PerpetualBrum's latest hotel update.

Like the Bristol Airport Hilton, the bedrooms are modular shipping containers.

Is this temporary, or is building hotels from portakabins the quickest way of putting them up?

I believe that it is now the quickest and cheapest way of getting it done. The rooms are assembled remotely then craned into position, bolted together, hooked up to the utilities, furnished and ready to go (y)

I'm sure it's actually far more complicated than that :)

Seems crazy to build here when the airport needs to increase it's Terminal space. But, I'm sure it's all been thought out

Yes that's basically how they do it pretty much the same way they do the cabins on modern cruise ships, crane them up, plum them in, wire them up and lay the carpet.

That's very interesting, thanks for posting it.

They are planning to build a second air rail link and do something funky with the existing one.

Also planning to wipe out the NECs car park as well as a most of the car parking for International.

I have to question is this necessary? I'd much prefer them to put it over in the actual Business park and put in a light rail link to make this an actual transport hub :p

Glad to see they have considered the tram :D

A platform six at the station (I think there is room for it) and four tracking the line to Birmingham/Coventry is something I would have hoped for to boost capacity although I appreciate this is just a CGI render.

Very interesting. Here in Essex we get excited by a new BP garage with and M&S mini store or a drive thru coffee shop.

Anyway. I do note that the proposals exciting though they are will prejudice very major growth in the airport to the south east of Eurohub*. So is this a concession to a new HS2 terminal integrated hub??

* I know it ceased to be called that just after the Romans left, but you know us oldies......

With a potential new or extended terminal taking up the area that is now a surface car park, I was under the impression that a new multi storey car park was to be built here.

It will be interesting to see how this development fits in with the airport master plan.

Interesting proposal.

Does anyone know what the main reason for people currently using international is? Whenever I've used it, I've either gone to London or Manchester/Preston and those services will likely be accommodated at the new HS2 interchange. I wouldn't be surprised if the stretch of WCML between New Street and Rugby essentially becomes a commuter line from Rugby into Birmingham once HS2 opens.

Regardless of where people would "prefer" this development to go, it should nevertheless be seen as a good thing - somebody wanting to develop a Midlands site and provide new offices for business.

Anyone got any idea whats going on with the 2 air rail links? Not sure how easily the existing one could be extended so can understand building a second one, but then why keep the existing one? Only reason I can think of is if the 'Eurohub" was extended into a 'new' terminal building. That way you'd have an air rail link going to each terminal.

Glad to see they have considered the tram :D

Good thing (y) - anyone know if the plans for the tram extension to BHX have progressed any further?

'They are planning to build a second air rail link and do something funky with the existing one.' (thanks nbdm)

It's of course impossible to comment when we are waiting for detail, months overdue. Surely they can't have a final plan without doubt for discussion otherwise failure to send it for review now is simply wasting time and that is never a good strategic plan - like delaying planting a tree.

Is the masterplan out yet or is that still unknown?

@Coathanger16 I too mainly use International to go to London or go into Birmingham (more trains stop here)
But I know it is very busy whenever anything is on at the NEC as it has direct links all over the place, I can't see HS2 helping with that much or detracting from International being useful - Oxford/Bournemouth/Reading for example.
And HS2 won't cater for Coventry (I've heard they are not happy) who currently get three fast trains an hour that take around 60 minutes to London?

If one of the car parks along the perimeter fence to the runway were moved to the patch of land near International that would allow the terminal to be expanded quite easily? (As Ray mentioned)
However a properly integrated terminal with HS2 is a great idea if it happens (reminds me of Paris CDG and the TGV or Schiphol)

Out of interest, are there any ridership statistics for the air rail link?
It always seems well used whenever I am nearby (at all hours of the day & night)

A reason for a totally new air rail link could be because of the age of the existing infrastructure being a limiting factor for capacity and speed across to HS2. There could be other problems like maintenance access or legal stuff between HS2 and the Airport/NetworkRail/Virgin. Just thinking out loud :cautious:

I'm really hoping that this option remains on the table and that the Arden Cross development doesn't take over so much that there will be no land left for airport development. This is a golden opportunity which needs some long term thinking.

I have a feeling that we will be well into next year before we hear anything.

I couldn't agree more! (y)

As I said before, we don't want BHX to turn into Heathrow in a few decades with houses galore and no room to put anymore infrastructure (heck, even HS2 might want to expand - I believe there will be four tracks right the way up to the junctions to phase two anyway) I hope there is a large car park provision too.

The entrance to the security check area on the first floor is to be expanded.
This means the WHSmith store and the refreshments bar are to close.I understand that those 2 facilities will close this Friday,15th December.
Hopefully if done right it might mean an end to the horrendous queues we have seen over the past few years, especially in the early mornings.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
