Really good video showing some of the training that the airport firefighters get to do to be ready for any emergency and it's got some cool scenes of the fire trucks!

The national airport for Wales is continuing to perform strongly and is well on track to achieve double digit passenger growth at the end of this year, having already welcomed one million passengers* just eight months into 2018.

Figures show that at this point last year, Cardiff Airport had welcomed just over 935,000 passengers, representing a 7% increase in 2018.

Additionally, the month of July 2018 alone saw double digit growth, having welcomed 12% more passengers over the busy peak summer month.

At just over halfway through the year, Cardiff Airport has already seen many exciting announcements and developments, including the launch of a direct daily service to the Middle East with Qatar Airways, completion of a £4 million investment into the improvement of the customer experience within the terminal and the unveiling of Cardiff Airport's draft Masterplan - #CWL2040 - detailing its vision and ambitious plans for the next 20+ years. The draft document, which is currently open for public consultation can be viewed here .

Also, announced as part of a joint venture with the Welsh Government, Cardiff Airport will take over the operation, management and maintenance of the St Athan airfield and business park in 2019

Deb Barber, CEO of Cardiff Airport, commented: “At just over halfway through 2018, it’s promising to see such strong passenger figures. This summer, for example, is our busiest summer in a decade and we’re continuing to improve the experience for our passengers, with the launch of a new Meet & Greet parking service just recently.

“With strong monthly results such as July’s 12% increase and 8% passenger growth for the rolling 12 months, we are well on track to deliver the double digit growth projected at the beginning of the year.

“Our work continues to deliver a sustainable airport business which encompasses a diverse portfolio of products and services, but, more than anything, we are passionate about flying the flag for Wales and proudly acting as a key gateway to the UK for international visitors.”

Yep it is growing well! And it's growth will continue in the future!

This morning when i checked social media i saw something surprising that in a minor way may show how Cardiff Airport is becoming a more attractive option for passengers in the area.

My dad's best friend checked in on Facebook this morning at the airport and it looks like he's flying to Mallorca with TUI. The reason why i mention this and think in a minor way its important is that for as long as I've known him he's flown from Bristol. He lives in Newport so Bristol is more closer and holidays in Spain several times a year. His daughter lives there and he usually flies Ryanair to see her. I think him and his partner using Cardiff is an example of how the airport is now much more appealing to use from the whole of South Wales. It'll be interesting to see if when he goes to see his daughter if he uses Cardiff for that! But i think it's also a small example of how Cardiff is lessening the leakage out of it's area.

Yes Jerry you are right. Also those 10k QR pax would have gone somewhere else to depart or arrive the UK (unless brand new incremental pax).

I can only hope these pax enjoy the CWL and QR experience, come back, spread the word and really help the service to flourish.

Also in the next month there are some really big universities returning with thousands of international students (majority according to stats from China and Southern Asia subcontinent - perfect for QR). Uni's include: Cardiff, Bristol, Swansea, Exeter, Aberystwyth, Bath - all ostensibly in the CWL catchment. Hope CWL considering stands at the various fresher fairs.....

My partner and her sisters are off to majorca next week for their annual jolly and they're going vueling from cwl instead of easyjet for the first time so I do think people are beginning to look at cwl as a possibility which is good news

There is more of a positivity around Cardiff now though it does have its detractors and still has lots of work to do but i do believe that there are people flying from there that in the past wouldn't have even considered it an option.

I sometimes wonder about people's flying habits. Like you I wonder how many of the 10,000+ people who used Qatar in July would have used other airlines/other airports if the service had not been operating, or simply not flown at all?

I'm not sure about Exeter but the other universities' Chinese and other Southern Asia students are certainly up for grabs. I suspect that most will still use LHR but I wonder how many have used BHX, whether Qatar or Emirates, in the past and how many might switch to CWL instead.

Many people are creatures of habit. If they've become used to flying from BRS they often continue to do so. If they get into the habit of flying from CWL the same is likely to apply. I've said before that neighbours of ours flew to Malaga from CWL one year because where was no availability on the holiday they wanted from BRS which is nine miles from where we live . For several succeeding years they used CWL although there would have been availability at BRS. They said they were used to CWL and saw no reason to change even though it meant a 60-mile car journey each way instead of nine.

Cardiff becomes first regional airport to join leading tourism trade association
Cardiff Airport has re-affirmed its position as a key gateway to the UK for leisure and business visitors by becoming the first regional airport to join UKinbound - the country’s only trade association that represents the inbound tourism industry.

Currently 30% of Cardiff Airport customers are visitors to the country, from destinations across Europe and further afield, however with over 3.5 million* international visitors travelling to Wales and the south west of England each year, a key objective of joining UKinbound will be to help increase the number of inbound passengers using the Airport as the entry and/or departure point to the country.

The Airport also recently welcomed a new Qatar Airways service between Cardiff and Doha, which has created a wealth of new opportunities for visitors to fly into the UK from long haul destinations such as Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan and India.

Deb Barber, CEO of Cardiff Airport, said: “As a key gateway to the UK and the national airport for Wales, we are committed to strengthening our position within the industry and to promote all of the economic and employment benefits that come with more inbound tourism.

“Cardiff Airport is a convenient gateway for those visiting the UK for leisure, business, for further education or to visit family and friends.

“Joining UKinbound will connect us with key global tour operators who, when planning trips into the UK for their customers, should consider flights into/ out of Cardiff Airport as an easier, more convenient alternative to the bigger airports. Visitors will have an opportunity to explore Wales and the south west of England – both of which have so much to offer.”

Mark McVay, chairman of UKinbound added, “One of our key priorities is to help support and promote tourism and new tourism product across the nations and regions of the UK. Following our successful Annual Convention in Cardiff earlier this year, we are delighted that Cardiff Airport has joined the Association which will help to foster greater collaboration with the travel trade in bringing new inbound business to the area.”

Just typical! I'm working on my day off and there are 2 passenger wide bodies on the ground at the same time! Privilege Style 767 300er EC-LZO and Qatar Airways 787 8 A7-BDB.

My dad's best friend his now back from his holiday to Mallorca and his overall experience was really positive and from what he said he'll probably end up using Cardiff a lot more in the future!

Dave Lees won't like that! Just arrived and he's losing passengers.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
