Between 1968 and 1974, Leeds City Transport exclusively bought double door double deck buses, similar to the one in your photo. They were both Leyland Atlantean and Daimler Fleetline and all built by Charles H Roe at Crossgates. (Not Saunders Roe). They were known as 'jumbos' and were way ahead of the average buses of the day.yes double doors is only a London thing. there were some double door buses in leeds maybe 30/40 years ago with one of the leyland atlantean variants (not the saunders-roe ones)

also some pretty deluded demands "He also suggested bringing back conductors so drivers did not have to do everything" paid for i suspect by those of us still stupid enough to work for a living so all those free pass people can swan around during the daytime - and they don't even send us a card at christmas to say thank you!
On at the front off in the middle as it was years ago, unless in bus station then off at front and middle.True for most if not all WY bus stations. We are not geared up in the same way as London for double-door bus operations
It doesnt work at a bus stop with a bus shelter as most only have one open end on the road side. So if you got off via a central exit door you'd be stepping off into the kerb and into a metal/perspex wall forming the side of the shelter. That wouldnt be allowed, so they'd have to replace or adapt most of the regions' bus shelters before the new buses went into service. Expensive! On at the front off in the middle as it was years ago, unless in bus station then off at front and middle.
Well the bus stop where i get on the bus pulls up to the start of the shelter thus leaving the middle and rear of the bus well clear of the shelter. I suppose it's where the stop is. And should the bus pull up at start of shelter or end of it?It doesnt work at a bus stop with a bus shelter as most only have one open end on the road side. There were also problems with centre doors in that some unscrupulous passengers used to get on via the centre door and by pass the driver, so avoiding paying.
I think it would be just the ticket….On at the front off in the middle as it was years ago, unless in bus station then off at front and middle.
First Leeds current Wright buses carry 73. Not sure of the permitted standing but they never stick to it.Double doors obviously speed up the journey as passengers getting on dont have to wait until those getting off have done so. The central doors do reduce the bus capacity though so either the bus has to be bigger to offset that or it carries less people. From memory, the Leeds double door 'jumbos' carried 78 passengers. The WYPTE single door buses introduced in 1975 carried 76, but we're considerably shorter. Without the double doors, the jumbos would probably have had a capacity of around 82.
I imagine too that double door buses cost more to buy and maintain too. They'd be great to have but clearly they are not popular outside the capital.
Not that any of this impacts LBA given none of these buses go there. Its single deckers with a single entrance only.
The standing capacity is huge compared to the old days when it was limited to 8.First Leeds current Wright buses carry 73. Not sure of the permitted standing but they never stick to it.
Had enough of First Leeds so now doing the train for Kirkstall Forge
It'll be interesting to see where they place orders for all these buses. And what happens to the many First Bus vehicles, many of which are not very old. Many of which are ancient too!Are these campaigners known as the
Group Against Limited Bus Access?
Plus we can only hope the fussy vinyls on the lower portion of the bus don’t feature on the standard livery and that the publicity seeking Mayor’s name is removed from it.
No tram system, a half finished white rose station, massive cost overruns on road improvements, no sign of the LBA Parkway station…WYCA are doing a fine job…Looks like the tram system which was never going to LBA is never going anywhere, anytime soon judging by the press release sneaked out at midnight.
