly now a leisure route, particularly with the 3 rotations on Fridays and Sundays to serve popular short-break locations at both ends.

I've set this out in some detail so that anyone not familiar with the easyJet programme can see what opportunities Eastern could have to take some passengers from across the river. They might already have some but with the right product could take some more because there are no morning flights at all between BRS and NCL except on Mondays.

Their departures from Cardiff are 08.25 and 19.25 both on JS 41s which are 29 seat aircraft. A 13.00 or 14.00 with Saab 2000 might be a good idea. An option for them could be for the aircraft to LBA based and do LBA-CWL-NCL-CWL-LBA. That would increase the NCL offering to 3 daily and introduce a LBA route as well.

Good idea. I had a notion that was the sort of thing the LBA poster was hinting at.

BRS-NCL reduces slightly in summer. Only 2 x daily on Sun and Fri but there is a single daily Saturday service. Still no day-trip ability except for Mondays. Foxlimyankee's idea of a larger aircraft would certainly help with day-trips and morning flights for passengers on the English side of the estuary which might be further encouraged by reducing fares a bit.

I've always found the Eastern product to be quite similar to BMI regional, the type of product that serves a particular share of the market where LFs are irrelevant to the point the aicraft could be less than half full but the yield will be more than sufficient.

I remember the Saab 200 operating the Sunday afternoon rotation up until around last year sometime if I'm correct in which sense the J41 as pointed out is used on all flights since, I don't think eastern will ever be on the cheap side so to speak but a larger aircraft could mean more flexibility on ticket prices, I rarely see a one way fare under £100 currently.

Will certainly be interesting to see what happens with regards to Easterns future route deployment and also the company's actually futuure itself.

I am hearing on another forum that Eastern Airways will takeover the CWL-VLY route from Monday. Good news for CWL and hopefully they'll add a third NCL or LBA as well as I can't see Eastern having the aircraft sit there all day.

I thought the previous contracts specified aircraft no larger than 19 seats. Eastern hasn't got any of those. This will surely mean that more taxpayers' money is being expended on this controversial service if larger aircraft with a cabin staff member are used.

From what i'm hearing on the more welsh air forum and from what i've read on the news item Ken Skates (WG transport cabinet secretary) has been in discussion with the CAA. So it may well be that the J41 is capped at 19 seats for the VLY route so APD doesn't have to be paid. I believe a cabin crew member would have to accompany the flight but i think when Highland airlines operated it they had one? I honestly don't know if it will cost more.
If they do base the aircraft in CWL rather than route it through NCL then the subsidy could give them the financial security to test the CWL market more as they are a known brand from their NCL flights. There could be potential on the weekend for leisure flights. I'm not sure what the range of the J41 is?

Interesting to say the least, Like you LY I'm curious as to how this will work with regards also with costs, the J41 will have higher Operating costs than the L410 so I imagine the subsidy cost will end up rising when you add in the fact a CC member should also be needed, I'd hazard a guess this is where the 3rd NCL rotation might come in also where the aircraft is idle in the day, I'm sure more details will filter through over the course of the next week or so

Worth noting that the flights are now appearing on the AmadeusView attachment 4599

That is quite expensive! Pretty sure that CityWing prices were a lot cheaper than that.

Doesn't the WG control the pricing though?
