Monarch Airlines plans to cut 50 jobs across its workforce - 25 of which will directly affect staff from Luton.

The decision will include workers at the airline's Luton head office, as well as Monarch Aircraft Engineering's bases and UK line stations at Luton, Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham airports.

The reductions, out of a total headcount of 3,000 employees, are being made in order to remain competitive, according to the company.

Monarch Travel Group CEO Peter Brown said: "While Monarch's business remains very strong, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that our cost base remains competitive.

"We obviously regret these job losses, but we are pleased that we have been able to limit the reduction to 50 staff. This in itself is a reflection of that fact that we were already operating an efficient business model and have, therefore, announced far fewer reductions than many other businesses in our sector."

Monarch Airlines currently operates a fleet of 30 aircraft, carrying more than seven million passengers a year to more than 100 destinations worldwide.

Sister company, Monarch Aircraft Engineering Ltd, provides engineering support to Monarch Airlines, as well as third party carriers around the world.

Looks like the 1st monarch MAX route will be out of Luton then! Do they still have their HQ building there? Been a while since i've been to LTN!

I think it's a one off pr flight to celebrate the arrival of the new aircraft and Monarch being 50 years old next year. Their first route was Luton to Madrid, although it's not a route that Monarch now fly.

It may be a new route as currently Monarch don't serve LTN-MAD. Would be a strange destination choice for a 'PR flight' if it was a one off.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
