In total 1,005,861 people travelled through the airport in May, up by 11.1% compared to the same month last year. This means the airport has celebrated fifteen consecutive months of record breaking growth.
Long-haul routes continued to experience the greatest rise in demand with 16.5% passenger growth compared to the same month last year. Meanwhile, short-haul routes saw a 10.5% growth rate year-on-year.
Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “To be hitting the one million passenger mark in May is fantastic news for the airport. It shows us that the new airlines and routes we have recently introduced are proving popular with our passengers.
“We are now entering the busy summer season and so we hope that these consecutive record breaking figures will continue going forward.”
Scheduled traffic accounted for 89% of the total passenger volume for May with charter traffic making up the remaining 11%.
Scheduled traffic saw an increase of 21.6%, with significant year-on-year passenger growth to Heraklion (+122.3%), Reykjavik (+116.4%) and Dubrovnik (+92.1%).
Charter destinations with significant growth were Fuerteventura (+95.2%), Gran Canaria (+89.4%) and Lanzarote (+78.4%).

Do we know what the movements are like? 2003 seems to be the peak so far.

Another strong growth figure for BHX in May at 11.1%, another double digit record breaking month, the first time May has exceed 1 million pax in the airports history!!!

So 2016 so far is as follows:

Jan = +09.4% (circa additional 55,000 pax)
Feb = +15.2% (circa additional 94,000 pax)
Mar = +13.6% (circa additional 100,000 pax)
Apr = +13.2% (circa additional 100,000 pax)
May= +11.1% (circa additional 102,000 pax)

Average growth for 2016 so far 12.5% (+452,000 pax)

Projected Growth for 2016 @12.5% = 11,475,000

Regarding May, I tend to be a "glass half full" type of chap and, while acknowledging that double-digit increases are certainly not for sniffing at, am I alone in being a tad nonplussed by "just" 11%?

in fairness, and im sure im not alone in this but I was expecting a little more. That said, it is down time for the MEB2 as is always the case at this time of year and this is the source of a majority of our growth since March...

I suspect June will be higher than this with the start of the summer season proper and the new routes being started with Vueling, Monarch, Flybe and Ryanair...

that said 1-2 years ago, a single month of double digits growth would have been unthinkable. It will be interesting to see how these figure sit in the context of other airports!

Hi there nwoody2001, if Birmingham was to achieve 11,500,000 for this year, that is a massive increase in passenger number, to think that last year was 10,078,000 and then this year could be 11,500,000, that a huge one point five million passengers extra in one year, then to repeat these same passenger numbers, plus a few more, would mean, you could be looking at 13,000,000, which a figure like this would be an incredible figure to achieve, but I know that with what Birmingham has achieved so far, I think it could go further... Congratulations BHX on achieving over 1 million passengers in May 2016, another great month with what will be a great year for the airport.

Yes the figure isn't as high as I predicted back in April but no way am I complaining at growth of 11.1%

:kiss:

I thought that it may be a little more but I'm happy that we're over 1 million pax in May.

June - September will be no problem but will October manage to achieve +1 million too? We shall see.

Projected Growth for 2016 @12.5% = 11,475,000

Looking the clear favourite for the pax prediction competition (y)

11.1% that all. My 17.6% a tad off the mark. Maybe the French industrial action put peo....what the heck. 11.1% is great in anyone's book.

CAA annoying me in no longer publishing their provisional data.

Hi there ray and all, if Birmingham was to achieve 11,475,000 for this year and the same growth up to 2018, then Birmingham could quite easily be looking at 14,5000,000 by end of that year, that figure would be a phoneminal achievement for the airport as a whole, let's hope and pray... Andyc

It would be nice wouldn't it.

I'm sure that there will be bumps in the road but if all that I'm hearing actually comes off, then 2017 could be just as good as 2016 :)

Fingers crossed.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
