as long as I have understood the provisional statistics correctly, here is my latest PAX table.

Hi Muddycoffee, thanks for posting your monthly graph!
I don't know how many passengers the airport lost last year because of the ash cloud but last month figures show April of this year has been one of the poorest on recorded according to your graph.
All things considered I think the airport has done well when you take into account the loss of easyjet and the arse end of the worst economic climate in modern history. The year on year passenger figures prove this.
Over the next couple of years it will be really important that Doncaster airport picks up some new business, preferably of the scheduled type to prove the airports worthiness to the South Yorkshire business community.
For the purpose of percentages I'll show the passenger figures again.

A total of 53,672 passengers past throught Doncaster Sheffield airport during April 19.3% up on last year.
Rolling year passenger figures stand at 878,302, up 14.3% year on year.

A total of 88,620 passengers used Doncaster airport during May, that's -6.2% down on May last year.
Rolling year passengers stand at 872,430 up 11.9% year on year.

Agreed. It seems to me that they are doing quite well considering the current state of the economy.
If you look at all the UK airports it is a very poor picture at the moment, when you compare figures for June 2011 and Last June. At Least half of the UK airports are doing less business than last year, many of the smaller ones are doing much worse.

Latest update for July 2011.
With the news reporting spiralling unemployment of 2.5million, and many people working part time because they can't get full time employment, I'd say this is steady progress and topping 100,000 for july is better than I hoped for..

Not doing too bad considering the loss of easyjet and Aer Arran. It seems though that the airport will need to attract more traffic next year due to continued cutbacks from TCX (and TOM??). A shame the well known low-cost airline recently snubbed the airport, would have been a major coup and would have been able to offer routes at business friendly frequencies.

I get the firm impression that many people are tightening their belts this year and giving up their usual holiday due to worry about future finances depending on what the government do next to punish the people.
At some point the politicians will switch from saving up for the next election campaign, doom and gloom, sacking or downgrading public sector workers and talking down the economy to the next phase which will be tax breaks and throwing money about because they have (ahem) "turned the economy around" so that people will feel well off again and vote for the tories.
When this starts to happen in 12 to 18 months then I am sure flights will go up.
Also, some people who are foregoing trips abroad this year will think they have done enough and continue as normal next year.
We are now in the second year of the five year fixed term government, this means that when they start giving money away they will need enough time in office to benefit from the glory of the "feel good" factor. Therfore from May 2013 they begin the last 2 years in office and by then I expect they will need this final 2 years to talk things up and make floating voters feel good about themselves and the government.

I think all airports are in the same predicament and the best any of them can hope for is that passenger numbers stay the same.
It's very grim watching news about the economy at the moment. It does kind if make me laugh though with the way the Conservatives are dealing with it. During the General Election the economic failure was all Labour's fault. Now the Conservatives and Lib Dems have their hands on power and now they are the decision makers, all of a sudden this is a global phenomenon. 🙄

Aviador, I have long believed that when it comes to things such as economic troubles, all political parties should be working closely to try to sort it out, there should be no political one-upmanship in this situation.. Look at Ken Livingston on Newsnight in the middle of the recent riots for instance...
Back on topic, every small regional airport in the country is feeling the pinch. Passengers go for the cheaper fares and the conveniant flight times when the purse strings are tight, and smaller airports cannot hope to compete. Im personally pleased that the KLM flights at HUY are seeing some of the best passenger figures for a cut down schedule that I believe have ever been seen on the route, they are seeing 10%+ growth every month despite being cut to 3xdaily as opposed to 4xdaily last year. TOM seem to be filling their aircraft at DSA, and loads on the Ryanair ALC route from both DSA and HUY are looking strong, despite them being almost head to head.

[offtopic]I think Pug was referring to easyJet and I think that the fact that easyJet axed it's 5 routes from DSA and then started, I know it was only 1 but still opened, operations at LBA, they did stab DSA in the back effectively, moving to an airport with a higher track record and somewhere where they can definitely attract high passenger numbers!
