Flybe to end Exeter-Leeds Bradford flights

Posted Monday, 24 September, 2012 - 15:52 by Mark Caswell

Flybe is to stop flying between its Exeter base and Leeds Bradford airport from this coming weekend.

The carrier currently operates four times-weekly flights using Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft, but its online reservations system shows no availability after Sunday, September 30.

It is understood the route had been underperforming since the expansion of Flybe services between Exeter and Manchester, and the cancellation of onward services from Leeds to Aberdeen.

Flybe has also previously operated flights between Gatwick and Leeds, but these services were dropped last year.

British Airways is set to launch flights between Heathrow and Leeds Bradford from December 6, as part of its integration of Bmi’s slots into its Heathrow operations.

Shame to see FlyBe contracting once again at LBA. So much potential if they put their minds to it.

The writing has been on the wall for the Exeter service since they stopped daily operations in my very humble opinion. Do you use a regular hourly train service or an erratic 5 times a week flight?? I know which one I would go for, and it wouldn't be the rubber band!!

I see that Belfast City and Southampton are now on sale through to July 2013.

Flybe must be going alright aginst Jet2 as they are adding a 4th daily Leeds/Bradford - Belfast City weekday service as from April 5th. Initially the extra 4th daily flight will only operate on Monday and Fridays, But as from May 10th flights on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday will also be added.

BEE735 = BHD 11:20 LBA 12:25 / BEE736 = LBA 12:50 BHD 13:55

Flybe must be doing something right after announceing the 4th daily weekday service they have now also added a 3rd Sunday flight operating between Belfast City - Leeds/Bradford for the summer schedule starting from Sunday, May 19th

BE735 = BHD 15:10 LBA 16:15 / BE736 = LBA 16:40 – BHD 17:45

Flybe have today started to release Winter 2013/14 flights with Belfast City & Southampton now on sale. The good news is that the Belfast City flights remain 4x daily Monday to Friday while the new 3rd Sunday flight also remains. Southampton remains the same at 3x daily while flights to Glasgow have not been released as yet. They normally get sorted out at a later date with the rest of the Loganair Franchise services.

Here is the daily schedule so far.

Flybe's website is showing some new destinations for this Summer? not sure if these have been mentioned but the destinations from Leeds showing on the website that I don't think were there last time I was on the site:
Alicante
Amsterdam
Barra
Bordeaux
Brest Brittany
Dusseldorf
Faro
Guernsey
Jersey
Kirkwall
La Rochelle
Limoges
Malaga
Nantes
Paris CDG
Renes
Shannon
Stornoway
Sumburgh
Tiree

I looked at a couple of them and they seem to be starting in the summer, I don't recall these been mentioned before, are these new routes? :dunno: (forgive me if these routes have been mentioned before, but they are news to me)

edit: I've looked at barra and it appears to only be operating for a couple of weeks, maybe a charter for something?

Sorry to disappoint AshleyD but these are not new or direct routes.

These are destinations to which through connections can be made by flying with flybe.com from Leeds/Bradford either via Belfast City, Glasgow or Southampton.

ah ok, my bad :s_sorry ...I just had another look and noticed the little '1 stop' by the flights...dissapointing, I thought for a bit that we had some nice new destinations :fool:

I wish they would do Paris. A route crying out for a regular business friendly service.

Thinking of taking a holiday this summer to Austria and was considering Inghams with their charter flight to Innsbruck from LBA. Anyone any idea what type of aircraft Flybe intend to use on this service?

Dash 8 Q400

I don't no if anyone else has noticed this but the q400 taxis out on one engine and starts the second up just before getting onto the runway I have seen this a few times over the last few days

It's their new procedure to save the environment. They started shutting down one engine while taxying after landing ages ago but the taxying out on one engine started about 2 weeks ago.

I could have sworn that flybe were due to increase the Leeds/Bradford - Belfast City route to 4x times daily Dash 8-Q400 service commencing from today and has been on sale for a fair few months?
But it seems like LBIA are getting really good at spinning news stories, as the following press released has just been issued on the airports website regarding the announcement that Jet2 are dropping the Leeds/Bradford - Belfast Int'l route.

Flybe comes to Rescue of Belfast-Bound Travellers

14 MAY 2013

Leading regional airline adds convenient midday service from Leeds Bradford to Belfast City to ensure NI travellers are not left ‘high and dry’

Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, has come quickly to the rescue of those Northern Ireland-bound passengers potentially stranded by today’s announcement of Jet 2’s withdrawal of services between Leeds Bradford Airport and Belfast International Airport by increasing its weekday frequency to Belfast City airport from three to four flights a day with immediate effect. The new middle-of-the-day service departs Leeds Bradford at 1250 and arrives in Belfast at 1335, providing a total choice of up to 24 return flights per week between the two destinations.

Even though one-way fares are from as low as £19.99 including taxes and charges, this weekend customers can take additional advantage of Flybe’s 20% off fare sale for flights booked between Friday 17th May and Tuesday 21st May for travel from 1st July to 14th December 2013.

Flybe UK Managing Director, Andrew Strong says: “Flybe has been providing flights from Leeds Bradford to Belfast City airport for over 21 years. It is an important business and leisure route for our passengers and we are delighted to demonstrate our ongoing commitment by stepping in to provide a fourth daily flight to the Northern Ireland airport that is conveniently located just 10 minutes from the heart of city. We want to ensure travellers continue to have the best possible choice of affordable flights to and from both destinations.”

Tony Hallwood, Leeds Bradford Airport’s Marketing Director, adds: “We are delighted that Flybe has increased its Leeds Bradford to Belfast frequency from three to four times a day, with a convenient schedule for both business and leisure travellers. Belfast City Airport is centrally placed and is ideal for those wishing to explore the vibrant culture and restaurants or experience the fantastic new visitor attraction, Titanic Belfast which is attracting world class recognition. Further afield, the beautiful coastal drive to the Giant’s Causeway makes it a perfect destination for a weekend break.”

You have got to love the ingenuity of putting a positive spin on a bad news story.

Awesome :drinks:

What's going on with FlyBe today? We have both Belfast and Southampton flights showing as canceleld today.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
