Flights frequency plea by Birmingham Airport boss

Airlines are to be encouraged to increase the frequency of flights from Birmingham Airport to major destinations like Orlando, Belfast and the Caribbean.

Its chief executive Paul Kehoe has told the Express & Star that 2013 will be a year to show what the airport is capable of as work takes place on a £65 million scheme to extend the runway and an aircraft maintenance hub is being built by airline Monarch’s engineering company, creating 300 jobs.

Mr Kehoe has been trying to convince the Government that its solution to congestion at London’s Heathrow Airport lies in using Birmingham and other regional airports as “hubs” and persuading more operators to base themselves outside of the capital.

But he has said that the key to increasing usage of Birmingham, and to creating more jobs, will lie with the success of the wider West Midlands.

“I’m hoping to see another long-haul route in 2013,” Mr Kehoe said.

“Qatar Airways have said they want to serve Birmingham but haven’t said when. I’m also hopeful of seeing more flights to European cities. Madrid is high on our wish list, as are Prague, Budapest, Toulouse and Lyon.”

The airport is also working to get a flight to Amritsar in India to serve the large Asian population in the West Midlands but a link would depend on the fortunes of Air India.

Mr Kehoe said: “We’ve got people going to see Air India next year but they need financial support from their government, and Air India will also not want to dilute their business at Heathrow.

“We’re promoting the runway extension but it is also very much about selling the economy of the West Midlands.

“Airlines want to see a growing economy so they know they have the business travellers. By the end of 2013 we need to make it clear that Birmingham has a role to play in the national infrastructure and that we are a vital part of it.

“We’re talking to different airlines who already use us.

“We have one flight a week to Orlando in Florida. Other airports have four or five.

“We go to Montego Bay in the Caribbean once a week in the summer and Toronto in Canada once a week. We could handle more flights to Belfast. The challenge in 2013 is to do more with what we have.”

The link below from the Air Transport Research Society compares airport landing charges throughout the world for 767 & A320. It's from 2010 but interesting stuff.

Landing Charges: Basis for computing
•Assumptions:
–(Use of signatory airlines)
–Passenger aircraft
–Peak and off-peak charges separately treated
–International flights
–Some airports have summer/winter rates –these are averaged
–Assumed 2 hours aircraft parking
•Exclusion: Tax, Noise charges, lighting surcharge

Landing Charges for Boeing 767-400, 2010 (in US$) Page 32.

In the European category BHX is the fifth most expensive in Europe with the fee being just over $3000. For comparison LGW (peak) just over $2000, MAN around $1500 with EDI and LHR slightly less. The mean figure is about $1800.

Europe: Landing Charge for Airbus 320, 2010 (in US$) Page 34.

BHX is 9th in Europe costing $1100 with only LGW from the UK (peak) higher $1900. MAN (peak) is $700, with LGW and MAN (off peak) around the $600 mark.

Combined Landing and Passenger Charges
Given that it is difficult to separate landing and passenger charges for some airports, the combined landing and passenger charged may reflect a better picture.

Europe: Combined Landing and Passenger Charge for Airbus 320, 2010 (in US$) Page 39.

LHR is way out in front here with LGW (peak) being next. From the rest of the UK surprise surprise BHX is the most expensive at just under $3000. EDI is about $2400 with MAN varying from $1200-1400ish.

http://www.atrsworld.org/docs/Key%20Fin ... ly2011.pdf

Although there are many variables it's easy to see why lack of yields is often the reason sited for stopping/reducing/not starting BHX (US Airways and Easyjet to name two recent examples). MAN is roughly HALF the price of BHX!

Good news about the profit it's just a real shame it comes at a cost of people losing their jobs.

Profits soar 51% at Birmingham Airport after a year of cutbacks

Birmingham Airport has increased directors’ pay and paid dividends of close to £10 million after a profit rise on the back of cost-cutting.

Accounts – which reveal the first rise in passengers since the onset of the credit crunch – show after-tax profits at Birmingham Airport Holdings rose 51.1 per cent last year, to £8 million, despite revenue rising by less than one per cent.

The improvement in profitability came after administrative expenses fell by £4.6 million following an efficiency drive that saw the wage bill cut by more than four per cent and 29 fewer workers employed.

However, chief executive Paul Kehoe saw his pay packet increase by £49,000, to a total of £408,000, and the balance sheet reveals £9.9 million worth of dividends given to shareholders in the 12 months to March 31, 2012.

The airport recently concluded a long-running pay dispute with staff after agreeing a pay increase of 2.5 per cent, plus a one-off pro rata payment of £150, which represents the first rise in four years.

The wage bill was cut from £20.8 million in 2011 to £19.9 million last year, as the total number of employees dipped from 566 to 537. Running costs were also cut by 2.9 per cent, to £39.8 million.

However, Mr Kehoe, who took over as chief executive in 2008, saw his pay packet rise from £359,000 to £408,000 after a long-term incentive plan was added and a £100,000 bonus was paid.

An airport spokesperson said, “The airport has made changes to its structure whilst investing in its infrastructure to steer the company in the right direction for long-term growth opportunities that will ultimately support the region’s economy.

“Changes, such as the recent terminal merger which has created a more efficient operation, have helped reduce operating costs to allow the company to invest in its infrastructure even further and attract more people into the region.

"Employees benefited from a bonus during the year but staffing costs overall reduced due to restructuring which led to there being fewer employees; a recent pay award of three per cent has been agreed, backdated to April 1, 2012.

“The CEO, who is the highest paid director, has a contract which includes a long-term incentive plan triggered in the 2011/12 financial year; this was agreed before he joined the company.

"The CEO has not had a pay rise for four years and in fact his bonus and benefits reduced in 2011/2012.”

The airport’s balance sheet also shows a dividend of £9.9 million to shareholders – a prior year final dividend of £6.15 million, at 1.93p per share, and an interim dividend of £3.7 million, at 1.16p per share.

Just less than half of shares are held by Airport Group, a company owned by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, while a small majority is held among councils in the West Midlands.

The airport processed a total of 8.6 million passengers during the financial year, which represented a 0.9 per cent annual increase – the first rise reported by the airport since 2008/09.

New opportunities will open up for the airport in 2014 when the extended runway mean airlines will be able to fly to the Far East and the west coast of the US but last year Dublin continued to be the most popular destination, closely followed by Dubai and Amsterdam.

Overall, revenue increased by 0.7 per cent at the airport, to £104 million. Aeronautical income fell by 5.6 per cent to £47.6 million, but commercial revenue – from operations like retail and car parking at the airport – rose by 6.6 per cent to £56.4 million.

The directors’ report states: “Following a prolonged period of uncertainty in the UK economy and beyond, Birmingham Airport has seen a return to growth in 2011/12.

“Growth has predominantly come from a recovery in the business sector, with full-service carriers such as Lufthansa, KLM, Brussels and Turkish all experiencing double-digit year-on-year growth.

“This has been helped by factors, including the additional day in February and the non-reoccurance of the volcanic ash cloud and snow which impacted the previous year.”

Still pushing to try and get a Chicago service back.

Chicago backing campaign to reinstate direct flights to Birmingham

Chicago is fully behind a campaign to try and get flights to Birmingham reinstated to transform business links between the twinned cities.

The move was highlighted as the British Consulate revealed the Birmingham-Chicago connection is one which is very much alive and kicking.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Second City’s sister partnership with the Windy City

More than 350 North American companies, including Microsoft, Motorola and Cadbury owner Kraft Foods – which is headquartered in Chicago – provide employment for 60,000 people in the Birmingham area.

Around 10,000 people in Birmingham are employed by firms based in the Chicago area alone.

The industry link between the two cities is so important that in August 2012, bosses from Birmingham Airport and the Chicago Department of Aviation – operator of Chicago O’Hare International – signed a memorandum of understanding, agreeing to work together to strengthen trade, tourism and cultural links.

It is hoped flights between Birmingham and Chicago will be brought back in the future – more than 11 years after they were withdrawn following the September 11 attacks.

Jonathan Daniel, vice consul for policy and communications at the British Consulate Chicago, said the Birmingham-Chicago relationship was going strong.

He said: “With the twin city relationships, there has been a movement from just having something down on paper, to having a second look and trying to make the most of the relationship.

“People want to know how they can really benefit, and you can see people and organisations in Chicago and Birmingham working closely together, from the airports through to the University of Birmingham.

“There’s a reception in Chicago in February where we are going to introduce Birmingham Airport to local business leaders and politicians to highlight the need for that air link again.

“But this relationship is not just about business, it’s about culture too. The University of Birmingham has been particularly good at building links, and there’s a lot of things even we don’t know about at the Consulate – arts projects and smaller partnerships which have grown organically.”

There is more in the link mainly about business and education ties.

Birmingham Airport has appointed Tom Screen as its new Aviation Strategy and Development Manager to help to grow the Airport’s airline and route network.

He joins Birmingham Airport from Thomson Airways where he has held the position of Aviation Planning Manager since August 2008 and will manage a team of two, reporting to the Aviation Development Director.

His main responsibilities include overseeing the generation of information to the business for budgeting and forecasting purposes, and identifying market opportunities as the Airport continues to develop and attract new carriers.

Commenting on Tom’s arrival, William Pearson, Birmingham Airport’s Aviation Development Director, said, “I’m confident that Tom will be a great addition to the team and to the business as we strive to deliver growth at the Airport and develop our route network.”
In previous roles Tom has also worked for Airport Coordination Ltd and First Choice Airways (Air 2000).

Commenting on his appointment, Tom added, “I’m delighted to be given this new role at Birmingham Airport. The next few years will be exciting times for the company with the runway extension and the development of a high speed rail link to London. Birmingham is in a great position to forge ahead as a viable alternative airport for carriers looking to expand services into the UK and I look forward to playing my part in that."

Originally from Oxford, Tom spent his formative years in Cheshire before moving to St Albans in 2008. He’s a musician, keen runner and cricketer in his spare time.

Mr Kehoe announced that the former Elmdon Terminal building would be brought back into

😆 It could become a new Birmingham tourist attraction.

Most airports seem to have aviation related academies these days so BHX might as well join the bandwagon.

Jonathan Walker: Whispered talk of a second Birmingham Airport runway

http://www.birminghampost.net/comment/b ... -33043088/

Interesting read Ray although it will be many years before there is ever a need for a second runway at Birmingham and it will probably require a change in government aviation policy if it is to ever happen. It would be pointless to invest in additional runways at present. Manchester's second runway is a perfect example which goes unused for long periods.

Indeed. I can see where he's coming from because, as far as I know, the second runway was never completely cancelled just that 'it won't be needed before at least 2030'. Obviously alot has happened since then and the world is now a different place, it could always remain an option but barring a dramatic change in thinking I don't see it happening in my lifetime.

Just noticed an article about BHX's new radar coming online and noticed it wasn't twinned with SSR, with them opting for Primary Radar only. Anyone know why? (It is usually co-mounted with the primary radar, I assume they have a separate SSR tower, but where is it on the airfield?)

Heads Up!

i must be a lunatic. Friday 25th Sept will see me doing a daytrip that involves me leaving my flat in Manchester at 1am and not getting back home until after midnight. All because I'm doing a Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands trip.... out of Glasgow
For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
