Record cigarette haul at East Midlands Airport

More than 300,000 cigarettes were confiscated by the UK Border Agency at East Midlands Airport, in what they say is their biggest seizure to date at the hub. Customs officers discovered 301,960 cigarettes and 6kg of hand rolling tobacco in the suitcases of 16 British passengers returning from Tenerife. The previous record stood from 2004 when 252,000 cigarettes were seized. The group of smugglers would have spent £30,000 on cigarettes in Tenerife and could have sold them for £90,000 in the UK.

The UK Border Agency said on 22 November, one of the 16 passengers was escorted in a wheelchair to the customs checkpoint by airport staff. Her suitcase was opened to reveal a stash of cigarettes. ‘The discovery startled the passenger so much that she walked out of her wheelchair,’ the statement said !

No criminal charges have been brought against the people caught smuggling the cigarettes, but their names have been added to border watch lists which alert officials when smugglers make future journeys.

Man jailed over East Midlands Airport cocaine find

A man has been jailed for six years for attempting to smuggle almost £100,000 worth of cocaine into the UK in a parcel that was intercepted at East Midlands Airport.. Ben Nnamdi Peters, of Hamstead Road, Handsworth, had previously pleaded guilty to the charges.

In April, UK Border Agency officers at East Midlands Airport detected cocaine with a street value of £98,540 in a parcel addressed to a residential property in Birmingham. The following month officers executed a search warrant at the address in Handsworth where they arrested Mr Peters on suspicion of being involved in the importation of a controlled drug.

A spokesman for the UK Border Agency said: ‘This sentence reflects the severity of this crime. It sends out a message that we are serious about tackling the smugglers and organised crime groups responsible for bringing drugs into Britain.’

Use of facial recognition gates up 40% at East Midlands Airport

More passengers at East Midlands Airport have chosen to use facial recognition gates. An average of 22,143 passengers a month have used the e-Passport gates at the airport since April this year. That compares to an average of 15,737 passengers per month between April 2010 and 31 March 2011.

The automated border control gates were introduced at the airport in 2009. They scan passengers' faces and compare them to the photographs digitally stored on their passports.

UK Border Agency Midlands assistant director, Alex Lawther, said: ‘Britain's border security controls are among the toughest in the world. By using the latest technology such as e-Passport gates at East Midlands Airport we are providing a secure and convenient self-service alternative to the conventional border to allow passengers with a biometric passport to pass through the border securely.’

East Midlands latest airport to get hologram assistant

A hologram has been installed to advise passengers of the security process at East Midlands Airport. The development comes less than a week after Edinburgh Airport launched its two hologram assistants. They are also helping passengers at a number of other UK airports including Luton and Manchester.

East Midland's virtual assistant will remind passengers about current liquid restrictions and tell them about the screening process. It is a holographic projection of senior terminal services assistant Heather Hodson and part of a £200,000 refurbishment of the security area.

Brad Miller, managing director of the airport, said: ‘We have looked at the way the security search area is being used and have redesigned the existing area to ease the passenger journey, improve passenger flow and better utilise the area. In addition to structural changes, we are also mindful that passengers are not always aware of the current security requirements, and to help prepare our passengers in advance we need to find ways of communicating important messages.'

‘The new hologram attracts attention, is customer friendly and provides passengers with simple, informative messages which we hope will help improve our customers' journey through the airport.’

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
