It seems the freezing fog has played havoc with Exeter's operations today.

Flybe cancelled rotations to Manchester (x 2), Belfast City, Dublin, Amsterdam, Guernsey, Newcastle and Malaga. Flybe diverted its early morning Jersey flight to Newquay and Thomson diverted its Arrecife flight to Bristol. A few Flybe flights did manage to land during different parts of the day.

Exeter's weather record is usually very good.

I don't think so. So far as I know BRS is the only South West airport with Cat 3 (only on one runway as we've discussed before and perhaps the others don't need it very often anyway) although BOH might have it too. Bournemouth is in the massive government region of the South West (despite being on the South Coast) where Cheltenham is as close to the Scottish border as it is to the 'far end' of Cornwall.

Just tracked on FR24 and watched this mornings Thomas Cook flight from Palma De Mallorca (G-TCDK) making it's approach over the west side of Exeter for arrival on runway 08. However due to a private owner glidder G-CEMZ in the vacinity (en-route East Devon to Cornwall at time of posting), the A321 was unable to take the normal approach flight path and had to go-round before landing safely on runway 08. Kudos to the A321 crew for having to make a last minute decision.

High time EXT had controlled air space!

EDIT: G-CEMZ is a single engined light aircraft and not as shown on FR24.

Until recently I hadn't realised there was no controlled airspace around EXT when I read of efforts to rectify the situation. With passenger numbers heading back towards 1 mppa the airport will become busier as it continues to grow.

Due to reason(s) currently unknown, Gatwick was closed for a short while this afternoon and Thomson flight TOM4135 en-route from Funchal to Gatwick, worked by B757 G-OOBA, was diverted to EXT landing at 15.20hrs.

Flight expected to depart EXT at 16.45hrs as TOM4135 forward to Gatwick.

Not sure if this diversion will count towards passenger numbers at EXT, but as the saying goes, "every little helps."

Aircraft burst a tyre on the LGW runway according to reports. Numerous diversions to such airports as BOH, LTN, STN, SEN, EMA, LHR, SOU, BHX, CWL, BRS as well as EXT.

The CAA normally counts passenger numbers on diverted flights to the airport of intended operation. It carries this note on its route analysis tables.

In order to preserve market analysis all identifiable diversions are reallocated to the point of intended operation.

As previously mentioned, good to see EXT being utilized by other airlines for diversions.

Mist first thing in the North Somerset mountains meant the aircraft that were not Cat-3 equipped diverted. Currently it seems it's just the three that went to EXT. Visibility appears to have improved and from my house I can see clearly the top of Dundry Hill that was enveloped in mist a couple of hours ago.

All Flybe flights at EXT cancelled today. The airport website is not operating properly because of a technical issue but it does contain a note saying that the airport is closed and all flights are caancelled.

I understand that EXT is due to reopen at 06.30 hrs tomorrow morning (Saturday). The weather here in Exeter is expected to turn milder tomorrow (Saturday), so hopefully flights can resume, however expect delays etc due to aircraft and crews being dislocated.

Further update in the last five minutes from the EXT website is that Exeter Airport is now not expected to reopen until Sunday 4th March - subject to the usual caveats etc.

Crikey! EXT usually has such a good weather record so we'll allow them this time. I always feel for passengers though and many on Saturday would be leisure travellers looking forward to winter breaks.

Usually Exeter seems to be the last place in the UK to receive snow! Normally the surrounding area can cop it good and proper and we might, at best, receive only a few flakes if any!
Latest from the EXT FB page and local radio (at time of posting) is a possible reopening at 10.30am this morning.

The EXT based TUI B737 G-FDZW now en-route on it's booked Sunday empty positioning flight back from BRS to EXT as I type, albeit about ten hours late.
