Scandinavia’s largest regional airline Widerøe has today commenced flights between Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) and Bergen in Norway.

The twice weekly service with departures on Fridays and Mondays commenced just in time for the start of the Premier League season, with many of the passengers on the first arrival from Bergen being Norwegian Liverpool supporters.

Fans were able to fly direct to Liverpool from Bergen for the first time and take advantage of this new service ahead of Liverpool’s first home game of the season on Sunday. One of the passengers was the airline’s Chief Financial Officer John Arntsen who is a keen Liverpool fan himself.

Widerøe operate a 114 seat Embraer E190-E2 jet aircraft on the route and the Airport Fire and Rescue service gave the aircraft a traditional airport welcome with a water cannon baptism.

Staff from Marketing Liverpool were also on hand at the Airport to give out tourist information to arriving passengers as they disembarked the aircraft.

Bergen is Norway's second largest city and also the gateway to the Fjords, with this new direct service giving passengers across the North West the opportunity to either visit this popular city or the region’s beautiful fjordal area.

The twice-weekly service, with departures on Fridays and Mondays, commenced just in time for the start of the Premier League season, with many of the passengers on the first arrival from Bergen being Norwegian Liverpool supporters.

In fact, the airline brought forward the planned route launch by a week to cater for Liverpool’s first home game of the 2018-19 Premier League season against West Ham, at Anfield, on Sunday.

Fans were able to fly direct to Liverpool from Bergen for the first time and take advantage of this new service.

Bergen is reported to have the second highest number of LFC fans in Norway.

Very nice livery I thought. Apparently Wideroe has a long history with serving LPL, but nothing to do with LFC, it was more for ship crews changes for Norwegian Whalers.

This new route seems to have got off to an incredibly slow start. Little or no publicity apart from initial radio ads. Aircraft problems too I've heard, some flights have be affected by cancellation.

Not very good so far. I understand from the Norwegian end they are targeting football traffic. But from this end, who knows ? No one without publicity.

Well I hope so too. They have already flown the route quite often as a charter, so you would think so.

Apparently two of their E190 jets have been out of service recently .

Next weekend the fares are euro 566.00 round trip and weekend after 266.00 euro, so perhaps its starting to pick up.

I emailed them myself, as was told their Liverpool route is proving very popular. Maybe I was expecting too much too soon !

Out of interest I have looked a head, and certainly on BGO-LPL-BGO, there are some quite high fare over the Friday/Mondays of operation. I think this must be good news, indicating flights filling.

The other way around its not as good, however I think to be fair this would take longer. 😎
