Yep Aviator it was.

The replica monoplane was indeed a copy of the Bleriots aircraft that crossed the Channel built by Humber and as far as I know resides at the Coventry Air Museum

I recently found this article on the history of the Eurohub and was staggered at the number of innovations that went into the building at the time of its construction!

- the world’s first purpose-built hub terminal
- “the first terminal in the world to integrate domestic and international arrivals.”
- one of the first terminals, if not the first, to have a centrally controlled door system that could set individual gates up for either arriving or departing passengers

I was recently re-reading everyone’s comments on their earliest spotting memories and i thought I’d recount my own. I probably have one of the shortest memories of anyone on here though!

The Aviation Experience was the only place I went spotting as a child (in the 2000s). I mostly demanded to go on my birthday…which happens to be around the quietest time of the winter! Alas, neither of my parents were aviation enthusiasts and they had no knowledge of such things.

Fortunately I don’t think I was ever bored. I remember having to squint a lot as the sun was low in the sky at that time of year! I was afraid I might miss something if I walked away from the windows. I had no idea of how to keep track of what was going to arrive next, or when. I remember being surprised on one trip by another child who was somehow able to correctly predict what the next arrival would be :)

While waiting for the “large” planes (usually just 757s) I remember really appreciating the great variety of shapes and sizes of regional airliners that we had. Looking back on it now I think I was fortunate to see them while they were still relatively common. BAE 146s, Jetstreams, F70/100s, as well the odd Saab or F50. As well as the Embraers, CRJs and Dash 8s of course.

I don’t think my younger self would have been bored by all the A320s/737s we have now, but a big part of the enjoyment was being able to recognise an aircraft type from its shape. Back then I couldn’t tell the difference between an A320 and a 757, let alone a 737.

(Hopefully the growing number of companies trying to make eco-friendly regional airliners will result in some new and interesting designs to inspire future generations of aviation enthusiasts!…)

I had several aviation related books and a spotters guide but they were either out of date or featured a lot of historical airlines. On one occasion, I saw a Flybe BAE-146 that was still in the all-yellow livery of Buzz. At the time I didn’t know which airlines flew where in the world, and I thought it could have been a ”flying banana” from the (long defunct) American airline, Hughes Airwest!

I was very lucky, in that my Dad and my Uncle had been keen trainspotters when they were young. I believe that they frequently went to Rugeley, to follow their hobby (this was back in the day when trains were real trains and hauled by gorgeous steam locomotives).
He saw my interest in aeroplanes at a young age. At around 5 years old, I would run out of the house to see any plane going over - not many went North from BHX back in those days, just to Ireland and Scotland. Fairly regularly, after Sunday lunch my Dad would tell my Mom 'I'm going to take Kev to the airport for a couple of hours'. There wasn't that much to see, Maybe a few BEA Viscounts and One-Elevens, Britannia B737-200's and maybe a Dan-Air Comet and Aer Lingus One-Eleven. But, it was heaven to me. Occasionally, we would go to MAN rather than BHX and I can remember on a couple of occasions going to LTN to see the Courtline Tristars.
A few years later, when aged around 10, myself and my cousin made our own way to BHX for the first time. My Dad came to pick us up in the evening and presented us each with a copy of Civil Aircraft Markings 1974 (He'd bought them at the little shop in the old Elmdon terminal, which was just outside the cafe/lounge at BHX. I really didn't understand what the book was about, until my Dad showed me the registration on a plane and then looked it up in the book. He explained how to underline and date the entries in the book and so a lifelong love of aviation grew. I no longer record the registrations (other than aircraft that I fly on), as I much prefer photography.
It's still a great hobby, and yes I do still look out at any aircraft flying over.

I don't have a subscription either. I searched "Lee Cross Eurohub" in Google, Lee Cross is the author.

I was shown a bunch of images and links, I clicked on the link below the first and it took me there. I couldn't tell you why it worked but it did, you might also need to experiment a bit with whether to accept cookies from the sites.

There are some great picks of various aircraft in the BA "Landor" livery, including one of the contraversial tails without the union flag.

It's very unusual to read the words "Less than two years after construction began, the £60m state-of-the-art Eurohub opened its doors on July 22, 1991 ahead of schedule and under budget." Well done to the people who achieved this.

Later on the article goes on to discuss the "one terminal" project instigated by Paul Kehoe.

As someone who was travelling out of the Eurohub terminal with Flybe often several weeks at a time on business I hated this change and still do.

It used to be so much easier easier and quicker using Eurohub security lane than the main security. I think this was one of the big advantages the airport gave to the business traveller, carrying the minimum amount of stuff, who knows the security rules.

Aside from the inconveniences of waiting behind ladies with big bags full of makeup etc.. I still actually dislike being routed through the duty free area only to have to turn around and walk back past security again to get to the Eurohub.

I think it is a shame that a lot of though went into the design of Eurohub to build a pioneering self contained mini-terminal that allowed really fast turnarounds only for it ultimately end up as a slightly less convenient satellite of Terminal 1. I also see the once packed retail outlets and pub in there quite empty when I go through there now, whilst the main terminal is really very crowded. I'm still not convinced it is an improvement.

Can’t believe it’s been over 40 years since bhx came official
I remember it well, including the BBC broadcast. I regularly used the MAGLEV across to the NEC. Also, I loved flying on the One-Elevens, but also flew on Netherlines Saab 340, NLM F-28 and Emirates A330 form/to BHX. I loved the spotters lounge and spent far too much of my time in there. Such a shame that it's gone, but it's popularity declined when the terminal was extended in front of it, limiting the views of the parked aircraft. I also flew from/to the old terminal, on Britannia B737-200s. and BA Viscounts.

We used to live in Hodge Hill so had a great view of planes landing and taking off. This obviously sparked off my interest in aviation.

At Elmdon, the sound of a Vanguard starting up was always special, as was the air-compressor startup of a BAC 1-11.

My first flight was from the old terminal on a BEA Viscount to Guernsey with the "red box on the tail" livery.
I was so chuffed to return on a Viscount with the newer livery.

Since then, I flew on Britannia 737's, a Monarch 720B, a British Midland 707 and a good old BA 1-11 (there's a story to tell about the arrival at Reus) from the old terminal. I used to love the smell of spent kerosene, especially as you walked across the tarmac.

A neighbour was plane mad and even hosted his daughter's wedding at the reception suite on the first/second floor. - the old terminal would be excellent as a hotel if there were a market for it.

I have many happy memories of going up to the old terminal for the day in the school holidays awaiting the next arrival, three hours away (which would inevitably be AVYE - a BA Trident which did the Paris rotation about 5 times a day). If there were no flights, we would watch the TV's in the interim area between Gate 5 & the main terminal.

Mom & Dad must have hated Sunday mornings when my brother & I wanted to go to see the Spantax Coronado take off, leaving it's trail of crap everywhere behind it.

We spend hours & hours on "the spirals", in the terminal (collecting baggage tags) and in the lounge over Gate 5. If anyone amongst us was stupid enough to put 10p in the photo booth, everyone piled in. :)

The new terminal never seemed to hold the same magic, or perhaps you call that growing up.

Happy Days

Great memories. Thanks all for sharing, in particular to elmdon74 for link to your Flickr stock of photos.

One question: what was an Air Arubu flight doing at BHX? Diversion I assume.

Just reminds us all of the wonderful journey BJX has been on and the occasional exotic visitors we have had.

I also rember watching Midlands Today on 4 April 84. I was at uni in Bristol but I could faintly pick up the Midlands broadcast on a old black and white portable!

Tha Air Aruba was a Britannia 767 which had just come back from a Winter lease and hadn't been repainted. Regards,Simon.

Feels odd putting something from 2014 in the nostalgia section but 10 years ago today saw the opening of the runway extension.

Wow!. That 10 years has gone so quickly!.
Nice to see Monarch and Flybe on those pics. Sadly missed Airlines, and big supporters of BHX. At least Jet2, EasyJet and Ryanair have stepped up their presence since.
Ironic that Privilege are featuring currently on some KLM rotations.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
