This assumes the airport isn't closed due to strikes???

Interestingly, the airports are saying that contingencies are being put in place, but what could they be when there is only in ground handling agent??

I guess it depends on how many of the BHX based staff are a member of the union and of those, how many will be going on strike, unfortunately it's a question that cannot be asked.

I don't know the breakdown but if there are enough non union members to cover those two days they may get away with it.

Birmingham Airport is set to see its busiest ever Christmas as over half a million passengers are expected to travel through the terminal over the festive period - a 21.2% increase compared to last year.

In total 505,451 people will travel through the airport between Friday 16th December and Tuesday 3rd January.

The busiest day overall is expected to be Monday 2nd January when 30,077 passengers will be welcomed through the Midlands gateway, up 30.6% year-on-year as people return home after holidays or visiting loved ones.

On Christmas Day, the expected amount of total passengers is 13,590, up 82.2% year-on-year. Of this total, 7,619 will be departing passengers, up 67% on the same day last year.

The top three destinations on Christmas Day will be Dubai, Tenerife and Malaga. Also, people will be jetting off to places such as Madrid, Bucharest, Lanzarote, India, Dublin, Montego Bay, Cancun, Edinburgh, Islamabad, Amsterdam and Paris.

Birmingham Airport has recorded its busiest year in history seeing over 11.6 million passengers pass through its terminal in 2016.

In total 11,639,738 passengers travelled through the airport over the course of the year giving an increase of 14.2% compared to 2015 - equivalent to just over 1.4 million more people.

The busiest month was August when almost 1.3 million passengers were recorded in a single month and the busiest day was 26 August. Over the course of the year there were six months in which over a million passengers were recorded and the airport has now seen twenty-two months of consecutive record breaking growth.

December’s passenger figures significantly contributed to this total. Almost 845,000 passengers travelled through the terminal in the final month of 2016 – an increase of 23.7% year on year, equivalent to over 161,000 more people.

Both long haul and short haul sectors saw similar levels of growth in December with long haul up by 27.3% and short haul up by 23% year-on-year.

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “Last year was very fruitful as we celebrated the busiest 12 months in our 75 year history and were crowned the most punctual airport in the world by air travel intelligence company, OAG.

“We have also seen the list of long haul global connections rapidly expand which has resulted in more than a 27% increase. Qatar Airways arrived in March offering daily flights to the state of the art Hamad International Airport in the rapidly developing capital of Doha.

“Other new carriers in the past year have included Iberia Express, Blue Air, Czech Airlines, Cobalt and Albastar who have bought low cost seats to popular short haul destinations throughout Eastern and Central Europe. We also saw the introduction of the magnificent Emirates A380 aircraft in March.

“Whilst we have experienced an incredibly exciting year, Birmingham Airport is well-placed to continue growing. We look forward to launching more routes, a wider selection of airlines in 2017 and we plan to invest £100 million before the summer in our terminal and infrastructure facilities.”

Overall in 2016 scheduled traffic accounted for 89% and charter made up 11% of the total for the year.

In December, schedule traffic accounted for 92% of flights and saw a 24.4% growth rate compared to the same month last year, whereas charter traffic accounted for 8% with a 15.4% growth rate.

Caribbean, African, Asian and Middle Eastern destinations saw the greatest increase in passengers compared to the same month last year.

Scheduled destinations with significant year-on-year passenger growth in December were Madrid (+231.5%), Poznan (+130.2%), Warsaw (+76.4%) and Budapest (+70.6%).

Charter destinations with significant growth were Sofia (+173.8%), Shannon (+104.6%), Chambery (+59.7%) and Tenerife (+26.3%).

Absolutely amazing figures surpassing all expectations. A great turn around at Birmingham both in terms of destinations and airlines, I guess it reflects a wider confidence in the West Midlands economy. Let's hope 2017 is a great success too.

Amazing stuff. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going into this year. Where does it now rank vs the other UK airports? Still #7?

A truly stunning set of results and an amazing end of the year ...for some context, 1,400,000 additional passengers a year is huge for BHX. In 2015 DSA carried 0.9m, CWL carried 1.2m, JER carried 1.6m and SOU carried 1.8m, so in reality, in the space of a year, we have added another small airport of pax into BHX!!!

When such growth is achieved, yes there will be growing pains, all a consequence of having privatised airports. Our govt doesn't throw £billion at flashy airports like they do in the rest of the world, and so we have to wait until we can afford such facilities. That said, having arrived in LTN, MAN T3, LBA (a portacabib) over the last 12 months, I can assure you that BHX is far from a lone with its growing pains!

Ouch, you had to use Luton? I made that mistake once, never, ever again! Awful place :(

Agree with others the figures are great. Looking forward to what we have in store for 2017 :)

Really excellent figures and well done airport development. We helped in a small way last year but our family figures will be increased this year because a son and family are happy to pay 50 pounds more for well-timed flights to the Med. vs Luton which is closer for them. Equally we hope to use the airport on several occasions next year. The increased destinations are stimulating passengers, so long may it continue.

not quite certain about Birmingham's Press Release, the figures don't quite add up!! To reach a yearly total of 11,639,738 means that the December figure was 851,863 however the press release says December was almost 845,000!

these are the monthly figures for 2016 as per the Birmingham press releases :-

January 666,681
February 724,760
March 830,544
April 872,833
May 1,005,861
June 1,118,452
July 1,221,212
August 1,285,911
September 1,207,796
October 1,074,242
November 779,583
December 851,863 (more than 845,000!)

Total:- 11,639,738

and when has Shannon been a charter destination!!

any how great figures for 2016! (y)

Excellent figures. Long may the growth continue. I think Madrid has been top of the destination growth in just about every month. Proves that there are historically undeserved or unnerved destinations, as Madrid once was, which can be a real git in the Midlands...airlines take note.

13 million plus in 201 then.

Some excellent numbers for Dec.

Dubai +14
Doha 12,408 pax I make that 80%
Turkish -14
Islamabad +28
Air India +11
American +10
Newark -30
Montego Bay +15
Banjul +73

Innsbruck +45, Brussels +5, Chambery +39, CDG +7, Berlin +30, Dusseldorf +28, FRA +5, Munich +8, Stuttgart +15, Gibraltar +8, Cork +9, Dublin +13, Milan +18, Malta +66, Amsterdam +12, Faro +27, Funchal +22, Alicante +10, Barcelona +21, Madrid +232, Malaga +28, Arrecife +16, Fuerteventura +22, Las Palams +29. Tenerife +37, Keflavik +52, Geneva +37, Zurich +10, Sofia +3718, Budapest +71, Vilnius +18 (Kaunas in 2016), Krakow +11, Poznan +130, Warsaw Chopin +37, Bucharest 3595 pax.

The battle on Warsaw is an interesting one to watch. Ryanair saw 4751 pax to Modlin compared to Wizz 3965 pax to Chopin. With Wizz dropping March, April and October back to 2x weekly (although with an A321 there will still be more seats) are Ryanair winning?

Looking at the November figures and American carried more passengers to JFK than United did to Newark although I'm not sure how many flights operated? Were AA x5 and UA x4? Either way it certainly proves that there is a bit more demand than just a sole 757 across the pond from BHX. Perhaps a UA upgrade to a 76W isn't out of the question?

Part of the issue for BHX is that we are talking about 2 routes to the same city by rival airlines. If there were just UA operating to 2 different cities and cancelling one it would make a bit more sense for them to upgrade the remaining service to the 76W.

UA 75Ws appear to be operated as 16 J 153 Y.
AA 75Ws appear to be operated as 16 J 160 Y.
Collectively, it's 32 J 313 Y

Looking at UA's 76W configuration of 30 J 184 Y, you can see J class almost matches the 2 75Ws but around 130 down in Y class. The net increase of going daily 75W to 76W is 14 J and 31 Y. If AA is cancelling the route, it's because not enough J class passengers were flying. Whether they would transfer their allegiance to a rival airline is a moot point. To me, that just looks to be too much premium and too little economy added. Effectively, it's like UA actually operating a 2 daily schedule without the necessary amount of Y class.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
