There's got to be something more behind the scenes. Was the deal not sweet enough for BHX to accept from Ryanair? Where Ryanair not happy with the counter offer from BHX?

As for easyJet i don't see why they cannot be attracted to operate a few more routes; GVA, MXP, SXF/TXL, AMS, PARIS, BCN - all European bases which could operate into BHX throughout the quieter period of the day.

What: we turned down Ryanair and all that lost stags and hens traffic? I am with the management on that one. We can do better.

Sorry but i disagree, BHX needs to expand in every way it can, being picky and choosy over what traffic it wants when being squeezed by so many other airports is a ridiculous business model, they’ll run the airport out of business completely

Hi there Gliderpilot, I agree with what you are saying, bhx management have been asleep for many years now, sitting on the fence and not making those gutcey decisions that will bring in the investment and business that they need, watching other airports like Manchester flourish and to expand with 25 million passengers or more passing through, doing deals with airlines that has kept them for many years. Where now Birmingham under kehoe only achieved short term deals in the time he was there, that only lasted just 12 months plus, then they left, UA, AA, Iceland Air, briefly BA, So at present no direct links or flights to the United States of America, no direct flights to Australia, only flights via dubai, then a connecting flight for onward destinations, then got a runaway extension done years after it should have been completed, which Birmingham missed out on the London 2012 Olympics by miles. So I honestly don't know where Birmingham airport is going to achieve its masterplan from... Andyc

Hi there all from my previous post, Birmingham Airport retracted by losing 500,000 plus passengers last year, I wonder why, oh yes I forgot about monarch Airlines disappearing altogether, so where is Birmingham now going to re coup that loss of 500,000 passengers from last year from, honestly I don't know at all, but I wonder, does anyone know this answer at all.. Andyc

Andy Jet2s increased program this year just about covers the Monarch short fall so the bucket and spade business only suffered a one year drop in reality, the future in that business is looking a bit fragile at present with all the political stuff goings on. Its the other type of destinations that BHX is falling way short on see Rays list in an earlier post.

No thank you, EasyJet can do one in my view unless they change their approach.

I’d much rather work with airlines that are happy to invest in BHX to encourage them to invest further into the airport. There are still great opportunities at BHX from Jet2.com, Ryanair and Flybe (assuming the laters current situation can be resolved)...

EasyJet’s approach to BHX, requesting the airport pays them £20 per pax to base aircraft at the airport (i appreciate this was/is a rumour) is ridiculous and offensive if true. Yes BHX stands to gain from new routes but so do airlines. Business should be in the collective interests of all parties, not a ruthless power trip of domination!

I’d much rather make what we have work better for us than bow down to yet another airline to make demeaning demands!

Hi there rollo, yes I have already seen Ray's list of unserved routes from Birmingham Airport and its quite shocking that 17 cities or towns are not served by Birmingham Airport is quite alarming, when you add up the total population for all 17,it comes to a staggering 17 million people, but when you look at potential route growth for all, that's is where the shock hits you, if you 5% or 10% growth on the total population, this figures are quite shocking to see what businesses Birmingham is missing out on or losing.... My friend has an apartment in Valencia, if I want to visit I am forced to route through AMS or go from EMA. My good lady wife wants to visit Seville, if we do decide to go I am forced to route through AMS or go from EMA. The kids want to visit the Acropolis in Athens, if we go I am forced to route through AMS or go from BRS. After enjoying Porto a trip to Lisbon was next on the list, if we go I am forced to route through AMS or go from BRS.

It's just not good enough!

Norwegian and Vueling went as quickly as they came (admittedly not just from BHX), Wizz have stagnated at six routes, Blue Air are now back to just two destinations and despite the claims of making Birmingham as big as STN with 100 routes Ryanair look to treat BHX as an afterthought. Jet2 have worked wonders but their business model will only take BHX so far.

Even when we did have the boom years it was just too many airlines all on the same routes with very few looking to develop new markets. Four airlines to Madrid and Barcelona, seven airlines to the likes of Malaga and Tenerife. Even now we have Wizz joining Jet2 and Ryanair on Krakow and Lauda coming in on Vienna which, load wise, is desperately struggling. I appreciate that airports cannot dictate where airlines fly to but could Wizz not have added Riga, Vilnius, Iasi or Chisinau? Could they not have come in on under served markets such as Gdansk or Katowice?

I'm really struggling to see what the route development strategy is, or if they even have one?

One things for sure is that it doesn't seem to be working and hasn't for a long time.

no direct flights to Australia, only flights via dubai

Sorry to burst you're bubble Andy, but BHX is never going to have a direct non-stop flight to Australia.

Currently the only non-stop flight from Europe to Australia is Qantas' Heathrow to Perth. The only likely additions to this in the future will be Heathrow and Paris to Sydney and maybe Melbourne. Also Turkish has talked about launching Istanbul to Sydney for many years now but still haven't.

EasyJet’s approach to BHX, requesting the airport pays them £20 per pax to base aircraft at the airport (i appreciate this was/is a rumour) is ridiculous and offensive if true. I really can't believe that easyJet (or any airline) would demand an airport pays them to operate flights from said airport. That would suggest the airline has no confidence in the routes from that airport turning a profit. If the only way to make a profit is for the airport to subsidise the route, the airline would almost certainly look to base the aircraft elsewhere where they have confidence they will make a profit rather than demand such a deal.

I know there's been 'rumours' that easyJet said they couldn't get the yields from the Midlands (BHX or EMA) to warrant opening a base, but with a 130 mile gap between Luton and Manchester with no easyJet base, I find that difficult to comprehend when so they could serve so many routes from BHX with absolutely no competition.

I can't see how easyJet flying once or twice weekly to each of the destinations Ray mentioned earlier would decrease yields at their other bases especially considering how close some of their other bases are to each other.

easyjet are quite happy for Midlanders to drive to LTN, STN, BRS, LPL & MAN - why wouldn't they be ?

Opening BHX would only dilute the above.

They had a perfect opportunity when Monarch went bust and I spoke to a BHX contact and was told they are just not interested.

I would gladly buy a hat and eat it if they ever set up a base at BHX.

I think that all those cities and towns that Ray mentioned in an earlier post needs to be addressed by the airport very quick, because that is a huge amount of business that Birmingham airport is missing out on.... Andyc

Because there will also be 100,000s who don't do that who aren't filling Easyjet planes and who aren't putting money in their bank account but putting money into their rivals bank accounts.
To me it is odd as it's like Asda not having any stores in the Midlands and expecting people to drive to other cities for their shopping.
Even Ryanair feels the need for a base at BHX despite already being established at EMA, same with Jet2.

I was just about to say the same Jerry, i don’t see the argument about diluting other bases when others are so close.

easyJet must lose so many potential customers purely due to their disregard to the midlands.

Like for like destinations, (i.e a flight with Flybe from brum and one from manc with easyjet to the same place) I for one would not be willing to spend extra on transport to an airport further away, i’d rather just spend a bit more on the flight, its far less hassle and more convenient. I can understand for long haul flights but for simple city hops people really don’t want to travel that far

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
