For that reason i think its a bit of an own goal that the opportunity to move the airport completely, aligned with HS2 construction somewhere to the east of the M42, was not taken - though i completely realise that the likelihood of that getting planning permission is also small and the costs exorbitant (though blowing a £bn or so over the next few years could've been repurposed. In other words, BHX might have a problem in 20 years time when it can no longer build new infrastructure and is effectively stuck at that size for ever more.

Was that ever actually set out as a plan to move the airport entirely? I ask as it'd be interesting to look at what the proposals looked like when it was discussed but obviously, if it was just an idea then those won't exist.

Some of the stats in that article are eye opening. Up to 18mppa the airport can currently manage (with a few tweaks here and there), but 36mppa is the conceivable maximum. And to get to that maximum, the airfield needs to work like clockwork. For me, it never will given 1) a lack of stands and 2) the taxiway configuration. On the latter, the lengthy taxi for either a landing or arriving aircraft (wind dependent) along which there are no airport facilities (stands, mainly) will serve to constrain total movements.

And there is no real prospect of ever being able to do anything about it. Engineering it would be a big challenge on the east of the runway, given the noise barrier, WCML and Marston Green. West would be easier, if you took away the golf club. But planning is never going to happen, given how many people are under the flight path very close in to the runway. The latter is pertinent when you consider that many planning applications will be needed for airfield changes to get from the 18mppa (which might've gone up a bit since) to 36mppa max.

(note, at LHR, a very minor airfield amendment to move some taxiways almost triggered a public enquiry and was eventually shelved to be swept up in the third runway DCO, owing purely to the fact that locals would be subjected to a handful of extra flights a day)

Thats the reason why I think that progressing with the masterplan at the time - leaving aside the issue of how it would be paid for and how planning would be acheived - would've been the best outcome. And why i suspect that BHX will find itself at a dead end in ~20 years time with nowhere to expand to and no prospect of being able to afford to move (assuming global passenger growth continues).

I know it's been that way for yonks now, but it took me having a good look over at the new "shed" they've put in front of stands 8L/C/R (now 6/7/8 i think?) to really notice how 3rd world it looks. Any plans to demolish these completely?

The same source suggests the M42 link to BHX is delayed 9 months until Dec 2025 !

The dual carriageway from J5a to the airport is substantially done - not sure how much of the roadway itself needs to go down but all the earth has been moved, for sure. The last few times i've been past they are cracking on with the slip roads. I expect that will be open before the end of the year (i think they have said Winter 2025, meaning 24/25, so it could feasibly open anytime from November to March).

The bit that is delayed is the free flow link from M42 SB to A45 EB.

Still amazed how long this has been padded out for for what is a relatively simple project...

I know people from Catherine-De-Barnes & Hampton who have been cut off and getting well fed up with the number of delays

Fed up of all these hs2 ,M42 works to be frank with you.I used to go to Solihull via Catherine de barnes way now it’s taking me around 20-25 mins to get from chelmsley to Solihull.We need clarity on what’s going on month by month in my opinion and let us know about other planned works or diversions taking place not just a few days before it happens I mean at least 3 weeks.
