Flybe's new Bournemouth route no risk to Southampton Airport

AIRLINE Flybe has moved to dismiss fears it may switch from Southampton Airport to its Bournemouth rival, after bosses revealed plans to launch flights there for the first time.

Currently by far the biggest carrier at Southampton, Flybe yesterday announced it is to launch a daily service to Manchester from Bournemouth starting this May.

Coming just days after the firm announced an end to its sponsorship of Saints and as Bournemouth Airport bosses put the finishing touches to a new terminal, the development triggered concerns the regional flights giant may quit Southampton.

Traditionally more of a holidaymakers airport than Southampton, which is popular with business travellers, Flybe’s spread along the south coast puts it in direct competition with bitter rival Ryanair and budget giant Easyjet.

A Flybe spokesman pointed out the Southampton to Manchester service runs six times a day, compared to just one flight from Bournemouth.

The airline, which employs 250 people in Southampton, grew its operations in Southampton by 7.5 per cent last year and expects to at least repeat the performance during 2010.

A spokesman said: “Flybe are the biggest domestic airline in the UK and there are very few airports we don’t fly from and Bournemouth is one of those.

“It is no surprise that as we look to increase our market share that we would look at other airports.

“But to compare our operation at Southampton to Bournemouth is like comparing apples and pears. It’s a completely different product.

“Southampton is our busiest base in that we offer more routes from there than anywhere else and we look forward to offering more in the future. Our commitment to Southampton is unaffected.”

He added that they would “see what happens” at Bournemouth but that there was “nothing further planned” to happen there this year.

Flybe Southampton – Paris service to switch from CDG to Orly

Southampton Airport is to lose its long-standing link with France’s main airport, Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG). From October Flybe will switch its Paris service, which runs once or twice a day, to Orly, the French regional airport eight miles outside the city. However, it will increase them to three a day.

The change is part of a codeshare deal between Flybe and Air France that will see the French airline drop its own Orly route from Southampton, its last remaining service from the airport, as it effectively quits the hub.

Loss of direct access to one of Europe’s biggest aviation hubs is a blow for travellers from Southampton, who previously had enjoyed the benefit of connections to every major destination via the link. A spokesman for Flybe said the airline hoped to reinstate the CDG route in the 'short term'.

It is weird but I suppose Flybe and Air France think the new code share will support the new service. Doesn't Orly have a lot of connections with French speaking African nations?

Flybe add Southampton – Dublin flights ahead of six nations clash

Flybe is increasing capacity to meet the exceptional passenger demand between Southampton and Dublin ahead of the Six Nations match next month between England and Ireland. The airline will operate a total of 26 flights to and from Southampton to the Irish capital over the March 19 weekend, and has substituted 118-seat Embraer 195 jets for the 78-seater Q400 aircraft that normally fly the route on several of the flights.

Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer, Mike Rutter, says: ‘One of the secrets of Flybe’s successful business model is our ability to react quickly to our customers’ needs. The travel demand over this Six Nations’ rugby weekend is no exception. By having the ability to add extra flights and substituting larger aircraft on others, we have been able to increase our capacity by 85%. This ensures that no fans are disappointed by not being able to make it to the match in person to cheer whichever of the two teams they support.’

Flybe is to introduce what it calls a 'leisure hub' at SOU. The idea is that passengers will fly to SOU from the UK regions and there connect with flights to such countries as France and Italy. Don't they do this already at MAN, albeit not just for leisure destinations?

There's a lot of French regional destinations that only get served from SOU and maybe wouldn't work from the likes of MAN. That's why they want to turn SOU into a leisure hub. Routes like Bergerac, Limoges and Brest may not work from MAN. I also read on prune that Flybe were looking at leasing 2 Saab 2000s from Eastern Airways to serve some of their more marginal routes.

Flybe serve Bergerac from MAN. (As well as La Rochelle, Rennes, Nantes, Lyon, Paris and Toulouse in France).

Ryanair serve MAN-LIG so flybe would get slaughtered on that route.

Brest, Bordeaux and Biarritz are the only 3 routes missing, and all 3 could easily be served if flybe wished, especially Bordeaux, probably the largest unserved route from MAN to France now.

Looks like Flybe have seen off KLM on the Amsterdam route as it's no longer bookable from April.
Edit: KLM have pulled the route due to lack of onward connecting traffic.

Flights to Alicante, Düsseldorf, La Rochelle, Nantes, and Rennes will terminate on October 27.
Just gets worse for SOU. It's often said that an airport needs a rail link to succeed. SOU has one of the best in terms of getting from the station to the airport terminal but it hasn't stopped the airport seeing its passenger numbers nose-dive in the past year or two.

Prestwick is another where a decent rail link could not prevent passenger numbers falling off a cliff.

Aviation industry is really going through the mill at present.

Flybe have announced they have shut the doors and bankrupt, its been a long time ito happen. I feel for the workforce they are always the ones to suffer.Hop the Flybe staff can get sorted with work.It will impact on many airports around the UK, but the staff must come first and hope they get sorted.
