so why have a bunch been diverted

Aircraft only carry so much fuel. Those that have diverted made at least 1 approach into Gatwick. To give Gatwick a second go would likely have left them with not enough fuel to divert elsewhere so the question becomes "how sure are we that we can land off this next approach?". If there's enough doubt they'll divert.

Guessing Weather has to do with it although why did the PIA flight go to divert the weather here in Darlaston is fine and apparantly FR24 shows BHX's weather as similar to where I am rain and cold wind seems to eased off

Just to be perfectly accurate the EY21 operates AUH (Abu Dhabi) to Manchester rather than ABU which is Haliwen airport in Atambua, Indonesia. Pleased to hear that Birmingham has seen a B78X operate into it.

Flew on the EY22 recently, would estimate less than 90% full, so sadly cannot see Etihad wishing to dilute that by starting a BHX service.
