Why you shouldn't clap too soon....

I never understand the logic of clapping in such circumstances anyway. Do people clap when a taxi gets them to their destination safely or each time they get off a bus? I really can't see it. I've certainly never clapped, not that clapping happens that often in my experience.

Happened on my Iberia Express flight to Madrid. I honestly didn't see the point of it and still don't!

There was quite a round of applause when we landed in Ibiza with Jet2, it was the first time that I'd heard it for quite a while.

Flying from Dublin to Birmingham a couple of years ago, it wasn’t the landing but the Ryanair fanfare which won a round of applause and a cheer.

Isn't there something going around instigated by university students (unsurprisingly) that your supposed to wave your hands apparently because clapping can cause a problem to some peoele who unfortunately are deaf its called jazz which I always thought was a form of music, then someone pointed out what about the blind now apparently its racist to "jazz" as thats what the Black and White Minsterals did while performing way back on the P.C. correct BBC years ago.

Personally I think I'll stick with my usual formula of sit still arms folded looking grumpy but no doubt someone will tell me it will upset Snow White or something.

On the actual subject I never understood the clapping thing when a pilot lands anaircraft normally as I always thought that's what they are generally do for a living.

I imagine if you don't like flying you'll be just happy to be back on the ground, hence the clapping. If it excites you so much at least wait until the aircraft "comes to a complete standstill at the terminal gate" before sharing your excitement.

On coach outings the driver is sometimes given a round of applause at the end of the journey home with the hope also that grateful passengers will put something 'in the hat'.

I've not yet witnessed applause on the no 10 bus along the High Street (most passengers seem to be obsessively engaged with their mobile phones even to realise it's time to get off). In Bristol the traditional way of acknowledging the bus driver on alighting is to utter the well-known Bristolian remark "Cheers Drive" which, loosely translated, means "Thank you Driver".

I'm with rollo on the notion that pilots fly aircraft for a living. They are probably the only people on board who don't hear applause when given, seated as they are behind a substantial door.

There's probably people in Brum who have been on the inner and outer circle buses for days just going round and round fixated with their mobile phones.

If any pilots ever deserved a round of applause on landing it must be Messrs Sullenbarger (Sully) and Skiles after putting down in the Hudson River in New York, but no doubt everyone was a bit occupied to bother on arrival, superb airman ship
