We don't know if VY were forced off or chose to drop it and then FR came in. I doubt they would allow the latter without a fight given that BCN is their home turf.

Tuesdays and Saturdays 2 weekly
Tuesday BCN-CWL 08.25-09.30 CWL-BCN 09.55-13.00
Saturdays BCN-CWL 07.40-08.45 CWL-BCN 09.10-12.15

That is true but they did have the route onsale and then dropped it and now we have Ryanair launching the route. There is one good thing in that CWL now has a Ryanair movement every day during S19.

This is great news - Didn’t see this one coming.

You watch FR’s figures completely eclipse that of VY on this route - Brand awareness means everything in this industry.

So Ryanair for Summer 2019 looks like this.
Faro is 2 weekly Monday and Friday the same as this year.
Monday FAO-CWL 08.45-11.25 CWL-FAO 11.50-14.30
Friday FAO-CWL 16.20-19.00 CWL-FAO 19.25-22.05
Tenerife South is 1 weekly Thursday the same as this year.
TFS-CWL 14.20-18.15 CWL-TFS 18.40-22.45
Malta NEW is 2 weekly Wednesday and Sunday
MLA-CWL 07.00-09.25 CWL-MLA 09.50-14.15
Barcelona NEW is 2 weekly Tuesdays and Saturdays
Tuesday BCN-CWL 08.25-09.30 CWL-BCN 09.55-13.00
Saturdays BCN-CWL 07.40-08.45 CWL-BCN 09.10-12.15
That gives Cardiff 7 weekly flights from Ryanair +4 on 2018 and a Ryanair movement on every day.
I guess i should've held my breath!

People are assuming that the reason FR are operating this route is because VY has dropped it? It has been off sale now for well over a month!

What is interesting and good is that Ryanair have launched a route to Cardiff that they don't operate at Bristol.

Ryanair launches Cardiff Summer 2019 schedule

Ryanair, Europe’s No.1 airline, today (18 Oct) launched its Cardiff Summer 2019 schedule with 2 new routes to Barcelona and Malta and 4 routes in total, as it doubles its Cardiff traffic.
Ryanair’s Cardiff Summer 2019 schedule will deliver:
  • 2 new routes to: Barcelona (2 weekly) & Malta (2 weekly)
  • 4 routes in total: Faro (2 weekly) & Tenerife (weekly)
  • 7 weekly flights
  • 100,000 customers p.a.
Cardiff consumers and visitors can now book their holidays on 4 routes for summer 2019 on the lowest fares. To celebrate the launch of its Cardiff Summer 2019 schedule, Ryanair has launched a seat sale with fares from Cardiff on sale from just £24.99, for travel in April and May, which must be booked by midnight Friday (19 Oct) only on the Ryanair.com website.
Ryanair’s Robin Kiely said:
“We are pleased to launch our Cardiff Summer 2019 schedule with 4 routes, including 2 new routes to Barcelona and Malta, as we double our Cardiff traffic. Welsh customers can now book flights to the sunshine as far out as October 2019, all on the lowest fares.
To celebrate we are releasing seats for sale from just £24.99, for travel in April and May, which are only available for booking until midnight Friday (19 Oct). Since these amazing low fares will be snapped up quickly, customers should log onto www.ryanair.com and avoid missing out.”

CEO of Cardiff Airport, Deb Barber, said:
“It’s great to see that Ryanair continues to recognise the potential that exists to build on its offering at Cardiff Airport, having already announced a new route to Malta from April 2019. Furthermore, we are very pleased by today’s announcement that Ryanair will begin operating regular, low-cost flights to Barcelona from next summer - the ideal destination for a city break or beach holiday in the sun.
“The announcement of two new routes in as many months means that Ryanair has now doubled its choice of destinations for Summer 2019.”

Do we know days and timings? also does FR have a base in bcn?
A big base I believe - 13 aircraft?

Has Vueling announced its summer 2019 schedule to Barcelona?

Yes it has. BCN went onsale originally as the same as this year. 3 weekly flights Tuesday Thursday and Saturday then about a month ago they took them off sale. Alicante and Malaga and PMI are still onsale.

Thank you.

Would members view it as a good thing or not if FR encroached further into vueling's cwl territory, say pmi for example?

I don't see it happening unless they based aircraft and honestly i don't see that happening at least not in the short term. BCN was Vuelings weakest route as they'd already downsized it from 4 weekly to 3 weekly the other routes they are stronger on.

Actually Vueling pulled the route from their schedule over a month ago.

Therefore I would argue that If this is the case then Cardiff Airport management have done well to find a replacement so swiftly.

Agreed.

Given that ALC was once publicly stated to be a very well performing route for VY I would think FR would want a piece of that pie as well. Hopefully they can run alongside each other on the Spanish routes if it were to ever happen.

It is interesting that FR have gone for a city route and not a package holiday route like ALC.

I don't think that Vueling and Ryanair are mutually exclusive on the summer sun routes but the winter might be a different matter. Would one of them be content to be summer-only to the sun?

I have a suspicion that Ryanair have been encouraged to keep away from our main Summer routes in order to satisfy Vueling.

It was made as a public comment during one ACC meeting that Cardiff Airport were trying to encourage Vueling to base at Cardiff. I imagine part of their deal would be to keep Ryanair off the routes.

Now if Vueling have pulled the route and Ryanair have indeed stepped in at short notice, I believe that any loyalties towards Vueling and keeping Ryanair at bay may cease. The question is that with a base at Bristol would Ryanair be interested in keeping the same number of frequencies or cut them. This would then be the gamble that Cardiff Airport may have to take.

I suppose from the airports point of view if they have tried for a while to get Vueling to expand and offer new routes and even base but nothing has come from it then they may have thought that a possible better long term strategy would be now to encourage Ryanair. The likelihood of a base is small but it may well be possible for Ryanair to build up a decent network with non based aircraft.
It definitely will be interesting to see where Ryanair go next at CWL.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
