Should still be some decent easyJet growth with a 6.7% increase in available easyJet seats for the full year of 2017. I don't know if the first two months of winter 2017/2018 is factored into this.

With the galloping start to this year (thanks to the substantial increase of flights across the board this winter compared with last), the increased easyJet offering as well as some increases from other operators (plus the new BACF routes) 8 million should be easily achieved by the end of the year (as Conns757 confidently predicted a couple of months or so ago), unless there is some major unanticipated event that severely curtails air travel.

Given that we are definitely gaining one more easyJet aircraft but losing a Ryanair one would mean no extra based aircraft this summer am I correct. So I wonder why 3 new stands are being built ?

Will there be one less Ryanair aircraft this summer? The number of flights this coming summer seems to be the same as summer 2016, up a tiny fraction in fact. I haven't worked out the overall programme timings for Ryanair so don't know how many based aircraft will be required this summer. If there is a need for four instead of five aircraft this summer it will at least spread the load given that more flights will be operated by non-based aircraft.

Some of easyJet's new routes in the past couple of years have involved destinations already operated by charter operators: Kefalonia, Pula, Dubrovnik, Turin, Las Palmas (also operated by Ryanair). That might be a pattern that will continue in future years.

Comparing the second week in August to the same of last year sees Ryanair operate 2x flights less per week (130 S17 vs 132 in S16).
91 flights of the 132 per week (69%) in S16 were operated by BRS based aircraft in comparison to 73 of 130 per week (56%) this summer.

Many thanks for the confirmation. The FR base seems to go up and down in numbers although the overall total of flights remains relatively constant in summer in recent years. This winter saw a 25% rise of course.

I'm surprised that easyJet hasn't added Kos and Rhodes and certainly Larnaca. It might be a question of balancing the BRS fleet diagrams to get the best out of the complement, with KGS, RHO and LCA four hours or more each way. Perhaps a 15th based aircraft in 2018 might see movement in those directions.

easyJet did operate Valencia from 2004 until 2009 after which Ryanair took it up only to switch to Castellon in 2015 to serve the Valencia region of Spain. Seville with its Airbus connections might be thought to be a good shout and indeed Ryanair tried it for three summers from 2009 until 2011. easyJet already operates Lyon but only in winter, mainly for the ski market, and its position as France's third largest city after Paris and Marseille (both of which easyJet operate to from BRS, albeit for a limited summer season in the case of Marseille) ought to make it an attractive proposition.

Then there is my favourite 'missing' easyJet route - Milan Malpensa - that easyJet did serve from BRS from 2007 until 2010 but their daily service was up against Ryanair's daily 'Milan' Bergamo. Now that Ryanair has reduced Bergamo, with the niche and expensive bmi regional Malpensa route being the only other 'competition', it does seem perplexing that easyJet hasn't tried it again.

I suppose the truth is that the routes mentioned above might 'work' in terms of loads but there could be other routes, both from BRS and elsewhere, that bring the airline a greater return.

I would've thought Kos, Rhodes and Larnaca would be good routes for Easyjet as they are holiday routes which would have high yields through luggage and food and drink extras. While maybe the city routes don't have the high yields they want?

It might be that the particular city routes suggested (or some of them) don't bring a return that easyJet would be looking for* but they do have numerous city routes from BRS. Indeed nearly half their passenger numbers from BRS in 2016 were business travellers (two million of them).

That's why I'm always cautious when suggesting that route A or route B would 'work' because only those with responsibility within the airline would know how the numbers would be likely to stack up, as well as other difficulties that might intrude when considering a specific route.

*Meaning that there might be better options at BRS as well as elsewhere.

If there are to be any new routes starting this winter they aren't usually announced at the same time as the winter timetable is published. It does seem that the former summer-only routes that went year round in winter 16/17 have been retained for winter 17/18.
