They are ignoring the fact that most people switch off bluetooth as it consumes a lot of battery power.

So the number of data points generated is not huge.

Plus the passenger process cannot be a single one for all passengers. Some loiter in toilets others go straight through. Some have complicated immigration or customs interactions while others sail through. To average out these times gives a incorrect picture of times that should and are unique to the individual.

I suspect the system has evolved a bit over the years, and I also that they are well aware that many people don't necessarily have bluetooth enabled. There are other ways to track individual devices, e.g. via wifi. Similar systems exist to track people's journeys through supermarkets. It's also entirely possible to track people's journey through the airport via cameras and general pattern recognition (not facial recognition), although that would be a bit more expensive and it's hard to see the added value when cheaper methods will suffice.

I can't find it at all on the Weston Mercury website. However, I suspect it's based on an airport press release that was issued yesterday.

The airport has been carrying an advert for this hotel on its main website page for the past several weeks. The link from the advert takes you to the hotel website which says, ".............presently accepting reservations for arrival on 24 February 2017 and beyond"

So it looks as though it will open three weeks from today. It's taken about a decade to get a hotel but they got there in the end.

Aircraft stands and Silver Zone car park

I had a walk around the perimeter of the airport today (the first time since October) and there is a lot of earth moving going on. The construction of the three new aircraft stands near the emergency gate in Cooks Bridle Path seems a serious exercise in earth moving as the side of a small hill needs to be shifted. The work appears to be progressing well.

Further around where Cooks Bridle Path becomes Winters Lane there is a huge area of land being transformed into the Silver Zone car park extension (3,500 new spaces?). This is part of a £20 million scheme that will include enhancements to the Silver Zone reception area and a new multi-storey car par on the north side (main side) of the airport.

For the past 20 years BRS seems to have been in a perpetual state of building work. Since 2010 £150 million has been spent with over £50 million in the decade before that, and it goes on.

The eventual aim still seems to be to demolish the old terminal building which is currently used for admin etc and construct a new building nearer the current terminal. This would free up space for more stands that would be accessed by another walkway.

Yes, I've been into the old terminal a few times in recent years. The last time was in September to the Aviation Fair.

I suppose the thing that many people remember is the outside first-floor verandah where well-wishers would gather to wave (and sometimes shout) to friends and family walking to the aircraft or welcoming them back from a visit somewhere.

I don't know what the timescale is. It's just that removal is still in the plans. Could be a few years away perhaps.

Hotel

The long-awaited onsite hotel - Hampton by Hilton - finally opened for business this week.

So BRS is no longer the only top 10 UK airport without an onsite hotel; some other UK airports outside the top 10 also have onsite hotels.

I'll be sad to see the old terminal building go. Instant hit of nostalgia every time I see it!

Remember being taken to lunch at the airport a year or two after it opened (maybe c. 1960) by my father. White tablecloths, waiter service & a great view of the apron, IIRC it was on the 1st floor with a balcony outside. Seem to recall a car carrier (Bristol Freighter) loading up & a few other movements.
Can't believe that a full restaurant service lasted too long in the swinging sixties!

Not absolutely certain but isn't the car an Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire (possibly a Riley) ? that must have weighed at least a couple of tons, if not more!

well the day is here for the opening of the hotel as been reported in the press. do we know if this will happen today tues or weds. when its open might be worth going in and have a look. it wonders if this will be the first hotel at the airport or if any more will spring up in the future.
