With today's news that Ryanair is to open a 3-aircraft base at Southend next summer, does it make Ryanair expansion at CWL more likely, less likely or have no bearing?

What is does do in my eyes is make MOL's assertion last year that future growth would be concentrated on mainland Europe instead of the UK because of Brexit difficult to take seriously. Already there has been growth announced at a number of UK Ryanair bases.

I would love to think that Ryanair has expansion plans for Cardiff, based aircraft would be amazing but extremely unlikely but i would hope that at least another route or 2 or 3 is in the pipeline! I know people will point to Bristol but Southend is next door to their biggest base. I won't be holding my breath though!

From what I've read elsewhere Stobart are leasing the BE Embraers to prove certain routes would work to attract other operators. How true this is i'm unsure. Given that of all the FR routes announced today, there is only 1 or 2 overlaps, I think Milan and DUB. If the above is true then it's no different to the current setup at CWL and DSA where the aircraft are being leased. How that works with the aircraft transferred to Stobart, I guess Flybe are then just the ticket seller.
Just an out there suggestion, if Stobart are trying to grow the Airport and it's route, as it's doing with Carlisle, could they be a potential private company to take on running CWL?

I believe originally the aircraft were wet leased and then it became a dry lease and now Stobarts own 3 of the ex Flybe E195s and operate them with their own crews. I'm not sure about the deal between them but I'd assume Flybe would get some sort of franchise fee from Stobarts. Stobart are also the handling company at SEN as well.

To be fair to Stobart it's a big coup for the airport to attract Ryanair and not just 3 weekly flights but a 3 aircraft base as well. No doubt Easyjet won't be happy but i guess that Stobart are gambling they'll stick around and Ryanair will grow the airport. Makes you wonder if CWL is willing to make the same gamble but with Vueling?
The only thing with Stobart is would they want to own it all rather than just be a partner as I'd be surprised if the WAG would give up a majority shareholding .

The current WG administration has said clearly that it intends to retain a majority holding in the airport. That might be a problem with some potential private sector partners but isn't necessarily an insurmountabe obstacle. A new WG administration might take a different view anyway.

It appears that the aircraft EI-EVJ operating today's Faro flight went tech and is delayed. Ryanair have brought in engineers using M-ABJA their Learjet 45 which came in from Stansted.

According to the airports website FR4761 and FR4760 the weekly Ryanair flight to Tenerife has been cancelled for tomorrow.

Yep but for this flight the problem is that it's only 1 weekly. I feel for the passengers as they are going to have real difficulty getting home.

So true Jerry. It turns pax away from booking with them. It also makes pax look else where for flights for the ones that have not booked their flights yet..

I suppose the main problem is it's flown by Spanish crew, if Cardiff had a based aircraft then it would most likely still be operating. Hopefully some sort of solution will be found for the passengers.

Its a shame when problems like this crop up,its a pity they could not use aircraft and crew from this end.Seeing we are now in high season there is not enough aircraft or crew to do this sort of thing.

There have been several reports in recent months of both easyJet and Ryanair cancelling flights at BRS and other airports leaving passengers in the lurch. It's usually been the result of industrial action or weather or aircraft/crews being out of position/time because of earlier industrial action/weather problems.

We can't do too much about the weather but industrial action...................

Had a look through some old posts and unless CWL gets anything special like a new route (keeping my fingers crossed!) we probably won't get summer 2019 released for CWL till the end of August beginning of September.

Summer 2019

Ryanair is now starting to load next summer's programme into some of its bases' booking engines. We ought to know within the next few weeks if the airline is planning anything further for CWL beyond Faro and Tenerife. Malaga and Alicante might be contenders for routes and possibly Palma as well, perhaps a couple of times a week as with FAO and TFS, or there might be something bigger than that. My guess would be the former if anything is to happen but I'm never surprised at what airlines do or don't do nowadays.

Would be great if the airport could get some more routes and flights out of Ryanair! A base would be fantastic but i am a bit cynical when it comes to Ryanair and i would be quite surprised if they added more.

If expansion occurred at the airport I'd be surprised if it was in the form of a base in the first instance - that might well come a bit later. I would not be surprised at the appearance of one or all of the sun routes I mentioned in #277.

At Newcastle they have a pretty good network and no base so they don't really need to base.
What would be really good is if at least they could get the flights up to at least 1 a day on various routes and they'd introduce a route that is new/returned.

With the airport going forward i just hope they don't consider chopping the flights they do have and move them to Bristol or use them for somewhere else though there is no suggestion that they will i guess that will always be a fear as long as the Ryanair route network is so small. Despite only operating 3 flights a week losing them would be a big negative!
