Bristol Airport Transformational Public Transport Hub

Bristol Airport has commenced work on its largest capital project ever and is investing over £60m in creating a public transport interchange hub and multi-storey car park.

This transformational project will enhance services and accessibility for customers whether arriving or departing from Bristol Airport. Customers using Bristol Airport will notice preparation and enabling works taking place in front of the terminal and within the Northside Car Park.
The project will provide:
  • Over £60m investment
  • New public transportation interchange hub
  • Additional multi-storey car park
  • Glazed bridge link between car parks and terminal
  • Elevating customer comfort with a new Waiting area and rest facilities
  • Enhanced customer facilities including an enlarged Drop Off and Pick Up area

The investment will provide a significantly enlarged public transport interchange hub, improved internal road system and an additional multi-storey car park providing customer enhancements such as waiting rooms and rest facilities. The project forms part of Bristol Airport’s overall multi-million-pound transformational development plan enabling 12 million passengers a year to use the Airport.

A major public transport interchange hub will be created for coaches, buses and other forms of public transport on the top level of the multi-storey car park. The public transport interchange hub will more than double the number of bus/coach bays to 16 bays (an increase from the current six bays). Enabling the Airport to be one of the region’s largest bus/coach interchanges, and is a major contribution of Bristol Airport’s commitment in improving public transport links across the region.

The top level of the car park will also provide a dedicated Drop Off and Pick-up location for family, friends or taxis and provide a new gateway for all customers and with ease of access to the terminal.

The new multi-storey car park will provide over 2000 spaces; state of the art technology; blue badge parking; and will adjoin the existing multi-storey car park. The terminal will be accessed via a glazed pedestrian bridge link with ease of access for customers - all on the same level. Removing the current pedestrian route of using steps and slopes between the car parks and the terminal, enhancing the customer experience whether arriving or departing from Bristol Airport. The internal road improvements and design will segregate pedestrians and vehicles, making it safer for everyone. - Source: Bristol Airport

I can't believe some of the objections the airport has seen from one of the local anti airport groups who shall not be named here.

The transport hub will allow the airport to develop it's bus and coach connections with more places taking cars off the road. Honestly, these people just complain about everything.

I have a booking for the Long Stay car park on Saturday 7/10.

Yesterday I received an email from the airport entitled "Our airport transformation begins | Your parking options" stating that from 1/11 the Long Stay car park is closed.

Although hopefully we will return well before that date, does anyone who works at/ is a frequent visitor to the airport know what the approach is to the work for the next week or so and which (if any) parts of the Long Stay car park are impacted? TIA. #BRSparking #BristolAirportQuestion #BristolAirport

The construction site for this is massive, basically engulfing most of the remaining surface car parking north of the terminal if I saw that right. Unfortunately I wasn't quick enough to snap some pics earlier when passing it on the A1 bus, and I guess there isn't much to see yet anyway besides lots of mud and the start of some new ramps.

The CGI images look impressive. If you get a chance at all it would be great to see some pictures showing the works progression.

There's a fly-through video here as well:

Which confirms my suspicions about the canopy for the bus gates: it doesn't extend far enough to allow you to board/disembark without getting soaked in the rain. Who designs this stuff? Clearly people who don't use public transport themselves. Would it really have been so difficult to raise the canopy a little and extend it a bit forward so that it can cover the front of a double-decker bus?! Mind-boggling.

It's not the end of the world @tpm People used to complain about the walk across a windswept apron and now passengers are privileged to walk along an indoor walkway. People now complain about having long walks.

At the larger airports like Manchester where there's a multi storey car park, you get the car fumes underneath the canopy so you could say every cloud has a silver lining.

I drove past the site today and work is in progress. Hugh piles of earth and rubble with groundworks still taking place, plenty of machinery working with drainage and other services appearing to be laid. All this is behind fashionably grey fencing, only able to see progress from the road through gateways or on a double decker bus.

I can’t remember the hoped for completion date but seems unlikely to be completed before the summer season starts

From Thursday 14 March 2024:

View from eastern end of the terminal airside where the access to the terrace is.

The piles of earth on the right are probably the height of a six storey building or so when approaching from the A38, so quite a lot going on there.

Thanks for the picture and update @tpm its much appreciated.

The short-stay car park has been ripped up for the new public transport interchange according to eyewitnesses. The short-stay, which used to be located in front of the terminal building, has moved to the back of the pre-existing multi-storey car park.

"according to eyewitnesses" - top local journalism at work 🤣

Took another pic from the same spot as the last one when I passed through the airport this morning. Not much has changed in the area covered by my 18 March pics, although some of the earthworks looks more final now (some flat areas where there used to be big mountains).

However, big changes were visible elsewhere closer to the existing MSCP structures. I didn't get a good picture of it as I was already inside the terminal, but if you look closely you can see either foundations/piling being done and/or structures rising already. I will try to get a better picture when I come back.

There are two large cranes busy in that spot as well.

I passed through last Friday having returned from Venice and was very impressed with the size of the development. I also noticed the parts of the terminal that look to be marked as the expansion talked about. Quite a size increase - should be good.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?
