Milan & Berlin seem the most obvious candidates. To think that these routes were multiple daily with Flybe and now they are unserved is crazy! BHX has many unserved routes now particularly to Germany, France & Italy and I think easyJet are our best hope as they are more likely to operate the right frequencies.

I've long thought easyJet would do well serving both Milan and Berlin from BHX - although given the current state of BHX (even before Covid) any major city in Europe would be a prime candidate for easyJet!

Very true! Birmingham definitely won't be the only airport trying to attract them but due to Covid the airlines are squeezed financially and easyJet themselves said that they will deploy aircraft wherever they receive low charges & can operate most efficiently. Now when easyJet are ready to rip up the rule book as to where they do and don't fly from, it is the completely right time for BHX to do some discounting.
However we have all seen from experience that BHX don't often do this hence why we lost FI, TS & UA. Maybe the recent airline/route losses will make BHX rethink their strategy to not only attract but retain the routes.

Did the problem begin when Ryanair played hard over fees and said they would not operate out of BHX, then hey presto, they begin services and now all carriers haggle hard for a deal?

That could be a factor, presumably Ryanair got a deal from the airport but what growth has the airport had to show for it from them? I am not a fan of Ryanair and avoid them at all costs. It seems that the same level of discounts or flexibility is not offered to all carriers and this ruffles other airlines feathers. I do know that this was the exact case for Icelandair- they found the airport to be very unaccomodating with charges and that is why they pulled the plug. The same time as Jet2 were announced that was when Vueling wielded the axe and chopped their route network down to just Barcelona so it does raise the question of if there is a level playing field. If there was more flexibility I bet we would see more from other loyal airlines like SAS & Air France too.

Great news seeing NAP back (y)

Milan, Berlin, Lyon and Bordeaux could all be done with away based aircraft as could adding more capacity to Lisbon, Paris and Amsterdam. Not long ago I'd have thought no chance but if they can start Naples then maybe there is hope?

A base must be the ultimate goal though as the destinations now absent need replacing sooner rather than later and easyjet tick all of the boxes.

easyJet plans to reduce its fleet size by 51 aircraft by the end of next year so any major expansion at other airports could only be achieved by significant reductions at existing bases and airports currently served.

From press reports it almost seems that easyJet is inviting sealed bids from prospective airport partners in a come-and-get-us invitation. I don't know how much of that is press talk because a major reorientation of the airline's UK presence would be a huge logistical exercise if undertaken in time for next year.

Perhaps not all BHX followers read other airport forums on F4A but there is optimism that easyJet might also favour LBA, and some CWL posts don't rule out the possibility entirely.

Depends if you take what easyJet said at face value. If true that essentially airports can bid for easyJets business, then of course posters on smaller airport threads will think that "their" airports are in with the chance of getting a base.

Bare in mind that easyJet will expect different from different airports. Whilst a bid at one airport may be successful, the exact same offer from another airport may not be.

I sincerely doubt small airports are anywhere near a chance of attracting any sort of meaningful Easyjet presence.

Geneva going year round, new routes to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Naples along with slot applications for Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin is more activity in the last 18 months or so than we've seen in probably the last decade.

Although I would desperately love to be proven wrong I'm not convinced that we'll see a base in the next year or so but I could see more away based flights to new destinations. Berlin, Milan, Paris and Amsterdam must be immediate priorities and if they work then who knows what may follow.

Easyjet have notified BALPA pilots union that they plan to close their bases at Stansted, Southend and Newcastle with 727 pilots jobs to go. This doesn't bode well for BHX expansion,......or maybe it does!!. We shall see

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
