Birmingham: Daily Direct Link from BHX to the US

Use this prefix for new threads for Birmingham Airport
I know we’ve discussed it before and I know it creates debates however
I want to discuss translantic flights to America and which airline would fly.

For me I think Delta has 75% chance of operating a route between here bhx and EWR or JFK not because of blues but because it’s better than being delayed on the M40,M25 or on Trains through London
Breeze rumours were a load of nonsense
As Ian has said, the transatlantic market is struggling currently, due to Trump measures etc.
Our best chance is with a low cost model using efficient single aisle aircraft. Even that would be doubtful at the moment.
Tourism to Stratford on Avon is down around 60%, just to give a small reflection of the problem.

Cheers for your opinions I appreciate it.

Something else I want to discuss is domestic routes for bhx.Now we have routes to Aberdeen,Glasgow,Edinburgh BHD,BFS,IOM,JER,

I really think the airport is missing out on places like Newcastle,Newquay especially for the football season .
Someone I know who lives in Inverness has to travel down to London to go to Solihull via train.Thats costing £300-400 per week to go down to London to the midlands and back to London to Inverness.
Routes like that should comeback.

The problem is how many people would use these services on a regular basis to make them pay?

As has been said (quite often by me) an Airline (any Airline) will only start a service if they can make money from it. If the passenger figures are not there then it will not happen. Look at how France have gone with regards to domestic flights. If the flight is shorter than 2 hours then it does not happen! Everyone campaigning regarding the climate crisis is happy about that! I think we should consider ourselves lucky to have the domestic network we have at the moment (and that comes from someone who remembers flying from BHX to LHR)!

I cannot see the US market improving. when Trump goes by whatever means, traffic will return...and I keep saying it, Americans use American airlines, and if there is no demand for the midlands then they will not fly here. Whilst Europeans are cancelling US holidays in droves, so are Americans to Europe fearing a we hate Trump backlash.

World politics does have a massive impact on aviation.

The only transatlantic routes I can envosage would be Canada. And the continuation of flights to those lovely islands in the Caribbean and that big country which gives its name to the Gulf of Mexico.

Not all the moderators can be monitoring the forum 100% of the time. I was on a 2-hour flight today followed by a rail journey and I only just saw this thread now.

However, as I’m about to turn in for the night, I will be locking the thread until tomorrow so that everyone can take a step back, and I hope you will all keep things civil when we restart the conversation tomorrow.

35 minutes flight and 50 minutes stacking? 😎
Did BHX-LHR a couple of times with BEA in my teens in the sixties during my spotting days, once on a Viscount and once on a Vanguard which was probably the biggest aircraft operating from Birmingham back then.

Hi there all, very interesting new route today that took off from Glasgow airport to JFK, by global airlines. Need to keep a monitor this, otherwise if this takes off and there is demand, then this would be bad news for Birmingham airport, as Glasgow airport isn't far behind Birmingham airport in passenger numbers.

I most sure what your concern is….

BHX has carried 12,995,000 pax in the year up to March 2025, GLA carried 8,136,000 pax in the same timeframe…. We carry nearly 5,000,000 pax more a year than GLA! I single flight that carried less than 100 pax is not a concern. EasyJet carried more pax on every one of its flights to/from BHX today than global did on their GLA-JFK flight!

The other thing to point out about Global is despite attracting a disproportionate amount of noise in the media. they only had 95 passengers on board. for a charter flight. A number of whom are social media "influencers" i.e. parasites after free stuff and others bona fide journalists. I would not be at all surprised if BHX has considerably more than 100 crossing the Atlantic on real scheduled airlines with their own AOCs via their hubs each and every day.

That's a bit unfair there as many content creators are extremely hard working and they do pay for their own flights. And apparently Global didn't give out any free tickets. People were invited but had to pay.

Noel Philips is no parasite. His Loo Reviews are the thing of a legend.

It was a weird launch by Global. I felt embarrassed for Glasgow Airport.

For a brand new airline, I’m not shocked. Hi/fly crew is usually terrible most of the times, and they were operating the flight too

Had me excited for an announcement with this new thread!

But pretty big news to be the only destination called out by the CEO.

Also, it would be somewhat odd for Delta to serve a UK region rather than Virgin (no Delta presence out of MAN for example).

Are all the A321neos in Delta's fleet LR variants?

Seems that the distance between BHX-ATL will be pushing it (though still possible) for the LR. Maybe JFK is more feasible?

I can't see it happening tbh not with thier operation at Heathrow.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
