With Ryanair group now using multiple different liveries, the fleet might start to look a bit of a mess as engine cowlings are swapped around.

There were 60 airline departures today. I've not been checking each day but I think this might be the first time that 60 has been reached since the pandemic effects kicked in early last year. 58 has been the figure on a number of days this month which is the previous highest I have noted since the pandemic began to spin its devastating web.

61 airline departures today. 25 of them are between 0600 and 0900, then nothing util 1245.

It certainly illustrates the peaks and troughs of a regional airport, even in pandemic times.

Indeed, but but the point I was making is that BRS, as it did with the 'noughties' recession, is making important strides in turning things around quicker than many airports but still has these noticeable peaks and troughs mainly I suppose because most of its services are operated by based aircraft. That's not meant to be a criticism, just a statement of how it is.

In the past nine days I've used BRS for the first time in nearly two years, our (my wife and me) first flights from anywhere in that time. We used easyJet to and from Glasgow and both of us were very impressed with how the airport is managing its approach to the pandemic, with the same applying to easyJet.

The experience through BRS was significantly better than that at GLA. I will post a review of the flights and airport performances in the appropriate section of F4A in due course.

The summer season such as it was is coming to an end. Today there were 74 airline departures, and with the winter timetable kicking in very soon the number of daily departures is likely to be reduced. Today was around 70% of the number of daily departures at this time of year pre-pandemic.

Eurowings EW4212 from Prague arrived BRS with 0730 arrival time (seems to have landed over half an hour early) and returned as EW4213 at 0805.

This is the first scheduled Eurowings operation at BRS since 2008-2009 when Eurowings operated from/to Frankfurt for Lufthansa. There are two Prague rotations today with easyJet's departure due at 1715. Seat selector on that currently showing 114 occupied seats (on a 156-seat A319). Two carriers to Prague in winter with the pandemic still flexing its muscles? Hmm.

At 1735 Ryanair FR2798 is due to operate to Riga with the return FR2799 due back at 2350. Ryanair last operated BRS-RIX in 2012.

Today is good in terms of departures given the month and the state of the pandemic, although not every day of the week is as strong as that this month. On Saturday there were just 34 departures, albeit November Saturdays were invariably not strong pre-pandemic. I looked at a Mayfly for November 2017 for example and there were only 43 departures then on the mid-November Saturday.

When the ski season began at BRS pre-pandemic the 90+ departures a week to the snow saw winter Saturdays take a decided turn for the better from mid-December. I'm not sure how this season's ski offering is shaping up.

The important figure of course is the yield that is being generated, something about which we can have no idea. I sometimes do sample seat selector checks with easyJet and Ryanair and, although never definitive, they can give a broad guide. There seems little doubt that routes that weren't faring too well in terms of loads in the earlier part of the summer - sun routes for example - have improved markedly over the past two months or so.

Domestic routes have really rebounded this year. Comparing August 2021 with August 2109 (BRS is one of the few airports where September 2021 CAA figures are still awaited) gives these numbers with August 2019 shown first.

Belfast International: 25,809 - 25,218. It's as good as recovered completely.

Edinburgh: 32,378 - 24,092 which is 75% of 2019 but from fewer flights in 2021

Glasgow: 27,766 - 19,894 which is 70% of 2019 but from fewer flights in 2021

Newcastle: 17,124 - 8,495 which is 50% of 2019 but from fewer flights in 2021

Inverness: 9,459 - 8,059 which is 85% of 2019

Aberdeen: 1,468 - 5,286 which is 350% up on 2019 but easyJet operated the route alongside Loganair in 2021. In fact, Aberdeen carried more passengers in August 2021 than any other Aberdeen route to an English airport outside London.

Isle of Man: 2,955 - 1,872 which is 63% of 2019

Guernsey: 2,608 - 1,603 which is 61% of 2019

Jersey: 3,766 - 5,815 which is 155% up on 2019 but easyJet operated the route alongside Blue Islands in 2021.

I was surprised to note that all commercial traffic seems to have landed this morning. I take it the ILS is back to full operation after the work performed on it in early autumn.

Nevertheless, the wind direction was shown as north-easterly in the general area for much of the morning. Were aircraft using 09 or 27 this morning? If the former presumably the visibility was nothing like as bad as where I live.

Enter Air

Enter Air are back in BRS!
B738 (SP-ENQ) positioned in from Enontekio, Finland (ENF) on Monday 22nd Nov and has been parked all week on the new far-Eastern stands. It departs today for ENF at 10:00 before operating to LGW and then BFS.

Will be interesting to see whether Enter Air will have an aircraft parked in BRS over the winter months like we've seen in previous years where it operates ski-flights and has also offered extra capacity to the likes of TUI.
