And yet Southend Airport has been having problems for months with temporary closure over the winter months and now being put up for sale by the current owners. Not looking good for the long term future though easyJet have started some operations again for summer 2023.

I expect their main reasoning for boltholing at Humberside is the proximity of their office and ops function at Finningley. Should they plan to vacate Finningley then I would expect they’d look to consolidate in one location - aside from Lasham and Sywell of course.
Thats very disappointing. I was hoping this summers bookings would prove the demand was there and we would see lots more flights. Presumably neither Tui, Ryanair nor Balkan have seen sufficient passengers, despite reports of full flights.
Don't forget, that airlines don't have spare aircraft and crews sitting around waiting to be put onto routes. Low cost airlines need to get high utilisation from their aircraft and in order to open new routes, it may mean pulling aircraft off other routes. It then comes down to which routes generate the most yield.
At the moment next summer isn't fully finalised yet.
