For an airport of its size, the check-in area is surprisingly small. The current set up is pretty much an L shape, if that could be extended over the drop off car park to create a full square, that would create a huge new space for terminal expansion.

The problem with BHX is that a decent sized terminal could be located within the current site, its just that it would require demolition of existing facilities, so new capacity would have to be provided whilst demolition and rebuild took place. Providing that extra temporary capacity is the issue.

Thanks all for the welcomes.

I've also wondered the same, if they added a restaurant or bar giving views across the apron I'm sure it would be extremely popular.
It's odd that there wasn't anything put into the pier initially when it was built, it's quite annoying also that there isn't much seating overall, even less with a view of anything outside - most of the glass is tinted at the bottom and a lot of the seats are inside gate holding areas. :(

@Ianbutty I think building a terminal on the elmdon side could cause more issues than it's worth unless a lot of money was spent. The surface access there isn't great by road, the A45 struggles as it is and it's a fair trek to the M42 from there too - there isn't any kind of rail access which would be pricey to add in also, either via tunnel or round the A45.
It's a shame the existing side is so condensed, the Novotel and other hotels opposite the terminal really constraint it and building the new Hilton will only make matters worse unfortunately.
I do agree that one single large terminal would work well though.

Regarding the new junction, I'm sure I'm not the only one out there thinking that this would be the perfect location for the recently mooted M42 service station. It could sit east of the motorway and maybe there could be an exit from the southbound carriageway. Perhaps the proposal shows a pair of roundabouts with that possibility in mind?

Meanwhile, another one from PerpetualBrum. I think this picture gives an idea of just how much the hotel will impact on the BHX skyline.

Based on the discussions over the summer with regard to the infrastructure at BHX and how its struggling to cope with the Pax demand and has lead to massive delays, its interesting to note that is really hasn't dented BHX's standing on the World Stage with regard to Punctuality on on-time performance.

The OAG has voted BHX as a 5 Star Airport for punctuality and on-time performance ranking it the BEST in the UK and No. 5 in the World for all airport that took part.

See the link below, makes for some interesting reading:

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but that's because these awards are measuring the on-time performance of arriving and departing aircraft. So an airport could have all aircraft arrive on-time, but if every passenger had to wait 3 hours to get through the airport, it would still count as a 5 Star Airport.

Congratulations are still of course due for receiving this status regardless.

It seems they are going to add a lot of remote stands, but, could the terminal cope with that?

An image from today's British Aviation group meeting, which shows the next stages of development (it's ashame there is some area missing to the left).

I always though that building a walkway to the remote stands would help. I suppose the question is what will be on the end? A building with some more lounges and gates? I suppose time will tell.

Go to finally see SOMETHING is happening behind the scenes ;)

I notice there's a blue shape off to the right (don't know what they're called but the remote stands where Flybe parks some aircraft) - new terminal building? Low cost carrier terminal?

Having said that, it seems like blue is current infrastructure and yellow is planned, in which case what is that blue bit off to the right?

So is that yellow extension to the terminal and a low cost pier being added but look on the other pic it shows that yellow pier going all the way round to the remote stands maybe a full pier . I that pic as well there's an extension to the terminal outward between international pier and old euro hub .

I think that is the current fuel farm

I can't expand the picture enough to read the terminal plan but I would say that the fuel farm is south of this presently so maybe it is a new passenger facility - crazy though that it's covered by the other insert!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
