Im not being funny but to me this is a waste of money. Glasgow and its area already has an international airport, stop wasting money SNP and put it into your local services that you keep blaming Westminster for. Maybe they should approach Greybull.

If Monarch operated in Scotland, i would love to have seen what they would of done. Yet the airports south of the border just have to get on a deal with the problem.

Agreed. It's the politicians that are the problem. I love Scotland and its people and have spent many happy visits to that country, the last in September this year. I look forward to future visits. I suppose the only thing to be said about giving PIK a helping hand is that it could develop into a cargo facility. Ironically, it's got a rail connection whereas GLA hasn't, but that hasn't done too much for PIK's passenger numbers in recent years.

I think i read somewhere that they were keeping it open because Glasgows runway wasn't long enough to full cargo planes and diversions and because it has a curfew. Whether that is true or not I don't know. It does seem to be becoming a money pit for them.

It's reported that the Scottish Government will put Prestwick up for sale - as an airport. The government has ruled out selling the land for housing or development.

The Scottish Government bought Prestwick for £1 six year ago and it is reported that the airport has accumulated nearly £50 million of debt in that time.

Its CEO admitted to the Scottish Parliament last year that passenger flights don't make any money for the airport.

There was a lot of airlines call in to top up fuel to cross the pond.As the years went by there was a few bother airports do the same thing which airports started looseing out and aircraft getting more fuel efficient.Prestwick did not keep up with the times in air travel boom times. They had Ryanair set up a base and perhaps with GLA not so far away put airlines operateing out of Prestwick.

Shannon was a big player alongside Prestwick back in the day when Transatlantic flights needed a fuel stop and like Prestwick, Shannon has suffered equally as bad as aircraft became more efficient.

Shannon was in a little better position as they never had GLA near.Shannon has faired a lot better than Prestwick with more pax flights and they seem to do a fair bit of refuel work. Gander and Bangor Maine has suffered as well. But those 2 airports im not sure what other flights operate into them.

Does anybody know if there ever was a direct connection between London Luton and Gasgow Prestwick? I remember that back in 2011 I flew from Luton to either Prestwick or Glasgow international, cant remember which one of the two. I guess it was with Easyjet, Wizzair or Ryanair.

Thanks a lot for the quick answer! Did those 3 air companies at at that time only use Prestwick or did they have a Gasgow airport hub at the same time?

I've put some feelers out with my contacts for more information.

As I recall Wizz has never operated a UK domestic route. easyJet operates(ed) originally from Luton and then split their base with Stansted. Ryanair were, from memory, back in those days a Prestwick airline and only moved across to Abbotsinch fairly recently - may be the last 8 years.

So I may have been a little quick with my first answer, but I'll try to get a better consensus of views before I reply further.

Following on from my reply of last night, I have just been looking at the CAA statistics for Luton.

As you haven't said when in the year you travelled I have taken February, June and November - thus covering the 3 seasonal operating periods. In all of these months no passengers are recorded as flying to Prestwick, only to Abbotsinch (Glasgow International). I did, out of interest also look at the Stansted routes and note that Ryanair pulled off the Stansted/Prestwick route from the start of the Winter 2011/2012 season.

This therefore leave you with the choice of either easyJet or Ryanair - I excluded Wizzair in my reply last night. In February the passengers from Luton were 21,106, in June 24,587 and finally in November 24,008. The fact that there is minimal difference over these months I suspect that the Luton route is/was only operated by easyJet.

Going way back there was an airline which flew Stansted Prestwick New York called Highland Express with a 747. I was a travel agent at the time and they have very low fares , you could buy and i sold a ticket from London to Prestwick on them. Must have been the only domestic 747 service you could book on. This service was in the mid 80s, unfortunately the airline didnt last too long.

Actually Im doing like a world map for my room in which i pin each airport that i used for any flights, the question if it was Prestwick or Glasgow stopped me from finishing it and kept me quite sleepless. 😛
