Well it's good that Flybe have jumped in here....it's better than nothing. Does anyone know though if the BFS route is being withdrawn only from CWL?

Your absolutely right. Like you say it's better than nothing. I don't know whether or not Bmibaby have pulled the BFS route from other airports but it is likely. All airlines that operate into the International airport are suffering where there's a similar service operating into the City airport. The City airport is much more popular with it's central location. I think the International airport is around nine or ten miles out of town so if you're on the wrong side of Belfast you could have a fifteen or twenty mile trip by road afterwards.

Ryanair have started to operate into Belfast City airport so the runway is long enough for the Boeing 737-800 subject to restrictions. The runway is 1829m x 45m. The airport company is looking to lengthen the runway to improve it's operational capabilities.

[textarea]Flybe honours its 500,000th Cardiff passenger

Flybe, the UK’s Number One domestic airline, yesterday honoured its 500,000th passenger from Cardiff Airport with a presentation to local Bridgend resident, John Marsden, who flew on the afternoon service to Edinburgh. Mr Marsden was given a certificate commemorating the historic milestone together with a bottle of champagne with which to celebrate by Flybe’s Sales Manager, Paul Willoughby.

In the short 22 months since Flybe began operations out of Cardiff, it has become the largest carrier at the airport with over a third of all scheduled departures operated by Flybe, with a choice of up to 106 flights a week on seven routes namely Aberdeen, Belfast City, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Jersey, Newcastle and Paris Charles de Gaulle.

Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer, Mike Rutter, said: “We were delighted to celebrate Mr Marsden being our 500,000th passenger from Cardiff less than two years after starting services from the airport where, despite the wider economic challenges thrown at everyone last year, we were the only scheduled airline to show growth.

“We remain 100% committed in continuing to develop our regional services to and to providing the widest, most convenient and affordable travel to and from Wales.”

Spencer Birns, Cardiff Airport’s Head of Air Service Development commented: “We were delighted to welcome Flybe’s five hundred thousandth passenger through our doors yesterday and the airport was pleased to be able to celebrate this important milestone with one of our busiest airlines.

“We hope the airline will continue to expand its services from Cardiff in the future to offer even more choice of destinations and frequency for South Wales travellers from their local airport.”

Added Mr Rutter: “In extending our congratulations to Mr Marsden and hoping we made his day a memorable one, we now look forward to welcoming our one millionth passenger on board in the not too distant future!”

Local newspaper reports today suggest that Flybe and the CWL management are in talks regarding routes to Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Lyon (and possibly others), operated by the Embraer 175 of which the airline has ordered a batch (announced this week).

Mike Rutter of Flybe has said the 175 will be used at CWL.

Hi Local. Yes I read this too which seemed interesting and we will wait to see from later next year how things will pan out. I think it's a case of watch this space but it does show hope for the future, with a bit of luck

I wonder if Flybe will capitalise on the withdrawal of the Inverness route from Bristol and launch the route from Cardiff. There must be a sufficient numbers of people to make the route viable with a Q400.

The Bristol easyJet route hasn't been withdrawn entirely.

It's still operating daily on weekdays and is due to return at weekends the weekend after next.

The Sat and Sun rotations have been taken out of the system over the past two or three weekends plus this coming weekend, because (according to easyJet) of the ongoing atc industrial action in Spain, France and Greece that is having a general negative effect on the airline's capacity to maintain all its services.

Intriguing speculation on the Welsh forum as to what routes Flybe might operate from CWL.

That forum also has a section where members can operate their own virtual airline from CWL with type of equipment, routes, ancillary charges etc.

There are some very optimistic networks being suggested but it's all good fun and probably not taken seriously.

Winter 2013-2014 - ski flights

Announced today that Flybe would operate weekly flights on Saturdays to Geneva, Grenoble, Lyon and Chambery from 21 December until late March/early April, with a second weekly Chambery from early February.

This is very good news for CWL that lost its ski charter flights two or three years ago.

There is no information yet whether the fights will be in conjunction with a tour operator.

Airline Flybe has said some of its routes could "possibly" be scrapped after it announced plans to cut 500 jobs across the business.

The Exeter-based airline operates a number of services from Cardiff Airport but does not have any staff based there.

The firm said it was reviewing all of its operations as part of its cost-cutting measures despite reporting a return to profit.

Flybe currently employs 2,700 staff.

The pilot's union, Balpa, said it was "shocked" by the decision to cut jobs.

I would suppose the airport will have some protection with it not having a crew base there which all adds to the running costs of the base. This doesn't of course mean some routes wont be under threat. LBA is in a similar predicament as it too doesn't have any crew based there.

Yes, or possibly bmi regional.

I expect both airlines will be scanning the Flybe axed routes around the country to see if anything might interest them.

There is a consultative committee meeting at CWL tonight that was postponed from an earlier date with speculation in some quarters that a replacement carrier might even be announced this evening.

Last week Flybe announced the discontinuation of CWL-GLA and CWL-CDG but nothing was mentioned then about CWL-EDI.

No details of equipment or frequency have yet been given although the remarks of the Loganair spokesman could be taken to suggest there might be an increased frequency compared with the current Flybe operation. Loganair have no aircraft as large as Flybe's 78-seater Dash 8-400s that currently operate the route.

Loganair have no aircraft as large as Flybe's 78-seater Dash 8-400s that currently operate the route.

Loganair has now pulled the this route before it started. It would have used Dornier 328 aircraft in conjunction with Flybe.

Since the original route announcement CityJet has announced it is to commence a 3 x daily CWL-EDI at the end of March using Fokker 50s. Loganair's fares were coming out generally higher than CityJet is likely to charge (not yet on sale but comparing with CWL-GLA which is on sale and commences at the end of this week), and 6 x daily between CWL and EDI (which would have been the case with Loganair and CityJet on the route) would have been difficult to sustain.

The result is probably better for CWL in the long run and certainly potentially better for CityJet which will have no competition on the route now.
