Terrorism

There is considered to be a heightened threat of terrorist attacks globally against UK interests and British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.

Terrorists continue to plan attacks in Egypt. Attacks could be indiscriminate and occur without prior warning. Foreigners could be targeted in tourist resorts or other locations frequented by foreigners. Previous attacks have almost exclusively targeted the security forces, their facilities and other government buildings. You should take great care near these places.

There is a threat of kidnapping, particularly in remote desert areas.

Ansar Bait-al-Maqdis (ABM) are the most active terrorist group in Egypt. In November 2014 ABM announced they had pledged allegiance to ISIL.

Most ABM attacks have targeted government and security forces. ABM’s main area of operations is northern Sinai, but they have claimed responsibility for attacks in other areas including Cairo, the western desert and Nile delta cities. In February 2014, ABM killed 3 South Korean tourists and their driver in an attack on a bus in Taba (Sinai). ABM has claimed responsibility for the death in August 2014 of a US oil worker in the western desert.

There have also been a large number of low-level and largely unclaimed attacks in Cairo and elsewhere. See Terrorism

There have been threats to western nationals, institutions, and businesses posted on websites and social media. The FCO is constantly reviewing the threat to British nationals from international terrorism and will reflect any credible threats in this travel advice.

Sharm el Sheikh

Enhanced security measures are in place to protect the Sharm el Sheikh resort areas. Egyptian military are situated in Sharm el Sheikh international airport, at check points around the perimeter of Sharm el Sheikh and throughout the South Sinai Governorate. Routine security checks are being performed on entry into the airport and the police are carrying out vehicle checks in Sharm el Sheikh. There were no violent protests in the South Sinai resorts during recent disturbances in Egypt.

Hurghada

Enhanced security measures are in place to protect the resort areas in Hurghada. Egyptian military are situated in and around Hurghada international airport. There are checkpoints around Hurghada and throughout the Red Sea Governorate. There are roadblocks in place in the town and monitoring of areas often frequented by tourists. In Hurghada on 14 August 2013 there were some violent clashes, in an area away from tourist resorts. One man was killed.

Re: Information: Egypt Travel Advice

Thanks for posting that, Aviador. I think that the UK and a number of western European nations are just as likely to be the victim of major terrorist action as Egypt. With police and military numbers being scaled back substantially in the UK it may be that Egypt is in a better position to employ an obvious uniformed deterrent presence in tourist areas than we could do here.

These days there are relatively few places in the world where a terrorist threat is non-existent.

Re: Information: Egypt Travel Advice

Thanks for the advice, I'm travelling there on the 2 March. We went there September 2013 and the hotel where we were staying was only 30% full where as the time before which was a similar time of the year, but before the troubles it was 70% full

Tunisia Travel Advise

Gunmen attacked the Imperial Hotel and Hotel Club Riu Bellevue at Port El Kantaoui, near Sousse, earlier today. A number of people have been killed and injured. A British Embassy crisis team is on its way to the area.

Some attackers may still be at large. Any British nationals in these hotels or nearby should remain indoors, and contact their tour operator and the Foreign Office on the hotline number below. For security reasons they should not advertise their location on social media or when speaking to journalists.

FCO Hotline number: +44 (0)207 008 0000

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to:

the Chaambi Mountain National Park area
the Tunisia-Algeria border crossing points at Ghardimaou, Hazoua and Sakiet Sidi Youssef
the militarized zone south of, but not including, the towns of El Borma and Dhehiba
within 5km of the Libya border area from north of Dhehiba up to but not including the Ras Ajdir border crossing
The FCO advise against all but essential travel to:

areas south of, and including, the towns of Nefta, Douz, Médenine, Zarzis (including the Tunisia-Libya border crossing point at Ras Ajdir)
within 30km of the border with Algeria south of, and including, the town of Jendouba (this area includes the archaeological sites of Bulla Regia and Chemtou)
the governorate of Kasserine, including the town of Sbeitla
If you travel to the interior of Tunisia, you should do so with a reputable tour guide.

There is a high threat from terrorism, including kidnapping. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners. See Terrorism

A terrorist attack took place at the Bardo museum in the centre of Tunis on 18 March. A number of people were killed, including a British national. Further attacks are possible. You should be especially vigilant at this time and follow the advice of Tunisian security authorities and your tour operator.

424,707 British nationals visited Tunisia in 2014. Most British tourists stay in the coastal resorts and most visits are trouble free.

In the resort areas, the dress code is much like any European city or tourist area. In other parts of the country you should dress more modestly. See Local Laws and Customs

Take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling.

This was the advise issued by the UK Government Foreign Office as of 20:10 pm 26/06/15. Anybody wishing to check the most up to date version is advised to visit https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tunisia for more information.

It's very sad what happened in Tunisia and thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those involved.

Jetairfly have already announced that they will stop flying to Tunisia and Monarch are allowing those already booked to change destinations for no charge.

You also have to feel for the local restaurateurs, bar owners, shop keepers etc whose livelihood depends on tourism.

It's certainly likely to hit the Tunisia market hard. I wonder how many holidaymakers booked to go out there this weekend will have second thoughts. It's a hell of a decision to have to make at such short notice.

Those travelling in later weeks will have the time to reflect and perhaps switch their holiday elsewhere.

A few members on the LBA forum have suggested they would think twice about travelling to Tunisia now because of the threat of terrorism.

My view is we are at threat from terrorism everywhere we go and there isn't really much point in avoiding places like Tunisia, Egypt or Turkey when the UK and other western European countries are potentially just as dangerous.

This map indicates where the UK Government consider as most at risk from terrorism.

Thank you for that 'threat' map, Aviador.

Obviously it's an individual decision and naturally I respect what others decide whether they opt to give some countries a miss or travel there.

You are quite right to point out that the possibility of terrorism is not just restricted to those countries that have been recent victims. Regrettably this is something that we are all likely to have to endure for many years to come.

I have not read anywhere that you must not travel to Tunisia and as Aviador has said, it could happen anywhere in the world, never mind Europe.
The majority of people in today's society have "short memories". One of the aims of these attacks is to stop people travelling around and thereby affecting the economy of these countries.
If we stop going to Tunisia, they will then target another country dependent on tourism and it will carry on and eventually we will only venture out of our homes when we have no alternative.

Foreign Office tells UK Nationals to leave Tunisia because a terrorist attack is "highly likely".

150709_FCO_358_-_Tunisia_Travel_Advice_Ed6__WEB_.jpg

"Since the attack in Sousse, we have been working closely with the Tunisian authorities to investigate the attack and the wider threat from terrorist groups in Tunisia. Although we have had good co-operation from the Tunisian government, including putting in place additional security measures, the intelligence and threat picture has developed considerably, reinforcing our view that a further terrorist attack is highly likely. On balance, we do not believe the mitigation measures in place provide adequate protection for British tourists in Tunisia at the present time and we have therefore changed our travel advice accordingly."

UK Threat Level

It does seem a bit of a knee jerk reaction by the Foreign Office given the UK's own threat level is currently "severe" which means "a terrorist attack is highly likely".

I'm not suggesting people should put themselves in any danger, people just need to be much more wary of their surroundings, not just abroad but here in the UK too.

The MI5 UK Threat Level

Members of the public should always remain alert to the danger of terrorism and report any suspicious activity to the police on 999 or the anti-terrorist hotline: 0800 789 321

Just a quick update about the current situation in Egypt.

Although the UK Government has suspended all flights to Sharm el Sheikh the previous information about travel to Egypt remains unchanged.

British schools planning to take groups to France between now and 22 November follow the French Ministry of Education’s advice not to travel

This map was posted on here prior to the recent events in Paris. It just goes to show how real the threat is.

Today the foreign office has updated it's advise for travel to France.

UK Foreign Offce said:
On Friday 13 November, a number of terrorist incidents took place in Paris resulting in widespread casualties. You should be vigilant in public places, follow the advice of the local authorities and subscribe to email alerts for updates to this travel advice. French authorities have heightened security measures so allow time in your travel plans for any disruption this may cause. Systematic border control checks have been implemented at all entry points into France. A national state of emergency has been declared for 3 months. Public gatherings, flying drones and the use of fireworks in the Ile de France region (Paris and surrounding area) are prohibited.

As part of the national state of emergency, the French Ministry of Education has cancelled all school trips within France by French schools until Sunday 22 November. This includes excursions to cultural sites (theatres, museums, etc) and travel by school groups on public transport. These cancellations don’t specifically include foreign school parties, but [hi-lighty:3e9wbmb2]the French Ministry of Education has advised foreign school groups to avoid travelling to France until after 22 November.[/hi-lighty:3e9wbmb2]

It's probably nothing but… if you see or hear anything that could be terrorist-related trust your instincts and call the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321

Turkey warning: US advises of threats to Istanbul and Antalya

The US has issued a travel warning for it's citizens travelling to Turkey. The warning advises of credible threats to Istanbul and Antalya inparticular.

"There are credible threats to tourist areas, in particular to public squares and docks in Istanbul and Antalya. Please exercise extreme caution if you are in the vicinity of such areas"

The UK Foreign Office has just issued a travel warning for people travelling to the Euro2016 football tournament in France.
View attachment 3397

The Foreign Office issued a statement saying "stadiums, fan zones, venues broadcasting the tournament and transport hubs and links represent potential targets for terrorists".

Early news suggests it may be an attempt by junior and middle ranking members of the Turkish military. Turkey is a strategically important country and any serious unrest there will undoubtedly lead to more uncertainty in the world.
