Icelandair
An Icelandair Boeing 757-200, seating 183 passengers, offering three cabin service, leather seats and personal in-flight entertainment systems.

Iceland’s leading airline since 1937, Icelandair, announces scheduled service from Birmingham (BHX) to Reykjavik (KEF). Birmingham will become Icelandair’s 5th gateway in the UK and 39th overall. The new flights will operate twice weekly, Thursdays and Mondays, from 5th of February 2015.

Andres Jonsson, General Manager of Icelandair UK, said: “We are delighted to announce Birmingham as our newest gateway in the UK. Our first route from the Midlands will not only open up opportunities of travelling to and from Iceland but also a refreshing and convenient way to North America.”

Just under 3 hours from Birmingham, the Nordic country is expected to become a popular year-round destination from the Midlands. “Iceland’s nature, including the Northern Lights and the hot springs, has always been the biggest attraction but Icelandic locals will also offer a warm welcome. In fact, Iceland was voted the friendliest nation on earth in a recent poll by World Economic Forum” adds Andres.

The new service will also offer an attractive flight option to North America. Andres explains: “By using Iceland’s geographical position midway between Europe and North America we can offer some of the fastest elapse times from Birmingham to popular destinations such as Washington D.C. and Seattle.

William Pearson, Birmingham Airport’s Aviation Development Director, added, “The decision by Icelandair to commence services from Birmingham is fantastic news for Midlands’ business and leisure travellers wanting to reach Reykjavik, and indeed onwards to the USA and Canada using Icelandair’s strong network of connecting flights.

“The carrier recognises the benefits that Birmingham Airport can deliver to its operation and its passengers, such as the strong local catchment, excellent road and rail access and efficient terminal infrastructure.

“We’re therefore very pleased that Icelandair has chosen the Midlands to become its new UK gateway and we look forward to working with the team and welcoming passengers on the new service in February 2015.”

The Birmingham service operates an Icelandair Boeing 757, seating 183 passengers, offering three cabin service, leather seats and personal in-flight entertainment systems.

Tickets go on sale today with one way fares to Iceland from £119.23. Flight numbers and timings are scheduled accordingly;

• FI494 departs Reykjavik (KEF) 07:50, arriving in Birmingham (BHX) 10:25
• FI495 departs Birmingham (BHX) 12:25, arriving in Reykjavik (KEF) 15:10

In addition to Birmingham, Icelandair also offers year round service from UK to Iceland from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow. Very good news, they will offer some good connections to North America. It remains to be seen whether they and Flybe can coexist on the route.

The more connections the better. I wonder if anyone has seen or heard any advertising for this service? Apart from the article on the airport's website I've not seen/heard anything at all, I wondered if it was maybe a little too early and we might see something around Christmas time?

Ive not seen or heard anything regarding this new route. I guess once the main summer season is over in a few weeks time, we may see something.

I’m no expert but I’d actually argue the opposite; FI are increasingly targeting the lower yielding US-Europe market – i.e. holidaymakers who tend to book months in advance. FI should really be spreading the word now if they hope to attract passengers to the likes of Orlando, Boston or New York next summer.

Very good point, BHX isn't exactly blessed in the Trans-Atlantic department and Orlando especially could be popular during the summer months.

Re: Orlando

Icelandair switching there Orlando flights from Sanford to Orlando International in 2015, something BHX pax should be aware of.

Extra flights added for October 2015 with half term showing as 4x weekly with the week either side at 3x weekly :)

Good to see an increase from Icelandair abeit a temporary one, i have heard suggestions that New York is doing well via KEF. United apparently had high summer loads throughout October, but with AA now on the scene, who knows ????????

The picture says it's TF-FIU which is a 200 series.

It's definitely a beauty though, a great one for the photographers :)

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
