Warsaw changes to a BHX based aircraft for S17, there is also currently a big increase in away based flights.

A quick look at the timetable suggests that we currently have 4 mornings out of 7 seeing 5 departures.

Hopefully a sign that there will be 5 based for S17 although it's way too early too confirm. Anything can and probably will change over the coming months.

I notice that Girona has been added to both NCL and LBA. With Jet2 now on the route I'd say BHX must be in with a shout. It's practically unheard of for Birmingham to be seeing S17 this early in the year so Jet2 must have shaken them into action.

I don't think he said there will be no UK growth, but that majority of new based aircraft would be in Continental Europe.

Great to see Ryanair off to a good start for S17, but if they really want to show BHX some commitment, give us a new route or two and not just increase flights where Jet2/Monarch are going to go.

They'll probably just consolidate on existing routes maybe put on extra flights and not open any new bases in the UK and Brexit might just be an excuse for a plan that was already going to happen anyway.

It looks like to me as if Ryanair are fighting back and it appears to be Jet2 they are fighting. Both Newcastle and Leeds Bradford have both seen additional routes and frequencies announced for S17. BHX looks as if the same will happen here too, again a Jet2 base.

The press release:

Ryanair’s Birmingham summer 2017 schedule will deliver:

  • 3 new routes: Chania (2 wkly), Girona (3 wkly) & Reus (2 wkly)
  • More flights to: Faro (daily), Ibiza (6 wkly), Gran Canaria (3 wkly), Palma (11 wkly) & Tenerife (4 wkly)
  • 2 new summer services: Sofia (3 wkly) & Warsaw (3 wkly),
  • 28 routes in total
  • 141 weekly flights
  • 2.3m customers p.a.
  • 1,700* “on-site” jobs p.a.
Ryanair is the ideal choice for business and leisure customers, who can now choose from 28 Birmingham routes in summer 2017 and look forward to further improvements, as Ryanair continues its “Always Getting Better” programme, which includes more new routes, new digital features, new cabin interiors and even more low fares.

Ryanair’s Chief Marketing Officer, Kenny Jacobs said:

“We are pleased to launch our biggest ever Birmingham summer 2017 schedule, 3 months earlier than last year, which includes 3 new routes to Chania, Girona and Reus, the continuation of our winter services to Sofia and Warsaw to summer, and more flights to Faro, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Palma and Tenerife, which will deliver almost 2.3m customers p.a. and support 1,700 jobs at Birmingham Airport, as we grow our operation by 20%.

To celebrate the launch of our Birmingham summer 2017 schedule, we are releasing 100,000 seats for sale across our European network from just £19.99, which are available for booking until Monday (25 Jul). Since these amazing low prices will be snapped up quickly, customers should log onto www.ryanair.com and avoid missing out.”

William Pearson, Aviation Director, Birmingham Airport, said:

“We are delighted that Ryanair has launched its summer 2017 schedule even earlier this year, giving passengers travelling from Birmingham Airport more choice on a total of 28 routes. With three new routes now available for booking, Chania, Girona and Reus, passengers have more destinations than ever to choose from when planning their 2017 summer holiday.”

All three new routes are showing as BHX based aircraft, I've not been through the timetable yet but I'd say that there is a good chance of a 5th based.

Clearly this is in reaction to Jet2, especially with it being released this early, something unheard of for BHX. Reus and Girona come as no surprise at all, I guess Chania also competes with Jet2 to Heraklion.

Fantastic news but again I get the same feeling as when Jet2 announced...nothing that we don't already have. However last year Madrid and Verona were both announced after the first press release for S16, so hopefully we may get something more in the coming months.

The Catalonia market is becoming saturated with four carriers on BCN (assuming Norwegian remain), and FR and LS both launching flights to GRO and REU alongside the charter carriers. For this reason I'm a bit disappointed with their route choices. Chania is welcome but the other two markets they specifically mentioned earlier this year (Italy and Germany) have seen nothing.

Eastern Europe hasn't seen any movement either but that may turn out to be a prudent decision in the uncertainty of the post-Brexit climate.

Same old games from Ryanair is this a shot across the bow to Jet2? They also continue Sofia and Warsaw into Summer too so 5 "new" routes compared to Summer 2016, though Gerona and Reus have been operated before.
We had all the doom and gloom mongers saying that MAD and BCN wouldn't continue with several airlines and it would appear that are all performing well and ZB who came late to the game this summer have MAD on sale again for summer 2017.
Chania is a lovely city and that western part of Crete is lovely (much less touristy) than the Heraklion area. It's more good news for BHX and if it means a fifth aircraft again its bums on seats. I think Spain, Greece and Italy will do even better with holidaymakers abandoning Turkey due to recent sad events.

er....forgive me please folks but me thinks that perhaps the dear CEO may have had a wobbly when he indicated no UK expansion if UK chose Brexit.

Me thinks that the announcement this day could not be reversed in time thus plans should proceed.

The knawing little insects in my mind are telling me that the future shall remain fluid as UK negotiations proceed.

Again, whilst many are frustrated that the 5x new routes for summer 2017 might not be exciting to you, this is still a major boost fit the airport, especially if the airport gets a 5th base!

In Summer 2016, RYR operated 23 routes and 118 weekly flights. In 2017 this increases to 123 routes and 141 weekly flights ...that equates to an increase of just under 20%, which is pretty damn big!

As with last year, I suspect other routes may well be added in due course as travel trends more evident, and I hope such growth will be targeted towards Germany, Italy and Greece but the point is, RYR have continued to grow season upon season for the last few years nows at BHX ...signs that we as an airport are worth an investment.

On a loco front, next year could see +4 new units for Jet2, +1 more new unit for RYR, and a potential for +2 more from "another" ...good growth!!!

Indeed this is good news for BHX and if we get a 5th based aircraft, even better. Yes it is the same old Ryanair but its bums on seats and this is what BHX needs to grow, the more BHX grows, the more important it will become, the more important it becomes, more routes and airlines will follow. This can only be good news for the airport and getting back the Spanish capacity that we used to have.

The schedule as I make it going from the timetable, it definitely looks as if there will be 5 based. There are some gaps to fill but the Ryanair website still shows Ibiza at 2x weekly (will be 6x weekly) and Palma at daily (will be 11x weekly), so there are an extra 8 flights to be added. Very much subject to change as early days.

No problem.

It will be interesting to see if the extra IBZ and PMI fill the BHX based gaps or come from away based aircraft. There may just be room for another new route or two, of course they could always come from away bases.

More to Italy would be nice :)

OK, What exactly do Ryanair offer other than a cheap bus fare to the sun? I see no collaboration with any of the mainline carriers to connect with the thwarted world that Ryanair cannot penetrate.

They cannot walk over the line to low cost New York, Barbados, Cuba etc. is there a reason why not? The aircraft are abundant in storage, there can be no problem with employing qualified Air crew so why do they not enter the long haul market and compete with those carriers cutting their scheduling for the coming period?

Is Mr. O'Leary thinking about Laker?

Ray thanks for sorting out that timetable! I know how hard the FR website can be to peruse amazing you did it so quickly. :)

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
