A resent unusual visitor of an AN-26 is set to become a regular sight through Liverpool. Edwin Air Cargo which is based in the Isle of Man will begin cargo flights from their IOM base to Liverpool, followed by car services from IOM to DUB and BFS

Are we turning the clock back to "Car Via Air" days?

Yes, that's what I was referring to, however with you saying the Edwins Air Cargo was looking at "followed by car services from IOM to DUB and BFS" I did wonder whether the old car ferry by air was coming back!

I did actually enjoy a return trip on one of the Aer Lingus Carvairs from Liverpool to Dublin when I was a lot younger than I am now...:yawn:

I remember the Aer Lingus Carvairs operating from BHX to Dublin they were modified DC4s I think, certainly a interesting aircraft.

So did it have passengers at the back and cars or freight at the front ?

I remember as a kid seeing one at Southend in BAF livery, would have been in the 70s

I think it might have been Aviation Traders in Southend but not certain, from Bhx it was freight only remember watching them load up.

Cheers rollo.

There was a company which was originally based in Blackpool called Janes Aviation that did a lot of air cargo to the IOM including newspapers I would think. They later moved to Liverpool and became known as Emerald Airways and also began a passenger operation. They used HS748s and I think ATPs

We got there between us in the end.

I have a feeling the Carvair was developed as a replacement of the much older Bristol Freighter which started the air ferry services. If you look up old photos of Lydd Airport you should find an example. Lydd was once also known as Ferryfield because of these cross channel services.

I have to say I'm not of an age that I can actually remember seeing this operation !!

What a fantastic photo of the Carvair very atmospheric made perfect me with a Morris or Austin 1100 about to be loaded (my dad's 1st car 1963 reg 772 KOP) and strangely a red Land Rover in shot which looks identical to the one my youngest son has got and bought only a few weeks ago.

I digress, apologies.

Apologies to Carl who started the thread for the drift but I hope he will forgive us and enjoy the nostalgic digression.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
