Nostalgia at BHX

Yeah different sound from the Tyne compared to the whine of the Viscount's Darts I could hear the Viscount starting up at home and sometime flying low over our house when using 06/24 as a kid.

Could walk to the airport through Elmdon park back then.

My only flight in a Vanguard was in 1971 with BEA - G-APED from Gerona to BHX operating a a sub charter for the ailing Channel Airways, replacing a sick Comet. I remember walking across the ramp at GRO and being disappointed that we were not travelling home on a jet. I was young and foolish then and obviously now I cherish this experience. Shame the opportunity to travel again on a Vanguard never arose. Loved the sound of those Tynes.

yes was 2004 Rich, some classic airlines in that list, RE - Arr Arann, VZ - My Travel Lite, HV - Transavia, AZ - Alitalia, W5 - Mahan Air, don't think we will see Tehran again on our arrivals board!

As usual elmdon74 thanks for posting. As someone who started ‘spotting’ 60 years ago those registrations are not just letters on a page they are actual vivid memories of seeing them. Today’s aircraft may be technologically advanced, efficient and quiet, but I miss the sight, sound and smell of a piston prop. struggling into life.

The smell of delicious kerosene...you are 100% right. Every night at some silly hour a turboprop what not goes over our house in Essex from Katsruhle in Germany to Dublin. It is the only daily aircraft I here.

Having said that the Red Arrows in three groups of three from Soufend to Headcorn grabbed my attention on Sunday.

I think we all must have been there. Those days were so wonderful. Eating a bag of cheese and onion golden wonders, face pressed to the glass, and the smell of turbo props. Remember when airports used to let you in to watch the airport in action? To be fair when the 'new' terminal opened in 1984 there was a spotters gallery with a very useful shop and cafe.

I used to collect the postcards of planes. All lost now...long story, involving parents clearing out my stuff, putting it in a bag, me a leaving in on my porch in Billericay, and bin men. I had the entire Blues team of 1973/74 including Trev in my autograph book....lost to Pitsea tip.

Trev tribute match and statue unveiled today. Legend and thanks Forest for sharing him and the day.

BMA`s new LHR service began on 1/11 with Herald G-BAVX,which has operated daily since,with the exception of 27/11 when it was u/s in Newquay and Viscount G-AZLP helped out.The BA reorganisation continues with the Cambrian,Northeast,Channel and Scottish titles being dropped,and everything coming under the Regional division.7 1-11-400`s and 14 Viscount 806`s will be based at Elmdon,with maintainance at CWL.Tridents G-ARPK and G-AZXM have been around this month as well.G-BBME 1-11 had an engine failure on take off from Orly on 20/11.
Latest Viscounts to appear on BHX flight have been G-AOYG and G-AOYR.G-AOHH last flew on 20/11 to LBA where it will be used as a fire trainer.
