[textarea]Air Berlin switch from Stansted to Gatwick
Air Berlin, Europe’s sixth largest carrier, is to move its London flights to Nuremberg and Hanover from Stansted to Gatwick early next year. The budget airline currently offers direct flights from Stansted to Dusseldorf, Hanover, Munster, Nuremberg and Paderborn, but from February 7 next year the routes to Hanover and Nuremberg will be switched to Gatwick.
Air Berlin will be based at the North Terminal, also used by fellow Oneworld member British Airways, so it will likely be able to make use of BA's ground handling systems at the terminal. The number of flights offered on the routes will not change, with twice daily flights to Hanover (once daily on Saturday), and twice daily weekday flights to Nuremberg (plus a Sunday service).
A spokesman for Gatwick Airport said that the Air Berlin services are expected to increase passenger volumes at the airport by 365,000 next year. It will be the only London airport to offer passengers direct flights to Nuremberg.
Stewart Wingate, Gatwick Airport’s Chief Executive said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to welcome Air Berlin to Gatwick and offer our passengers new routes into two of Germany’s great cities.'
