Re: Humberside Airport - Thread

These are precisely the sort of argument used in support of opening ( and then re-opening) SCA...Sadly, in South Yorkshire, all the authorities can see are 737's full of happy holidaymakers!

Re: Humberside Airport - Thread

Good news as Jetxtra have just confirmed summer 2014 flights to Palma and Alicante for next summer from Humberside this morning. The weekly flights will switch from operating on Tuesdays to Saturdays instead..
Jetxtra have also announced a new short 3 week programme of flights operating to Tenerife from Humberside over the 2013/14 Christmas and New Year period.

[textarea]Passenger lands plane at Humberside Airport after pilot falls ill

Flying instructor Roy Murray describing what he said to the passenger

A passenger has landed an aeroplane at Humberside Airport after the pilot fell ill at the controls.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the airport after the pilot collapsed and a distress call was made from the aircraft.

Two flying instructors were called in to advise the passenger how to bring the plane down.

One of them, Roy Murray, said the passenger had no flying experience and did a "remarkable job".

[textarea]Moment of passenger's emergency landing at Humberside airport

Footage has emerged of the moment a passenger was forced to land a light aircraft after his pilot fell ill at the controls.

John Wildey - who had never flown a plane before - landed the aircraft at Humberside Airport last week, under the guidance of instructors called in by air traffic controllers.

A camera mounted on an RAF helicopter, which had been called in to assist, filmed the plane as it attempted to land.

Re: Humberside Airport - Thread

The SAS S14 schedule for HUY has gone on sale. This could be positive move as I believe they were monitoring sales prior to committing to the summer flights. Positive is that there will be an extra flight every Tuesday. Negative is that there will initially be seasonal suspensions in Easter June and July. Still, good to see that there will be 6 weekly flights, and it is hoped they will go double daily on some days if it becomes established.

I hear there may be positive news regarding KLM soon too.

Just need to sort out the leisure network now as its looking pretty dire for S14 as things stand.

[textarea]SAS to start Humberside-Copenhagen service

Copenhagen is to be served from Humberside airport from this winter with a new SAS service.

The airline is to use a 50-seat CRJ200 regional jet on the route with five flights a week.

The year-round services starts on October 28 with fares leading in at £103 one-way including taxes and charges.

Flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays will depart from Humberside at 7.15pm, arriving in Copenhagen at 9.50pm local time. Weekday flights from Copenhagen take off at 6.10pm local time, arriving in Humberside at 6.45pm.

Sunday services leave from Humberside at 2.55pm and from the Danish capital at 1.50pm local time.

The announcement comes just over a year since the ownership of Humberside airport changed hands from Manchester Airports Group to the Eastern Group, which also owns regional carrier Eastern Airways.

The airport also offers year-round services to Amsterdam with KLM and Aberdeen with Eastern Airways.

SAS regional manager western Europe Hans Dyhrfort said: “This is a major milestone for SAS, as we will start providing the only non-stop, direct service to Scandinavia from the Humber, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire region.

“With the area on its way to becoming the renewable energy capital of the UK, the Humber region is an important northern hub and area of development for SAS.”

The airport’s commercial director Paul Litten said: “This latest development from Humberside demonstrates both our commitment along with SAS’s to support the business community with a valuable air link that enhances the region’s transport connections and helps businesses to further grow and prosper.

“With over two million people within an hour’s drive of the airport, the Humberside–Copenhagen service will benefit tourists and leisure travellers heading to the Scandinavian and Baltic countries and also visiting our region.”

Re: Humberside Airport - Thread

Yes it's a major coup for Humberside airport. SAS could just have easily opted to use DSA or LBA so fair play to Humberside airport for securing this route!

Re: Humberside Airport (HUY) - Thread

It looks like Thomson are planning a return to HUY for S14 with Palma and Ibiza appearing in their latest brochure. An interesting development of it happens..

Re: Humberside Airport (HUY) - Thread

Could these be the 'W' flights that were operating into Teeside? I know it has been posted that they are going to Newcastle but this would be a better use as Newcastle already has multiple flights to these destinations.

Re: Humberside Airport (HUY) - Thread

The new owners of Humberside airport seem to be making good progress in gaining new flights and services. It just goes to show the Manchester Airport Group were not really interested in expanding the airport to it's full potential. The ability of the airport managers to get SAS on-board will not have gone unnoticed by other airlines.

Re: Humberside Airport (HUY) - Thread

I think this is more about local knowledge and a more pragmatic approach. Though it must be said that nothing is on sale yet, it may be announced prior to the HAT open day in January.

Hard to tell how SAS are doing, their load factors for November were 25%, so presumably they will need to improve quite significantly.

[textarea]British Airways brought in to serve summer season from Humberside

BRITAIN'S flag-carrying airline will be a regular arrival and departure from Humberside International Airport this summer.

JetXtra.com has reached a deal with British Airways to operate the flights to Alicante and Majorca.

Launched last year, using airline Volotea, the switch is based on the success of the inaugural season.

This deal will now see a state-of-the-art British Airways Embraer jet operating the weekly flights from Kirmington on JetXtra's behalf, and will be the first time British Airways has been a regular visitor to the airport.

Re: Humberside Airport (HUY) - Thread

It's good to see JetXtra.com finally getting their act together and looking like a more serious outfit. The news British Airways will be making an appearance at the airport is fantastic new for the airport. Is there any chance SAS and BA will be on the ground together at some point?

Re: Humberside Airport (HUY) - Thread

Launched last year, using airline Volotea, the switch is based on the success of the inaugural season.

It is good to see this venture continuing and apparently prospering.

I presume that the BA aircraft are those of CityFlyer because I don't think that BA 'mainline' has any Embraers.

Won't there in fact be a reduction in seating capacity though this year compared with last? Volotea say its B717s have 125 seats whereas the BA CityFlyer E190s apparently seat 98 and the E170s seat 76. It's not made clear in the report which type will be used.

[textarea]Campaign to rename Humberside Airport after incredible inventor John Harrison from Barrow of Humber who helped sailors navigate the world

A campaign has been launched to change the name of Humberside Airport to the John Harrison International Airport. One of the people behind the survey, Telegraph columnist Dr Robert M Jaggs-Fowler, explains how the idea took off...

SHAKESPEARE proclaimed "What's in a name?" However, I doubt that he would have extended the same benign acceptance if he had lived in Northern Lincolnshire and been forced to ponder the aberration that is "Humberside".

Forced upon the residents of parts of Lincolnshire and Yorkshire in 1974, the name Humberside evoked instant resistance and a campaign for the county's abolition from the moment of its birth. That release came in 1996, when it was replaced by four unitary authorities.

Re: Humberside Airport (HUY) - Thread

There's no wonder Scunthorpe has such a bad name for itself. It seems to be full of small minded backwater folk who are still fighting against the very thing that was imposed to change the fortunes of the area. Commercially, the airport have absolutely no incentive to change the name, and if they did it would include Hull (naturally, being the largest conurbation the airport serves) much to the behest Of the small minded bigots I'm sure.

As for jetXtra, still not convinced they'll be around for the long term. They can't even be making beer money from this venture. Nice to see Cityflyer will be more regular visitors however, though not alongside SAS as they won't be operating on Saturdays when these flights are scheduled.

Re: Humberside Airport (HUY) - Thread

Does using the name Humberside really have any commercial significance? Does it really matter whether the airport is associated with Humberside or Hull? As a bystander in the matter, personally I would be more inclined to associate the airport with Hull as the major nearby conurbation rather than with Lincolnshire for the sake of a county.

As for naming the airport "John Harrison International Airport", I've never heard of him.

Re: Humberside Airport (HUY) - Thread

People in this area know where Humberside Airport is! It is silly to change the name of the airport on cost grounds alone, least all the other possible names that could be put forward.
