CAA Stats for January

Passenger numbers for January were -10.2% down compared with the same month last year. Passenger numbers for the month of January were 1,181,447

The rolling year passenger numbers stand at 20,929,064 -4.3% down.

A disastrous year for Manchester airport having lost numerous inter continental services. If the year continues to show the same level of reductions, it's looking like the airport will be getting dangerously close to falling bellow the magic 20 mppa mark.

Re: Passenger Figures

Manchester Airport passengers down 10%

The recession has taken its toll on passenger numbers at Manchester Airport, which slumped by 10 percent last month. A total of 2,036,957 passengers passed through the airport's three terminals in July, down from 2.3m in the same month last year.

There were nearly 150,000 fewer charter passengers (down 16 percent), while the number of scheduled travellers was down by just over 47,000 (4.4 percent). On domestic routes, passenger numbers were down by just over 32,000 (12.3 percent). Overall, there were 16,473 aircraft movements compared with 19,500 in July last year.

In the year to date, total passenger numbers at the airport have fallen 10.8 percent to 7,054,17. Freight was 29 percent down at 8,597 tonnes compared with July 2008. In the year to date, freight is down 35 percent at 32,281 tonnes.

A spokesman for Manchester Airport said it expected better figures for August because of a last minute bookings rush as the bad summer weather puts people off the idea of holidaying at home.

Things are only going to get worse for Manchester as Ryanair open their new base up the road at Leeds.

Re: Passenger Figures

This was a quote from another forum, sadly the person who wrote it isn't registered here...

Manchester Airport predicted traffic outturn for 2009/10 is 18.2M pax and 172000 aircraft movements. Checking back in the CAA statistics that is roughly the same as the figures for the year 2000 when MAN had one runway. I'm not a MAN-basher, far from it, but by any measure that is sobering stuff.

We can debate the reasons, but for sure this dismal performance cannot be hung solely on the recession, MAN has been in trouble since 2006. Some sea change in the distribution of UK air travel is emerging, possibly permanent, but also MAG has lost the appetite to invest heavily in the manner required of large airports. It shows in the crumbling infrastructure, and cannot be masked by the blingy shops recently opened in T1 and T2. The City Council shareholders need to rethink their expectations in terms of direct financial returns, to enable more investment. A certain rotund gentleman at the top of this sorry organisation needs to move on, as a first step to recovery.

The loss of multiple long haul destinations and airlines is taking it's toll on Manchester airport and there doesn't seem to be any let up in the relentless fall in passenger numbers. Manchester airport will find it hard to maintain services from there as neighboring airports get increasingly more competitive. The growing desire of passengers to fly from local airports along with congestion on motorways will only make the matter worse for the airport. Over the next few years it is likely that Manchester airport will join a growing number of airports with virtually no links to Heathrow. This is likely to make another huge dent in the airports passenger numbers.

Yet again another bad month for Manchester airport but the decline is showing signs of levelling off.

Another poor month for the airport. I couldn't help but notice how quiet the airport was when I visited last week to see the Emirates A380.

What was the all time hight for Manchester Airport, was it 22m?

Thanks TheLocalYokel, that's a huge reduction, so basically 5m passengers less now than in 2006. That's like the entire number of passengers that use BRS airport.

That's like the entire number of passengers that use BRS airport.

MAN has lost 4.5 million passengers per annum since 2006, which is a fall of about 20%.

In percentage terms some other airports have lost considerably more in the past two years but of course they are much smaller than MAN and the actual numbers of passengers far less.

Incidentally, I think you might have given the management at BRS some raised blood pressure :shok: - they are trying to get back to 6 million this year.

Passengers up 1.8 percent at Manchester Airport

A rise in long-haul passengers has helped Manchester Airport return to growth in passenger numbers for the first time in two-and-a-half years, MEN reports. Strong demand for routes to the Middle East, Singapore and the United States meant the airport had a total of 1.632m passengers last month, up by 29,000 or 1.81 percent on October 2009, the first monthly increase since May 2008.

Scheduled international services saw the biggest increase, with 945,316 passengers against 861,396 in October last year, up by 9.74 percent. The number of scheduled international flights rose by 3.1 percent to 7,519. The number of charter passengers slipped 7.8 percent to 475,000 and domestic routes carried 211,857 travellers, down 6.54 percent.

Among the biggest winners were Emirates, which broke its record for the most passengers on a flight out of Manchester when it carried 500 people on its service to Dubai, followed two days later by a full complement of 517. Passenger numbers were also boosted by Singapore Airlines following its move from five flights a week to seven in September, and Etihad Airways’ capacity increase on services to Abu Dhabi.

Overall passenger numbers for the financial year since March are down 4.96 percent at 12.125m, compared with a fall of more than 10 percent in the previous 12 months.

Manchester Airport passengers up 1.94%

Passenger numbers grew for the second month in a row in November at Manchester Airport amid strong demand for winter sun getaway trips and European city breaks. The airport also benefited from strong performances on long-haul routes, as a total of 1.146m passengers passed through the airport in November, up 1.94 percent from 1.124m in the same month last year. This followed October's growth of 1.81 percent to 1.632m.

Scheduled international services carried 732,178 passengers, an increase of 6.63 percent. All other categories – domestic, charter and private – saw a fall in November. The number of aircraft movements increased by 1.7 percent to 11,914.

Andrew Harrison, managing director of Manchester Airport, said: ‘I'm pleased to see that the upturn is continuing into November after a strong October. We've seen good performance on some of our European routes to cities such as Amsterdam, as well as to destinations including Palma, Majorca, as passengers seek some sun. Our long-haul routes also continue to perform strongly.’

January 2011

CAA provisional stats show that Manchester handled 1,079,431 passengers in the month, up 6.3% on a year ago. Atms were up 9.9%.

Rolling 12-month total is 17,727,243, down 4% on a year ago.

As with all UK airports it has to be remembered that January 2010 was severely affected by bad weather so the comparision will not be quite like for like, given January 2011 was much less affected.

Looks as though MAN is embarking on the climb back to the 22.1 mppa it saw in 2006.

Encouraging figures for the airport. After such a long time with downwards trends over the last couple of years it seems the airport is finally gaining some momentum.

Manchester Airport passengers down 3.6%

Turmoil in North Africa and the later Easter break saw passenger numbers at Manchester Airport fall my 3.62% in March to 1.2 million. The drop comes after five consecutive months of growth and mean the airport had 17.73 million passengers during the financial year to March 31, down nearly 3% on the 18.26 million handled in the previous 12 months.

The number of people travelling on charter services dropped by 13%, reflecting the late Easter this year and the loss of some services to Egypt and Tunisia because of civil unrest in those countries affecting passenger demand. Passenger numbers on international scheduled services grew 1.27% but domestic flights saw 7.85% fewer passengers.

Andrew Harrison, the managing director of Manchester Airport, said airlines serving destinations in the Gulf region continued to perform strongly last month, adding: ‘Forward bookings for spring and into summer are promising, with traditional sunny destinations in Spain proving popular.’

Rolling year pasenger figures stand at 18,420,101 up 4.1% year on year.

Regional monthly figures for July 2011 compared with July 2010

MAN - 2,119,487 + 5.6% up
LPL - 550,652 - 5.9% up
NCL - 515,098 - 0.6% down
EMA - 512,121 + 3.7% up
LBA - 361,307 + 3.8% up
DSA - 103,152 - 9.1% down
BLK - 37,632 - 1.5% down
HUY - 29,340 - 6.3% down
DTV - 16,794 - 31.6% down

Manchester performed well and in fact Manchester airport was the best performing airport in the North of England. There are signs of some consolidation in the regions with airlines concentrating on their main bases. Notably MAN, LPL EMA and LBA.
