United Airlines to Launch Nonstop Service Between Chicago and Edinburgh


Seasonal service will be the first between the two cities


CHICAGO, Sept. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines will launch nonstop summer seasonal service between its Chicago hub at O'Hare International Airport and Edinburgh, Scotland, beginning May 22, 2014, subject to government approval. This will be the first scheduled nonstop service between the two cities.

The flights will operate five times weekly from May 22 to June 11, daily between June 12 and Sept. 1 and four times weekly between Sept. 2 and Oct. 5, 2014.

"We're pleased to add Chicago-to-Edinburgh nonstop service to United's extensive trans-Atlantic route network," said Brian Znotins, United's vice president of network. "In addition to providing a direct link between the two cities, the new flights are conveniently timed to provide connections in Chicago to and from more than 125 destinations across North, Central and South America and the Caribbean."

The flights will depart Chicago at 6 p.m., arriving in Edinburgh at 7:45 a.m. the following day. The return flights will depart Edinburgh at 10:25 a.m., arriving in Chicago at 1 p.m. the same day (all times local). Flight times are seven hours, 45 minutes eastbound and eight hours, 35 minutes westbound.

The flights will operate using Boeing 757-200 aircraft with a total of 169 seats – 16 flat-bed seats in United BusinessFirst and 153 in United Economy, including 45 Economy Plus seats with added legroom and increased personal space.

United offers more nonstop service to more destinations from its Chicago O'Hare hub than any other carrier and has added 11 new routes from Chicago since the beginning of 2013.

United currently operates year-round nonstop service from its New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport to both Edinburgh and Glasgow, having started service to Scotland in 1998.

That's a huge coup for Edinburgh airport but I think United Airlines would have been better off flying to Chicago from Glasgow rather than Edinburgh. Edinburgh might be the capital of Scotland but it's population is significantly less than the neighbouring city.

The nonstop flights between Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Edinburgh, Scotland (EDI) will operate daily with Boeing 757 aircraft. Flight times for the Edinburgh service will be 7 hours 15 minutes eastbound and 8 hours westbound. United also offers seasonal summer service to Edinburgh from Chicago and year-round service from New York/Newark.

Growing speculation that the planned metal on the IAD route (752) may be upgraded to a 788. If confirmed, this would be the first UA Dreamliner to serve EDI.

United making additional changes to aircraft on EDI-IAD route. 764 will now operate for month of July on Saturday and Sunday from EDI. More changes highly likely. August is traditionally the busiest month for Americans travelling so expect to see 764 or similar deployed.

All of the current routes is on sale for S24. The whispers and it’s only that is that DEN could be a new addition to the EDI portfolio.

They link DEN with only LHR, FRA and MUC so I'd have thought EDI unlikely but happy to be proven wrong.

It’s looking more likely that United will replace most of their 752 and 763’s with Dreamliners. They also have a number of 321XLR on order. I’d be hopeful of seeing a mix of both on UA routes to/from EDI.

United Washington service will re-start much earlier than normal. 30th March 2024 from IAD. Credit PM for the info. Star Alliance strengthening their presence at EDI and increasing capacity at Easter. Will Sky Team airlines respond?

EDI is highly likely to be one of the first long haul routes to see United’s new 321XLR. As expected, the 757 will be phased out.

United executive said the new Airbus A321XLR will replace Boeing 757 routes and open new ones

United's SVP of network planning and alliances, Patrick Quayle, said the A321XLR will open cities in Europe and Africa that the 757 couldn't reach.
