I have to admit it makes me cringe when I hear clapping when the wheels touch down. When you've come to a standstill at the gate, fair enough!

I never understand the logic of clapping in such circumstances anyway. Do people clap when a taxi gets them to their destination safely or each time they get off a bus? I really can't see it. Happened on my Iberia Express flight to Madrid. I honestly didn't see the point of it and still don't!I think it's a charter phanominom, I don't think it happens on scheduled flights, certainly non that I've been on.

On coach outings the driver is sometimes given a round of applause at the end of the journey home with the hope also that grateful passengers will put something 'in the hat'.On the actual subject I never understood the clapping thing when a pilot lands anaircraft normally as I always thought that's what they are generally do for a living.
